I'm not really a huge proponent of the theory so I may have been conflating some things. the Doom seems to refer to something else, and more recent, so it's probably unrelated. the nuclear fallout would've happened long before that, during the 'long night', which would have given more time for technological advances to be lost over time.

I'm quite curious what the Doom is. From the books I was under the impression at one point that there was some sort of flood, but I don't really remember why anymore.

It's purposefully ambiguous. All we know for sure is that it happened fast, a Targaryen had visions of it happening in the future, and that is tore apart the peninsula and left it as an archipelago.

we actually "know" almost nothing about the history of westeros. reports are muddled and often contradictory.

It happened a little less than 200 years before the books are set. There are multiple medieval-level Westerosi castles mentioned as being older than that, and several Valyrian Steel swords way older than that.

I guess it's not impossible for technology to degrade that quickly, but it seems kind of unlikely? But I know GRR Martin is bad with the specifics of logical things, so that's not much of an argument from me, I admit. I'm just saying that a massive technological breakdown and forgetting of history after a nuclear explosion is more plausible over a longer period of time, and you'd have to explain why Westeros' older buildings and castles still seem primitive. And if Valyria was just way more advanced than Westeros, then you'd have to explain how Dorne held out.

But we know Westeros had medieval level technology before Valyria was destroyed only a few hundred years ago, and that Dorne resisted the Targaryens' attack. I can see the Targaryens not having access to fancy things like nukes, but if they had normal modern weapons they would be almost unable to lose.

full disclosure I'm a bit biased as someone who thinks we have never needed this movie and thought it was a dumb idea from basically the moment it was announced.

trailer looks like they are trying way too hard and it's going to be very bad as a result.
