Looks amazing. I only really have 3 food goals when I go to Japan in a couple years:

1 - Eat at chef Morokitchis Omurice restaurant
2 - Eat at an expensive sushi restaurant (even though I'm not a huge fan of fish, this would cement whether or not something could change my mind)
3 - Eat proper Ramen/Udon/etc

1 - I tried. I didn't reserve though so it was expected I didn't get in there.
2 - I did this with fugu pretty much. Did have conveyor sushi too though. Fugu is chewy as hell.
3 - Had a great bowl of ramen. Best Ramen I ever had bar none.

I actually like this song too. When I first heard of the crossover I thought it'd be terrible but it's pretty great.

I thought so too. But it's interesting. Within Temptation's style crossed with a pretty deep-sounding rap. It didn't go too bizarre with it at all. Been a Within Temptation fan for ages now. It's wild how this song became one of my favorites so fast.

.... OHHH, and The Whole World is Watching is great too. WT is my favorite English-singing band by a long shot. I probably know more of their music than any other band.

What would you say is your favorite song?

That's a tough call. Probably "Gekiai Merry-Go-Round" by Psycho Le Cemu or "Coyote Colored Darkness" by GLAY. "Vamos A La Discoteca" by Paradisio is a massive earworm for me too.

Sticking more localish, "And We Run" by Within Temptation + Xzibit is really great. The Matt Copley version of "Defying Gravity" also ear worms me.

I mean, with all the music in the world, it's rough. Especially for someone like me who listens to everything.

Oops lol..

Does your brother know any Japanese? How horrible would it be to visit for someone who knows no Japanese?

He can read some katakana and that's about it. Katakana is very easy for English speakers to read once they learn, since that character set is used for foreign words. Example:

Hiragana - (Ne-zu-mi) - Means mouse
Katakana - (Ma-u-su) - Means mouse

Hiragana - - (I-nu) - Means Dog
Katakana - (Do-ggu) - Means Dog

They recommend learning Hiragana first but Katakana is where people start feeling like they can read Japanese.

I think if you stay in the big areas like Tokyo's neighborhoods and Osaka and such, it's very doable. These cities are made for visitors practically.

That looks really amazing! Id like to try ramen that fancy someday.

Do you know a lot of Japanese? And if not, how was traveling without knowing a ton of the language?

Yeah, I wanna go back. It was so good. I wanted to try ramen at another place but never got around to going to the other place too. Maybe next time. It was in the area where Yakuza takes place and my brother felt a bit nervous in that area.

I know enough to help in some areas. The country really seems to be welcoming to foreigners as they use a lot of the english alphabet and have a lot of english signs here and there. I can definitely read some kanji and all of the hiragana and katakana.

There was one time my brother and I went to a 7-11, he bought a couple of drinks, then we went into a Lawson and my brother realized he didn't put the bottles in his backpack. So when we went to the clerk, I said something like "kare wa sebben-ereben de kaimono wo kaimashita" (He, at 7-11, items, bought) or something like that, which was enough to get her to understand what I was saying. I don't think I did 'kaimono wo' (items) and think I left that part out though. (He at 7-11, bought)

Also, fun story. My brother and I going back to the hotel one night, got on a train. We were only going one stop and after we got on, I noticed how pink the interior of this train car was. I looked at the window and say 'Women's only car'. My brother, clearly looking like a guy, I whispered to him "Uhhh.... we are in a women's only car....."

As for the ramen, I dunno how to explain it. I actually made a food topic from my Japan trip. Posted a picture there. Here since it won't let me hyperlink.

McDonalds really needs Japan's marketing team. Especially with supposedly the higher interest of anime lately in younger gens. Had a chocolate caramel-lava pastry at McDonalds in Japan last year and it was definitely better than anything I've ever had here.

I love night life so for the little time I was there, I did love Dotonburi. I really wish I had maybe another two days there. Alas.

