| Airship_Canon 09/17/17 7:33:52 PM #31 | Let's say this: Global Thermonuclear war breaks out. The US unleashes its full arsenal on the east, they unleash their full arsenals on the west. Every major population center would be wiped out. The first major question: Are we accounting for Salted Bombs [AKA Neutron or Boosted Radiation Weapons] such as Russia's 100mt Nuclear "Tsunami Bomb"? [Doomsday Devices] The next question is Altitude of Detonation? Is the attack going for destruction and maximizing the kill box, bunker busting, or intentionally causing fallout to ensure a strategic victory of sorts? On the best case scenario [No Salted Bombs/Doomsday Devices, Bombs were detonated at altitudes designed to maximize immediate lethal effects]- all traces of advanced civilization are wiped from the planet within about 30 minutes on a global scale. There's plenty of survivors, and there isn't a huge need for Fallout-esque Vaults. But society as we know it, is no more. Radiation isn't a huge threat. "Gaia's wrath" is. Nuclear weapons do not produce notable amounts of radioactive fallout if the actual nuclear fireball does not touch the ground [there's more radioactivity produced from a Volcanic Eruption than from a "Tactical Altitude Detonation [5-10 psi overpressure maximization]" of a Nuclear weapon]. Ye olde early CW era Nukes were mostly contact fused [despite Hiroshima and Nagasaki both being air-detonated-- their fireballs did hit surface, but barely, and while there was fallout, not much], scarily enough, and that's why there's a lot of mention of Fallout from them. The initial effects are brutal- millions to billions dead, cities leveled, firestorms raging across the globe. Then we get nuclear winter-- the raw amount of smoke and ash from all these cities getting leveled is similar to a supervolcanic eruption. Some instantaneous Global Climate Change right here and now. The haze blocks sunlight, and global temperatures drop a few degrees celsius, behold a year or two without summer until the ash settles. All of this makes survival very hard-- survivors of the initial annihilation will starve and die in the wake of the the destruction. Then basically, humanity will rise from the ash basically having been blasted back to the stone age. After the initial chaos following this situation, people start reforming social structure, tribalism and darwinism reign. Basically Dark Fucking Ages. Eventually after a very long time, you start forming a whole new world. 20 years out after the devastation, people are starting to get back on their feet. Expect tribalism. At best, you get early AD Europe. At the worst of that you get Mad Max. On the otherhand, if we get the other scenario, Copious Doomsday Devices, Ground Impact Detonations, Bunker Busts, and other things, you can expect a blanket of lethal radiation the world over. This would be a mass extinction event. The above scenario would still happen, but the lingering effects would be MUCH worse. There'd be more human-signature structural survival because bomb effects aren't as widespread, but effects on life are going to be much worse. A large amount of species would go extinct from combination fallout and climate change, and any human survivors are going to have a harder time not ingesting radioactive C-16 and the like-- and that's what'll kill you, same with a majority of foraging animals, and anything that feeds on said foraging animals. It won't be pretty, and the road to recovery will be much longer than the first scenario, if at all. 20 years out? The radioactive ashfalls have stopped, and shit's finally starting to go inert. People are few and far between if at all. The land itself is dead, but basic nature is starting to reclaim. --- |

Made Light the whiny angsty teen he should be and not some kind of Savant. The plotholes involving some of the issues with how the DN worked are plotholes in both. The original didn't do it any better. And L as a black guy is great. GitS was a bit iffy in some areas, but NOT ScarJo. She did Mikoto very well, and unless you're either a) someone who hates ScarJo in EVERYTHING (which is fine, since that's just not liking ScarJo) or b) a fucking moron who lacks brain development and complain about worthless concepts like "whitewashing", she's a non-issue. The only noteworthy issue in GitS was some of the presentation and pacing. --- |
