27 hours in, halfway through the fourth realm's main dungeon, think I need to call it a night so I'm not a complete zombie at work in the morning. Marisha Ray-looking witch chick will have to wait til tomorrow.

Just made it to the fourth realm now and I am really, really digging how the party dynamic is developing.

Oh, and as far as the cast goes combat-wise, I always stick exclusively to the main character my first time through a Tales game, so I can't comment.

Nah, they mention that. They don't stress it but I definitely remember reading it myself.

Anyway, I continue to be astounded at the depths of my nerdiness. Always funny when I get into a game like this to the point that I'm disappointed when all of the random books found in the games libraries don't have several pages worth of lore text for me to soak up.

Also, the area I was just in had a Storeroom, which made me miss the block-pushing warehouse minigames from Abyss and Vesperia. By which I mean I miss the music that played while I followed a guide for the block-pushing warehouse minigames in Abyss and Vesperia, because some of those were ridiculous.

Just beat the first boss after right at four hours of playtime. Game definitely rocks. Love the battle system, love the interplay between the two leads so far, and I'm blown away by the quality of the cutscenes. Berseria's were good, but this is a massive leap forward for a series that's definitely struggled in that area for a real long time.

Haven't played Definitive Edition, but the idea of Flynn being a playable character has always really bugged me. That feels like diluting the purpose of Yuri's character arc for the sake of fanservice.
This is exactly what happens. Flynn's purpose in the story falls apart when he gets dragged into the dorky skits and victory quotes for the rest of the party, because he's no longer a shining paragon of excellence who still struggles to make real change happen by virtue of still being only one man. He's just a dude who's kind of uptight and stiff.

I will maintain until the day I die that Vesperia Definitive suffers more than anyone realizes by making Patty and Flynn party members. That game had its problems even on the 360, but those two additions exaggerated them and just made the whole thing feel less cohesive.

Anyway, on the subject of Arise modernizing the series, I definitely don't consider myself a purist that resists change in basically any media I enjoy, so I'm on board with Tales trying a fresh coat of paint, especially since it's being done in the name of trying to reach a wider audience. And, though I've only played the demo through once, everything they've done suits me just fine, with the lone exception being that I really, really dislike the new combat HUD. Maybe I'll get used to that, though.

Alright, I guess I'll participate.

Abyss > Berseria > Xillia 2 > Graces > Vesperia > Xillia > Symphonia > Hearts > Eternia > Destiny > Legendia > Phantasia > Dawn of the New World > Being kicked in the crotch repeatedly and rapidly for 40 hours >>>>>>>>>> Zestiria

And also, yeah, I've never seen anyone say Berseria is underrated. It's neck-and-neck with Symphonia for the most widely liked game in the series at this point.

I'm perpetually late to the party on most games, hardly ever play anything until at least a year after release anymore, so this is certainly the topic for me.

Just finished Super Meat Boy the other day and was very much not impressed. Don't think that game's aged well in the wake of all the great indie platformers that have come in the decade since its release.

Also in the process of finishing up Fire Emblem: Sacred Stones after starting a playthrough in early 2020 and getting sidetracked. Always an interesting series because I feel like most entries have one or two aspects that they do better than most or all other games in the series, but I don't think I can say that about SS. It's just kind of solid all around. Think it's gonna end up being pretty low on my franchise ranking unless the last few chapters just wow me somehow.

I feel like I may be talking past the rest of y'all a little bit, and that's probably my fault for misunderstanding.

I know stories are driven by characters. I know character development is an important part of stories. But the impression I get from some of these posts has been, "I like the cast, so it bumps up the score of the story for me," where I feel like it's a little fuzzier of a connection for me, especially in a series like Tales that relies on stuff like skits and extremely out-of-the-way sidequests to get to the real meat of its characters.

Like, in Symphonia, I love Raine. Great character. But a lot of Raine's intrigue for me comes from the sorts of conversations she has in skits with other party members that she otherwise doesn't engage with much or from the sidequests that delve into her backstory. Any given player might see some or all or none of that, and hardly any of it has any kind of impact on anything else that's happening in the game. Really, Symphonia is one of the worst offenders in Tales from that perspective with, like, Regal and Presea, who are plenty likable but don't really contribute anything at all beyond that.

So I don't know; we might've been having two different discussions here. FFVIII definitely should get points for Squall's development, one way or the other, because Squall's development is FFVIII's story at its core. Hell, I've spent many a word here on B8 arguing for what a wonderful game Abyss is because of how great Luke's story is. But then you've got, say, Tales of Graces, which has a fantastic cast in a lot of ways that is yet unable to save its story from being nonsensical shlock.

Again, apologies if this whole discussion was just caused by me just not understanding what exactly people meant by their praise of the characters.

Took advantage of there not being anything really interesting happening tonight wrestling-wise to watch this, so let's go.

There's three things the Toryumon system consistently does better than any other company around: nonstop action, enjoyable and harmless silliness, and legitimate moving emotion. In a multiman match like this, you're pretty much guaranteed to get both of the first two at minimum, and this match delivers there.

I have a reputation in our little circle here for being "super serious anti-fun" guy in wrestling. On one hand, it's well earned. On the other hand, I think the actual truth of the situation is that most wrestling companies just suck at doing fun. These guys don't have that problem, so even though the first fifteen minutes of this match are primarily comedy, I still had a great time with it. After all, so much of comedy is in good timing, and if there's one thing you can trust the Toryumon system to beat into every worker that ever came through it, it's good timing.

And then when the match picks up toward the end... Well, I mean, just look at the ridiculous talent in that lineup. CIMA, Susumu, Mochi, and the freshly retired Yoshino (sad face) are all-timers in every sense of the term. Genki is the best tag team "glue guy" ever, full stop. Milano and Dragon Kid are as smooth and creative as they come. Even outside those guys, there's no weak point here; they all bottom out as being very good, and they play their small roles to perfection in a match like this.

You won't see a match like this anywhere else, for the simple reason that no one else could pull it off. Which is a good thing, because I wouldn't want every match to be like this - as previously stated, I certainly love my epic struggles through sport. But did it put a smile on my face like Bidoof hoped? Heck yeah, it did. It always does.

Interesting take.
Don't know what's that interesting about it. Good music can elevate a story by making emotional beats land better, and good gameplay can elevate a story by immersing the player into the world and narrative, but I don't think anyone's going to consciously consider either one of them in a story rating.

And I understand those aren't 1-to-1 examples; characters have much more of an intrinsic connection to the story than either of those things, of course. But I view them in a similar way.

Good, but all of the most interesting things tend to happen outside of the main narrative.

It's interesting to see so many people considering characters as part of the score; I've always kind of considered a game's cast and its story to be somewhat distinct even if they obviously affect each other.

This is actually one of my favorite RPGs, but the story is one of the lesser parts of that; I find the cast, the OST, and the gameplay to be the more memorable parts of the game. That being said, it's a solid, good story that, while not particularly innovative, benefits from an interesting enough setting and lore and is executed well.
