The bill of rights was basically written to explicitly forbid the government from doing certain things.

It was born out of an argument between the framers of the constitution. Some thought "if the constitution doesn't give government the right to regulate speech then national, state, and local governments won't have the right to regulate speech so we don't need some ten commandments style list of forbidden things to drive home that point." That was the federalist argument.

The anti-federalist argument was basically held the cynical view that if something wasn't explicitly forbidden than governments somewhere would violate the rights of people in that issue.

The bill of rights was basically written to say "ok, we fucking promise super pinky swear that these things that the government has no power to do under our constitution and you are nuts for thinking any government in the us would try to take away when our constitution is written as it is are super super important and should be protected".

And yet the anti-federalists were proven wise in this because time and again governments in the US including local, state, and federal have adopted legislation that violates the bill of rights and people today and in the past have tried to weasel their way around the constitution.

The first amendment isn't the "government protecting free speech" it is the reminder to ourselves that we should burn down city hall if they threaten free speech. Because ultimately the bill of rights is our ten commandments as a nation to remind us who we should be and to keep the government in check.

I'll present this as the difference between us and western Europe in two ways.


1. Left Wingers- Should the government be able to ban the burqa or the hijab. Should the government be able to ban a girl from attending school because she is wearing hood like a Nun because of worries over culture or religion. In countries more liberal than the US the burqa has been banned. But in the US we have drawn a line and said that any negative side of some piece of clothing or garment is far less negative than the damage it would to our soul as a nation if we ban people from wearing religious garments.

2. Right Wingers- "Hate speech". Who defines what it is? If I say that I think we should slash immigration from Mexico because the average Mexican immigrant is poorer, less educated, , and more likely to be a criminal than the average immigrant that legally let in from Africa or Asia or Europe is that hate speech? Some on this board would say yes. Some on this board would support kicking down my door and dragging me to jail because I am not politically correct.

In Europe today in other developed democracies we see people on both sides politically trying to use the government to bludgeon people that don't think or dress or speak correct thoughts. The first amendment protects us from that kind of abuse of power and disgusting examples of government oppression.

The great depression and then WW2 really formed a sold generational group because a lot of people delayed having kids during the depression and then had tons of them when the war was over. So you had the "greatest generation" as the people that had gone through all the shit of the depression and the war and the baby boomers who grew up as the children of the veterans.

But today things are a lot muddier obviously. People have children at different ages and there hasn't been some massive transformational event like the depression or WW2 to shape a whole generation.

By "millenial" generation they basically mean kids that grew up with computers and the internet. I was born in 86 and you and I TC are the very last group of people that can even remember a time before everyone had the internet and cell phones.

I feel like I lucked out on this sort of thing.

I basically grinded through all my Math, Science, and foreign language requirements in about a year and a half at community college and then I transferred to CU boulder and did my CS degree and it worked out nicely and I had a great GPA at the end of my BS (3.89).

The professors at the Community College were mostly good, the class sizes were relatively small, and the level of the students was a bit lower so the professors didn't just teach things assuming that the students were starting with a very high proficiency.

I felt bad for the kids fresh out of high school that were basically thrown to the wolves taking Calc, Physics, and programming courses at the same time while I basically got to put almost all my focus into programming with a few fun courses sprinkled in to hit 12 credits (the minimum to be a full time student).

I'm 22, I hear that's pretty old for a new recruit, but thankfully my college credits boosted helped make up for that.

When I went in I was 20 but there were guys in my platoon in basic that were 40 because they expanded the age to get in to make up for recruiting shortfalls. You will be older than most of the kids straight out of high school but there will be a decent number of people older than you and you won't seem weird except in your own mind.

Are you kidding me? I've been worrying about that for the past few weeks that I've been training my ass off thinking it would net me a low score. My recruiter told me to go for 60 when I initially got in. Goddamn it.

He is just trying to get you to the point where basic will be a breeze. You can already pass the PT test at the end of basic if you can do 50 at the start. That isn't to say you won't get a workout.

