I was watching a video on the history of RPGs and learned a lot about the Ultima series. Previously, I didn't really know much about these game besides how Spoony from the Spoony Expirement loved these games and was severely disappointed by how the series ended.

It made me realize how foundational these games are to the RPG series (especially, 4,5,6, and 7). It seems like it should be recognized as a foundational series just as Super Mario Bros. is to platformers or Doom is to FPS games.

4 seems like one of the most unique and ambitious games I've ever heard of, especially for a game from 1985. Its an open world RPG that doesn't have some great evil to defeat. Instead the goal is to become a paragon of virtue through the actions you take in the game. Most RPGs with moral choices seem very shallow to how they work in this game.

Its kind of shocking how you rarely hear about this series in any "greatest of all time lists".

I think the biggest issue is how the series ended on a really bad note and there hasn't been a good game in the series since Ultima Online from 1997. Ultima 8 and 9 seemed to have really tainted the reputation of the series. I think if the Internet was big in 1999 Ultima 9 may have been a bigger scandal than Cyberpunk 2077's launch.

The tragic end to the series and no new games seems to have accelerated how these games have been forgotten to time.

Eclipse prediction is really old. If I recall, even Babylon had the rudimentary ability to predict eclipses.

Until recently, eclipse prediction wasn't really common knowledge. Christopher Columbus and Tecumseh are probably the 2 most famous people who used their knowledge of eclipses to persuade people of their "powers."

OW2 was only made be because Blizzard promised OW would always have no pay only skins or heroes would be free to any who bought the game. OW2 allowed them to break that promise.

Millennials and Gen X have much better computer and Internet skills than Zoomers and Boomers. (Boomers were too old when the Internet started taking off and Zoomers were born into the Internet when it essentially became "easy mode" to use).

It's always interesting how celebrities turned active politicians are almost always Republicans (see Reagan and Trump for the biggest examples).

It's almost like rich people love the Republican party.

Won't stand in court. It's a First Amendment violation.

I think it might stand. It just requires that the company that owns it doesn't have connections to the Chinese Communist Party. Its not an outright ban. The First Amendment does not necessarily apply the same to Americans and non-Americans.

Not all cliffhangers are created equally. Across the Spider-Verse's is really poorly done. The movie just ends, there is no real downward action after the climax. It would be like if ESB literally ended with No, I am your father.

I loved it. Better than Spider-Man 1 and Miles Morales imo. Boss fights were better, switching between Peter and Miles was seamless and fun, the Black Suit was great and the MJ levels were much less of a chore than in Spider-Man 1. Not sure why people were hating on the game.

I think most people that hate the game hate it because it isn't really innovative (similar to how TOTK is derivative of BOTW) OR they hate it because they are stuck in the culture wars and consider it an evil "woke" game.

There are a LOT of interesting data points here, but the one that surprised me the most is where overall revenue actually declines after the release of the 2600.

My guess is that since the 2600 was the first console that was considered really good, it unexpectedly "siphoned" some revenue off of arcades the next year because people now had a true viable alternative to arcades. Less coins were being put in arcades because people were playing games at home.

I have no proof of any of this, just my intuition.

Some people suspect it was a financial flop due to its supposedly insane budget.

Critically though, it isn't a flop. It was generally liked by most players and critics.

It is cool music but it doesn't fit the game like the original music.

1) Because the gameplay for the games are really dated (especially 2 : Innocent Sin, which is considered one of the worst gameplay systems in Megaten).

2) There is no simple way to play on modern hardware, especially in English.

Your official choices for 1 in English is either the infamous 90s PSX release (which doesn't even include the whole game), or the PSP version which butchers the music.

2 : Innocent Sin was only released on the PSP in English and 2 : Eternal Punishment was only released on the PSX in English.

In 2023, it also asked about layoffs. 35% of developers said their company had been impacted by layoffs in 2023, and 7% were laid off themselves.

It sounds like the 33% only refers to companies doing layoffs with about 7% of developers being laid off. That's still a lot, but no where near 33% of the workforce being laid off.

Just wanted to point out how insane the 80s video game crash was. Total estimated video game revenue did not return to the level of 1982 until about the year 2000.

QBs are disproportionately important in the NFL and there aren't enough good QBs for 32 teams. QBs that have a good chance of being above average make the big bucks because of this. Even those who are close to mediocrity like Cousins.
