CHICAGO (WGN) A renewed search for a couple at the center of a 50-year-old cold case has led to the discovery of nearly 100 cars that were submerged in the Chicago River.

Edward and Stephania Andrews were a married couple from Arlington Heights who disappeared on May 15, 1970.

The Chicago Tribune reports that the two were headed home in their yellow 1969 Oldsmobile after leaving a cocktail party at the Sheraton Hotel downtown, but they never made it.

The couple was reported missing the following Monday, but 55 years later, the mystery surrounding their whereabouts remains.

A renewed effort to locate them in 1994 provided investigators with few answers.

In another attempt to locate the missing couple, members of the Chaos Divers team jumped into the Chicago River last week in search of the Oldsmobile.

Chaos Divers is a sonar search and recovery dive team that is dedicated to bringing answers to families of those missing, often collaborating with law enforcement.

The team documents its efforts and shares the stories on its YouTube channel and they are not unfamiliar with Chicagoland. Earlier this year, Chaos Divers helped authorities in a search on the Fox River, eventually locating the remains of Karen Schepers, a 23-year-old woman who went missing in 1983.

It is one of more than 20 cold cases the team has provided valuable information on.

The team came to Chicagoland last week in an effort to help crack 10 local cold cases, but was focusing on Edward and Stephanias disappearance at the time they located the cars.

But their efforts to uncover answers happened to reveal another curious case.

During their search on the Chicago River, between Cicero and Diversey, Chaos Divers located nearly 100 cars sunken in the water.

Over the last two days, weve been working the Chicago River and have located over 60 vehicles beneath the water. Starting yesterday evening and continuing through today, weve begun the process of clearing them, one by one, a Chaos Divers spokesperson said in a social media post.

Crews initially located more than 60 cars, but continued returning to the site, eventually locating 97.

Chaos Divers will be back out at the scene on the Chicago River on Thursday before they focus their search on the Calumet River on Friday.

Chicago police have not offered an update on the discoveries, and it is unclear if the cars are tied to any criminal cases or disappearances.

For people just passing through, its a curiosity. But for those who live in the neighborhood, the all-day buffet for the birds is creating an all-night feast for rats, and the locals want to put a stop to the feeding frenzy.

A local leader pins the blame lies squarely on those leaving food for the birds, because that is attracting the rodents and allowing them to run amok near the corner of 96th Street and Broadway, where the 1/2/3 trains run.

"When you feed the pigeons, youre going to bring the rats because they like the same grain. The same seeds," said Councilmember Gale Brewer, who represents the Upper West Side.

Brewer said the pigeon problem begins each day in the morning. That's when animal lovers, some of whom have been seen on video, feed the birds. But every evening, there are leftovers -- and the result is a feast for rats.

The rats are behind you, they just come out and if there is food by your foot they go right by your foot. They arent even scared of humans," said Deborah Kelly.

Another local resident, Susan Lawrence, said she has had a rat come right across her foot as it was going for the leftover food.

Brewer said she has pleaded with the Mayor Eric Adams administration, writing a letter asking for measures to prevent the feeding of pigeons. However, the city's Health Department responded by saying that its not illegal to feed pigeons or other wildlife.

"I was a little surprised there was nothing that could be done to stop people from feeding them," said Brewer.

Though some New Yorkers don't mind sharing the space with pigeons, others say it reminds them too much of of an Alfred Hitchcock movie. And the rats? Theyre for the birds.

"I think they are flying rats and they should do something about it," said Sheila Mitchell, who lives on the Upper West Side.

Earlier in August, Mayor Adams touted several months straight of decreasing rat sightings based on 311 complaints. A lot of the neighbors in the area would like to see a more intense presence of Health and Parks Department staff to dissuade people feeding birds.

Yes please. Smaller companies have opted for full physical carts so I feel like there really isn't any excuse for the big ones to just do key cards and codes in boxes. Especially if they're seeing large attach rates for Switch 2.

If Playtonic Games and Inti Create can do full physical cards there is zero excuses for any company that uses GKC.

FORT MONTGOMERY, N.Y. -- An Army football player and his father pulled a man from a crashed car just before it burst into flames near the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, earning praise from the institution for "heroic" and "selfless" actions.

Video of the daring rescue early Sunday showed sophomore safety Larry Pickett Jr. and his father, Larry Pickett Sr., grabbing the man out of the driver's seat and carrying him away from the vehicle.

At one point, a woman could be heard screaming: "Larry! Come on! Come on! Get him out!"

The car, a white sedan, had smashed into a utility pole on Route 9W in Fort Montgomery, New York, about 3.8 miles (6.1 kilometers) from West Point, authorities said. Video of the rescue, recorded by Pickett Jr.'s sister, Lauren, showed sparking wires surrounding the vehicle.

The Picketts, in town for Pickett Jr.'s first football game of the season, came upon the crash while driving back to campus after a family dinner in New York City's Times Square. They stayed with the man until police and firefighters arrived.

"Just after Midnight, I watched in awe as my son, Larry Pickett Jr., ran toward a burning vehicle, ignoring the downed power lines crackling around it," Pickett Sr. wrote in a Facebook post accompanying his daughter's video. "With immense courage, he pulled a man to safety, saving him from a fiery fate."

Pickett Sr. told WTVD-TV in their hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina, that his son "mentioned his military training kicked in" and "jumped right into action."

"Honestly it wasn't too much thinking that went in to it," Pickett Jr. said in an interview with ABC News. "We just, like I said, we saw that there's a car that crashed, somebody who needed our help and without thinking we just reacted and went and helped as best as we could."

PROSPERITY, S.C. A large python is no longer on the loose in Newberry County after a group of people stepped in to capture the massive reptile.

Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster said on social media that Warren Gallman and several friends were able to safely capture the snake after spotting it slithering near the campus of Mid-Carolina High School, which is near the town of Prosperity.

While it's not clear just how long it was, photos from the scene showed showed three people holding it.

"It is believed this was someones pet and it was released because this type of snake is not native here," Foster said.

Foster said the snake appears to be an albino python. The sheriff praised Gallman and the others for their quick action.

Theyre brave people and great Americans, Foster said.

In Florida, pythons have become an invasive species, and there are even bounties for capturing them. While South Carolina doesnt currently have the same problem, wildlife officials warn that releasing exotic pets can pose serious risks to both people and native wildlife.

Authorities have not said what will now happen to the python.
