Answering doom, but man do I love me some Descent. I know a lot of people don't like the 6DOF thing but it was a lot of fun to maneuver around, and it allowed for some really creative level design. Killer soundtrack too

Overload, the modern-day successor game built by the same devs, is also excellent and worth your time if you ever liked the Descent games

the book Snow Crash deals with this issue pretty interestingly. IIRC, there's like a central "band"/"road' that extends infinitely in both directions, and then virtual real estate branches off of it, also infinitely. But properties that are closer to the central band are more valuable

It's been a while since I read it, so may be getting the details wrong, but it was very cool

Since middle school I've built up a pretty large digital music library (I do still buy/DL all of my music), which is just over ~9000 songs now. I'm also extremely anal about the metadata (which I partially attribute to my increased interest in last.fm data tracking) and have spent many, many late nights tracking down proper the names/years of various releases, as well as album art and what not.

Lol, guessing you're referencing all the "wrapped" stuff. Well at least I track my listening via last.fm, so I do have pretty good listening stats I can look at whenever I want. But even they don't generate their annual reports until after Dec 31... So I don't have anything to share today

When you right-click anywhere in the (quite giant) header of any playlist, the very first option in the context menu is "Remove Download". This feature removes local downloads of any song in the playlist that is associated with your account. This isn't quite as bad as it sounds, since these songs can simply be re-downloaded. However, for playlists with 1000s of songs this can mean a significant chunk of time and bandwidth lost to this action.

And given the ubiquitous prevalence of "fat finger" mistakes with humans in general, it should be pretty obvious that the top of a right-click context menu -- mere pixels away from where a user just clicked -- is going to be susceptible to misclicks.
Even worse when you find out that there isn't even a Yes/No confirmation dialog; it just goes rgiht ahead with the nuke.

The icing on the cake is that any locally downloaded song removed by this method is ALSO automatically removed from every single other playlist that it exists in. So all the playlists you've painstakingly accumulated over years just got eviscerated.

In other news, I am seriously pissed off at my cat right about now...

(Before someone says "lol why are you still using Apple Music you idiot", I have my reasons... Playlist creation/management being one of them. The UI is just definitely very much NOT a reason.)

I will say that 19 year old me found the last three books by Sanderson to be a satisfying conclusion. I don't have the best recollection of the actual books, but I remember going to sleep at 6 AM on a Saturday very satisfied after having finished A Memory of Light.
Nice! Yeah, from reading general sentiment online, I get the sense that the ending was at the very least a suitable conclusion, which is heartening to see.

Tangentially, I watched the trailer for the Wheel of Time Amazon prime TV show adaptation, and I'm ... whelmed? I mean, it certainly has potential, and I can vibe with the casting for the most part, but it does come across as trite and/or trying to fill the void of GoT... I'm worried that the budget/audience won't be able to reach the proper scope of the series.

I mean, it does start out relatively quaint in the Two Rivers, and the plot is overall more character-driven than "world"-driven like, say, LoTR (I would say it's halfway between LotR and GoT in that respect) but there's some proper high fantasy epic shit going on throughout the series as well.

Even so... I do remind myself that even the production value of GoT season 1 was limited by its budget in ways that later seasons were not, so I will hold out hope that it turns out good! In the meantime I'll probably tune into the TV adaptation of one of my other favorite childhood series (Foundation) ...

When I was much younger I had read up until Jordan's last book, but when he died I was skeptical that the series would be properly finished, so I never finished it. Now I'm giving it a shot again (especially after having read Sanderson's original work), and really enjoying it. I mean, it's chock-full of common Tokien-esque fantasy tropes of the time; like, the "Dark One", orc-like bad guys (Trollocs), lethal black-robed agents of the dark (Myrdraal), simple farmer becoming a 'chosen one' type, etc etc. But it's like, Jordan has produced the best-quality version of those tropes, so I don't mind it at all.

Right now, I especially am enjoying the Forsaken characters and their role in the story. Again, very trope-y to have some elite group of evil magic-users that are the "mini bosses" of the story... But the way that they are weaved into the pattern (lol) of the story is really cool. Like for example, in book 4, how one of the Forsaken just kinda steps into the story as an unnamed woman and compels Nynaeve and Elayne to tell her everything they've been doing, and then blocks their memory.

That episode/scene is then not referenced for several chapters until a pivotal moment where Nynaeve is suddenly able to remember it again, and it's like, Holy shit, that was Modeghien! (Who up until that point, unless I'm misremembering, had not been introduced to the reader yet)

And of course, the 'reveal' at the end of the book, where Rand is able to trick Lanfear and sever Asmodean from the Dark One's influence -- again, just a really cool scene that raises the stakes of the story and makes you want to know what kind of crazy shit Rand is going to get into by learning from one of the Forsaken.

Just goes to show... You don't always need to be flouting common convention in a given genre "Game of Thrones" style in order to be compelling. With enough narrative/writing skill and a unique perspective, you can make most any type of plot device work

good to listen to on headphones tho
Oh I am by no means a festival go-er ... For most of my life I've enjoyed music primarily through headphones. I've only been to a handful of live concerts/festivals in my life, and as far as drugs, at most I've done edibles for certain shows.

However, I'm a massive Jon Hopkins fan, and several of the artists on the Second Sky lineup (including Porter Robinson, the headliner) are known for having live sets that are highly curated experiences that go beyond what you'd hear on the album. (Which was definitely the case)

FWIW, Jon Hopkins' material does indeed sound good in quality headphones -- really masterful sound design on his last two albums especially

I got drunk while watching Mulholland Drive for the first time.

Id be the typical drunk, not quite getting it, paying only partial attention, then a major scene would play out and Id be like, Okay, I dont get it, but my drunk just changed.

The ending fucked my night up. Pretty great drunk watch. Maybe my best.
Coincidentally, I watched that movie at like, 6am, hungover in bed after a night drinking. Not sure why I did that, but I was definitely in a weird mental state -- waking up with the sunrise, not quite sober and a little disoriented -- and it definitely messed me up too (in a good way).

The opera scene in particular gave me chills... "No hay banda. No hay orquesta..." Not ashamed to admit I had a really weird mix of emotions at that point in the movie, but I think that's kind of the vibe it goes for. A weird emotionally charged dreamscape
