Had it happened with me, I would have politely asked the old guy to look out for his loving granddaughter. That he looked like a good grandad and would usually care well.

That's the Korean way to do it - instruct and tell off through compliments.

On the Busan thing, I know the guy involved, and he takes a lot of the responsibility for it (not the wife, who was only involved to call the police). He is an argumentative man, and pushed himself and his views on another in a situation that did not require it. Not saying he brought on the subsequent racism, but he certainly wasn't as victimised as all the social media guff that followed the incident claimed. If you wanted to actually use an example of a foreigner being attacked without provocation, then the recent Busan nightclub beating of an Asian (non-Korean) woman would have been better. Sadly, it isn't as publicised as the victim didn't shit her troubles all over Facebook.

Going back to this. They same guy where it was in the parking garage of a Lotte Mart right?

Because I remember his post saying it was his wife who screamed at the kid running after almost getting hit by the car and the husband simply standing while the ajeossi screamed at them both and trying to take the cell phone from her? Was that a bit of a stretch on his part? >_>

Think it was a Costco, but as far as I remember: The wife did scream as she thought the car was too close to a kid, and the old guy (kid's grandad) said it was fine and to mind your own business.

Then the FB guy said something and it all kicked off - he's South American (IIRC) and the old Korean dude took offence and said some racist shit. So he said some shit back. They fought.

Should have all stopped when the old guy said it was fine, but it seems (by his own admission) that the FB dude felt he needed to say something else. He is a bit opinionated and I can imagine him not being able to not say something. I can also imagine his wife greatly exaggerating the danger the kid was in. Spoke with him about it as he is a friend of a friend (having lived in Busan for so long this tends to happen^^), but I was drunk so some stuff may be misremembered.

Anyway, it should never have come to racism and violence - that's all on the old Korean dude. That generation here really needs some educating.

Hagwons are definitely the worst.

Haven't worked in one since 2009, but it still annoys me to this day^^

I had a hagwon owner come up to me after I was leaving my school one day and asked me to teach at her school in perfect English. Never spoke to this woman in my life.

I said "You do realize that's against the law for me to do that right?" She had the most confused look on her face. I am 99% sure she had memorized the questions to ask fluently but that was the extent of her English.

Yep. Sounds familiar. Rules and laws are meaningless to most hagwon owners^^

Most news is in Korean. The main reason foreigners don't see it is that they're mostly stuck in the foreigner bubble.

Anyway, that first story isn't accurate - the foreigner started berating the old man for not watching his kids (on only his own judgement) and it descended into a fight as the Korean dude thought he was being disrespected so started getting all racist.

Korea has a lot of shit going on, but no more or less hidden than the US (or UK) in my experience.

I'm pretty far removed from the foreigners anymore/more with the Korean nationals and even they have a hard time talking about stuff. I talked with one of my older co-workers and she basically said Korean's are embarrassed to talk about this stuff even amongst themselves. Just a sweep-it-under-the-rug policy.

And the foreigner didn't criticize the grandpa/old man, it was the wife. That was the catalyst. And even then, the Busan Chief had to admit that his force doesn't know jack on how to interact with foreigners. They were supposed to start up a training program but don't know how far they go.

But I'm not saying there is so unbalanced of shittyness with Korea and other countries. Like I said I'd point out the hypocrisy of my own country too. I've just been here so long and been more in tune/involved with the culture. And really hard to see the things happening to the innocents.

Victims of partner abuse
Teenage suicides
Soldier suicides/murders from the bullying culture
Fucking Sewol

While it is always horrible to see innocents suffer, I still don't think it happens more here than anywhere else. Look at mass shootings or terrorist attacks - we may not have the same competitive (and thus bullying) culture, but innocents are always getting hurt.

Sadly, it isn't as publicised as the victim didn't shit her troubles all over Facebook.

The Busan police did do some training events - one of them, they invited that same guy and held meetings together to ask how they can help more with immigrants and such. The guy (again) posted all this on social media and was magnanimous with his praise - didn't go as viral as the original incident, though. The police have done something, at least.

As far as Koreans sweeping things under the rug, I do agree, but feel it's more their personal vanities rather than any larger cultures of ignorance or bullying. I know many people here who are up to date with news and such like this stuff, and I know people who only care about idols or dramas. Sadly, at work I see uni students mostly caring only about the latter. Age dependent, perhaps. Most of the people I hang out with are mid-30s and they do care. At the same time, we are immigrants and have less rights - same in every country out there.

^ sounds like 1950s America

There are a lot of good things. And there are a lot of fucked up things here. The bus drivers are so overworked. Earlier this year a guy driving a tour bus obliterated a small Hyundai with three 20-something year olds. All dead on impact. His company was making him work a double back to back or something.

And in Busan (second largest city here), these middle school girls beat the ever-living shit out of a classmate because she answered one of the other girl's boyfriend's phone. I don't mean like it was them jumping the girl. I mean they took her to a dark area and beat her with wood, bottles, etc..

We have our own shit back in the States and I'm more than willing to call out my country's major issues. So I don't want it to sound like I hate my host country or anything. But man Korea try to sweep things under the rug so the foreigners don't hear about it.

Our venue is too small to recuperate the cost of getting any group worth anything over here. We can only hold about 1800 people. We'd need 4,000+ to be worth it. Plus, we'd have to catch them doing US tours but only the huge groups do. And there are no professional K-Pop promoters anywhere near our region. If we use folks from west coast, that further eats into our profits.

It's really difficult to turn a profit with gigs or events. You really need to start small and build a local fanbase of regulars first.

I used to run events in Glasgow (Scotland), although they were not Kpop they were also niche and in 2 years hardly ever made a profit. We were lucky to break even, but did it because we enjoyed it and were able to perform as well. But, anything over 2000 people is a nightmare to organise and can go very wrong money wise without a huge guarantee of success.

Sorry it didn't work out!

13 in Korea isn't really true (only applies to those of a similar age).

18 is a US thing - not a majority elsewhere. As such it's a pointless number to attach.

What was being implied by saying she is 18 anyway? Now Americans can bang her? People ITT going to get some? Weird attitude to sex you lot have.