Basically there will be many times a day where you drill sergeant or whatever the navy equivalent is "Drops" the platoon and "smokes" you. That means he has you do pushups/situps/whatever else he decides you should do until you can't. The aim is to make you feel exhausted/make you stronger. If you can do 50 pushups going into basic you are already fit enough to pass basic. But he may still be there yelling at you to do more and more and more. They want to push you to your limit whether your limit is 20 pushups or 50.

But ultimately when all is said and done 50 pushups is more than enough to get through basic for any branch of the military.

Cool. I'm an immigrant, so I'm only allowed certain jobs for a year until I get my citizenship, but honestly I'm happy doing anything. That's great you could still game though, wherever I end up, I really don't want to lose the only thing in life I enjoy.

Don't worry about it. In basic training you just have to accept that your life is basic training. In the advanced training it gets a lot less strict but you may still have whatever the Navy equivalent of drill instructors messing with you a bit but you will start to have a decent amount of free time and freedom to have your own stuff again. By the time you have been in a few months and you are done with training you have a lot of freedom and can spend your off time gaming if that is your preference.

Just know while you are in Basic/boot that it is just a tiny blip in the total time you will be in and don't give up.

I was in the army for four years.

Basic training/boot camp is not the military it is just what you have to go through to get into the military. Nobody gives a fuck what you do in your off time once you are out of basic and maybe the first month in AIT (the training after basic). If you want the top quality gaming experience buy a fancy gaming laptop and a bed desk so you can play it in your bunk with headphones on.

I've worked in too many places where "smoke breaks" basically meant that every hour or two the smokers congregated outside and spent 20 minutes chatting and smoking which basically rounded out to them spending 5 hours working in an 8 hour shift.

In Colorado we have a law like this but you can't be fined if it is on your own driveway. If you are in an apartment complex or on the street then they can fine you. Also if you have a remote start (no keys in the car) then you can leave it puffing anywhere.

I've got a piercing going through my brain.

I don't recommend it though. I was trying to impress some friends in the body mod community and it had all turned into a game of one upmanship. I showed up to the big convention with the head piercing thinking I was super cool but according to my buddies and some video evidence they showed me later I was just drooling everywhere and I pissed myself during one of the many seizures I had that day.

Eventually my brain rerouted around the damaged area but for a while I was basically disabled.

I thought something similiar when I played that Xbox 360 "Wolverine" game. Wolverine took gross damage from bullets and stabbing etc. but it healed back because he is fucking wolverine.

But then you realize "every call of duty guy does the same thing without wolverine powers........". In most FPS when you get riddled with bullets you just need to hide behind a rock for a few seconds and you regenerate just like Wolverine.

The patch basically also took out 2/3 of the sudoku puzzles and expanded the easiest third to be ALL of the puzzles in the game.

A big issue was that they seemed to have just thrown random sudoku puzzles into the game and some of that shit is designed around people that spend years doing it as a hobby. You can't do that. You can't have some random trivial puzzle in a game be some 1 hour horrifying puzzle with a massive board that has a single unique solution and a million possibile failures designed to challenge those dudes that have solved literally a thousand puzzles and have a mindset built for solving sudoku.

The smaller boards that were left in the game are fine.

I don't think that the US will ever gain the political consensus needed for real gun control and even if that happened I think the genie is already out of the bottle. There are literally hundreds of millions of guns out there at this point and billions of bullets and nearly all of them are totally off the books.

I'm imagining a guy in his early thirties that lives in an apartment and is now driving a nice new car. that 25k new car could have been a down payment on a house. But instead he is basically locking himself in to a life as a renter where at age 45 he doesnt have any wealth accumulated because it has gone to rent and car payments.

It is short sighted. A car that costs less than half of the price of a new mustang could get you from a to b just as easily and it would still be respectable if not flashy.

In terms of small arms the civilian market is a far larger market than the military is. The US has 300 million privately owned firearms and the military probably has about 10 million.
