It's one of those goofy movies that I kind of liked as a teen while thinking "this could have been a lot better"

Haven't rewatched it in years. I've also started to notice Alan Moore really likes taking the works of other people and going "you know what would be cool, if all these characters met up"

I'll admit that's what appealed to me too. Mcu and avengers didn't even exist back then, not even the thought of such a concept taking off

Anyway I don't see what's so bad about s2, I'm liking this season so far and find the spirit stuff interesting for lore and world building. More so than the 1930s city setting of season 1 which I just couldn't get behind.

Although what the hell at library owl helping the evil uncle. If he hates humans, that guy's easily one of the worst humans. Unless he was promised that releasing vaatu would ensure all humans die and the owl was glad to hear that. Still haven't heard unalaq's motivation yet. If vaatu is released he won't even have a world to rule wtf.

Korra did do something to get in touch with the spiritual world. She learned there was no way to restore her powers, leaving the world without an Avatar. She ventures out alone, rejecting any offers of company. She goes close enough to a cliff edge that her tears fall into the ocean when she cries. It's not overt because it's Nickelodeon, but it's pretty heavily implied she was going to kill herself to transition to the next Avatar.
Damn. I don't know if I like that interpretation, suicide stuff always makes me uncomfortable. And even pragmatically, there was no way of knowing that the Avatar cycle would continue with her death if the bending connection was severed.

Overall a pretty dark beginning to the series.

On episode 5. What the hell. Korra actually let her dad stand trial and go jail. Even after learning that her uncle is a liar, she hasn't learned anything. She's still just incredibly rash and hot headed all the time.

Question. Korra's dad is the chief of the southern water tribe? And her uncle is the chief of the North? In the first episode of season 1, they kind of gave the impression that Korra came from hillbillyish parents, the equivalent of a family out in the boonies. For her to be this well connected kind of surprised me. I thought they were going for a theme of "the Avatar can come from anywhere" not just the daughter of a chieftain.

Can't believe that her dad's brother is this evil dude who framed his own brother and is trying to seize control. Like, why.

I feel like there's more to this whole spirit thing. At first I was suspecting that it was a trick by the dude to get Korra on his side, and I'm gonna see how it plays out.

I hope not, this better not be the high point of the show, because gorgeous animation and interesting fight scenes aside, the show could use some work. Maybe if season 1 was longer they could have fleshed some things out? Then again I wouldn't want it to be padded either, with more pro bending episodes (although I don't mind pro bending, I found it an interesting way to show how bending would make their world different from ours, and yet almost exactly the same)

Characters I was surprised by: Asami. It turns out Stato was the villain and she was just an innocent girl caught up in it. When they first showed Asami I don't know why I thought she was going to be a villain. Just felt the perpetual sexy eye makeup was weird and typically associated with female villains, so I guess it was a bait and switch.

If she wasn't a villain then her role just seemed to be an extra love interest to the love triangle that was already going on which again, I wasn't too keen on.

I was already having a hard time accepting the reveal of Amon's father was a bloodbender thing who somehow escaped prison (under the watchful eye of both Aang AND Toph?) and changed his face and met a woman and was normal up until discovering his kids could waterbend.

They never give any explanation to how Amon uses bloodbending to take someone's power away. I guess maybe something to do with chi blocking? And since Korra didn't have airbending chi yet, there was nothing to take away?

Bigger copout I felt was how Aang just comes back and restores her power and now she can go into avatar state. Felt like they wanted to quickly wrap up this story.

Kind of a sad story really. Tarrlock in particular surprised me. He was an ass and then outright psychotic, but he did something surprising. After Amon/Noatak failed at his anti-bending revolution (I mean, isn't it hereditary so what, he was gonna keep taking people's powers away until he dies?) Amon/Noatak escapes on a boat and gets Tarrlock to come with him. Tarlock... actually explodes the boat to put an end to that madness. That was... wow. And Noatak knew what he was doing too, and he just let him. That just struck me as really sad. All of this could have been avoided.

I still liked most of it. The animation is beautiful of course and I do like a lot of the characters. Although them being teens adds a Bit too much teen romance shenanigans.

I felt it was kind of a downer and the happy ending of Korra wasn't earned. I thought that they were going to do a lesson about how she needs to get in touch with the spiritual side of the Avatar and that's how she restores her powers. Like she learns to be patient and more in tune with harmony or whatever (since her biggest flaw has been her impetuous personality and rashness) and then she finally awakens the Avatar state and gets in touch with Aang/the rest and gets her powers back. Instead she sulks after Mako says he loves her, cries, and only after getting her powers back she says she loves him too? I felt it sent a mixed message. Aren't you more than your powers? I dunno.