I had a really cool event happen here though. When I was at an arcade, this couple, probably like a couple of 24 year olds, came up to me and gave me some little mini plush thing they won like 10 of. I have it over my bed now. It was sweet of them. :)

Went to Japan with my brother back in October. Most plates mine. The others being my brother's. Two themed restaurants involved. A few places recommended by others IRL and online. Others of my own interest. Others of my brother's own interest. Lots of food aimed to try that are not really known for being popular here.... or lessly popular. The list is:

  • Dragon Quest Themed Dishes (From Luida's Bar in Akihabara. Orange Creme Brulee, Curry Rice, Custard Bun, Drinks (Elixirs.... the yellow one which I ordered, was probably the best yuzu drink I have ever tasted. And not alcoholic!), Icecream Mochi and Brownie, Omurice, Sweet Potato Soup, and Hamburg Steak.
  • Fugu Sushi (From Guenpin in Shibuya. As Fugu isn't available in the US, I wanted to try it (and will say it was..... a tough eat. As in very chewy .... ) There was also grilled fugu I didn't get pictures of, and lemonades with fugu collagen jelly in there as well.
  • Takoyaki and Kakigori (From Konamon Bar Rikyu in Osaka. Blue Hawaiian and Matcha)
  • Katsu Curry (From Coco Ichibanya. Recommended by co-workers in Japan. Level 5 Heat. Was too much for my sensitive mouth but did get it all down!)
  • Mario Themed Plates (From Universal at the Kinopio (Toad) Cafe. Yoshi Egg Pasta / Goalpost Cake / Fishbone Fish / Standard Rice / ? Block Creme Brulee)
  • Mochi-covered Omurice (From Rakeru in Shibuya. Absolutely amazing and unexpected as the mochi worked and I never had curry sauce with my omelets before.... actually inspired me to try it on my own at home. )
  • Souffle Pistachio Pancakes (From Flippers in Shibuya. As good as they looked.)
  • Tonkatsu Ramen (From Hanamaruken Namba Hozenji in Dotonburi/Osaka. Best Ramen I think I have ever had.)
  • Rice-Bun Burger and Fried Potato (From Mos Burger)
  • Strawberry and Citrus Icecream Shakes (From Flippers)
  • Taiyaki (From Taiyaki Wakaba. This place was a little walk from the Japan office which seemingly always had a built-up line of people getting handmade Taiyaki there. After splitting from the group at the office, I realized this place was close, so went here.)
  • Yakiniku (From Yakiniku Like. A fast Yakiniku place seemingly everywhere. My brother loved this)
Best (To me): Either the Ramen or the Mochi Omurice.

Worst (To me): Whatever the red slime on the steak was made of, as it was the only thing I tried and taste-rejected. As a full plate, probably the fugu for the toughness or the slime-themed omurice, as I wasn't a big fan of the ketchup-rice mix inside, especially after having the mochi/curry one. Lesson here is, gimmicks are gimmicks for a reason. Still no regrets. Missed opportunities/Food Pics:

  • We tried to get a place for Omurice in Kyoto but missed out as it was reservation only.
  • Was going to try ramen at this place in Golden Gai I heard so much about but decided against it later for a few reasons.
  • We went to this bakery in Shibuya called Shiroichi 4 times because we loved the food they had there so much. Food looked like standard bread (An pan, melon pan, etc) but the tastes were too great. (Cream was the best IMO)
  • There were also other places we ate at that we didn't get (strictly) food pictures (Sushi bar, A british pub I met a friend at, another more upscale Yakiniku place by the Skytree, Zauo, a few fast convenience store grabs like famichiki and such but were all still great!)

I know lots of people love food pics so here ya go. (Images too big, too many to post here apparently.)

Easy tie between honeydew and cantaloupe. I'd expect something called honeydew to taste better. And cantaloupe pretty much tastes the same to me.

Both are massive disappointments.