We'll see what next season brings.

And here's the most epic reveal of all... Amon is tarrlock's brother!

What the hell man. So I'm to believe that this yakone dude was able to escape custody, with no bending (something not even the fire Lord could do) and change his face, then this evil man got a woman to fall in love with him, had children, and was normal until he discovered his kids were benders? And somehow never revealed to his wife what an evil man he was? Or one of those cases of the wife knows but pretends not to/ignores it.

Even if I accept that, it's hard to believe that he was able to get away from under the nose of both Toph and the Avatar?

The circumstances are too unbelievable but it's close to the end of the season so I'll see how they resolve this.

During Aang's time, there was this evil mob boss called Yakkone, and he was a blood bender who could do it at will. Korra kept getting visions of him. I thought they were implying that this is how the Avatar is killed or how team avatar is defeated, but no. Aang goes into the Avatar state And takes away Yakone's bending.

Here's the kicker. That prissy tarrlock is actually Yakone's son! And he trapped Korra! Dude is insane, what exactly what his end game here.

The pro bending tournament of episode 5: I legit both awwwwd at poor bolin catching Korra and mako kissing. That got to me hard with the flowers and the shock on his face and the crying. I kind of hated Korra and Mako in that moment.

The city seems to like pro bending. Besides the bending gangs we saw in episode 1, was there any other reason to hate benders? Do they have better jobs than non benders? Seems both groups fall on hardship and good fortune same as anyone else.

Is tenzin's council entirely made of benders though? That does seem like a problem. There should be representation for all groups of people.

Damn coward showing up with his posse. At first I thought his bending removal trick was a hoax, because why not just strip the Avatar of her bending right here and now? He gave his typical villain reason for it, but I suspect he can't take away an avatar's bending!

But I had no idea... this was the conflict of season 1 Korra! This Amon guy, he can take people's bending away! Holy crap it's clearly a trick right, it has to be. Only the Avatar has that power. I doubt the spirits talked to Amon, we haven't seen any yet.

Ok so I get Korra, she's pretty strong willed and hard headed, and she's great at mastering 3 of the elements. But weirdly it seems air, not fire, is the element she's having trouble with. Is air the strongest of the elements? You can fly with that, it pretty much unlocks a world of potential.

Pro bending is basically like boxing huh. In this advanced city setting, tenzin's ancient ways and the white lotus are seen as pretty obsolete.

One of tenzin's kids... that's the kid I was looking for! Someone had a gif of a kid saying be the leaf in his sig and for years I wondered what that's from. Then I watched the entirety of avatar waiting for that scene but it never showed up. Turns out the kid is from Korra. Just a small pointless anecdote.

It's weird, sometimes the animation tries to look slapstick like the original show did but it kinda falls flat when you do it with adults as opposed to the kids of the previous show. Some of it is funny but some of it misses the mark.

Not a big deal though because as expected, the show looks gorgeous. I wasn't prepared for such a rapid technological upgrade from avatar but it does look nice. Metalbender police is a cool idea.

This time, the show seems like a lot more politics.

The Avatar comics got me super excited for the sequel, so I just had to watch it.

From the get go they show an old Katara! It feels almost bittersweet, revisiting the characters I loved and seeing them all either old or passed away.

But it's time for new blood. Korra is... I guess ok so far. I notice that this time the characters are older than they were in the previous show. Korra must be 17 or 18, compared to team avatar's 13-15 age range.

New republic city makes me wonder... in a world of bending, would humanity really develop civilization in the same way, with cars and skyscrapers and that whole 1920s America aesthetic?

Anyway right off the bat they're covering the bender vs non bender conflict, an issue that the last avatar comic was about. I guess in a world where there's no longer the 4 nations separation, the next conflict would be... people of powers vs no powers? How come it wasn't like that before then...

You know, 1% of 5 billion is still 50 million. That's a lot. That's more than most animal species. The human population would bounce back like that due to how quickly we breed and proliferate.

That movie kind of overblew the whole issue. I mean it's not like a planet of the apes situation where meanwhile, monkeys were getting smarter. Humans were still the dominant species. It was simply a matter of us breeding again. No different than the plague or any other outbreak in human history.
