Whether it's cigarettes or alcohol, many governments have legislated that companies must warn consumers of the negative effects of their products. This is often achieved on packaging or required in advertising. France is now intending to bring such measures to the automotive industry, forcing carmakers to supplement ads with messages about greener transport alternatives, as reported by CTV News.

Coming into force on March 1st, the legislation is the product of years of lobbying from French environmental groups. The law requires the mention of one of three statements in any given advert. Roughly translated, these are "For short journeys, walk or cycle," as well as "think about carpooling" and "Take public transport daily."

These messages must be included in all advertising, whether in print, online, or broadcast on radio or TV. The messages must be clearly visible on screen, or in the case of radio ads, be spoken aloud after the ad proper is finished. A hashtag, #SeDplacerMoinsPolluer, is also required to be displayed in certain contexts, which translates to "Move without pollution." Fines for non-compliance can range up to 50,000.

It's part of a wider push to cut down on transport emissions in France, with private cars making up a full 15 percent of the country's greenhouse gas output. The country has already pledged to end the sale of gas and diesel-powered cars by 2040, while the city of Paris has banned older, more polluting vehicles from the city center.

Speaking on the legislation, the Minister for the Ecological Transition of France, Barbara Pompili, highlighted that a multi-pronged approach was required to clean up transport. "Decarbonizing transport is not just switching to electric vehicles. It also means using, when possible, public transport or cycling," Pompili tweeted on Wednesday.

It's a change that won't directly cut carbon emissions by any means. However, it looks to serve as a way for the French government to push the message that automotive emissions are a negative thing that must be curtailed by multiple different means. Whether the push will see a change in French driving habits will remain to be seen.

Hard to believe anything that would legitimately get him a valid medical exemption wouldn't also be negatively impacting his playing career.

Elizabeth Homes, the former CEO and founder of Theranos, has been found guilty on charges of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Holmes faces up to 20 years in prison for defrauding investors in her blood testing startup. The verdict comes after a months-long trial, and more than three years after she was first charged and forced to step down as CEO in 2018.

Of the 11 total charges, Holmes was found guilty on four: conspiracy to defraud investors and three counts of wire fraud against individual investors. She was found not guilty on four additional charges, including one count of conspiracy to defraud patients, two counts of fraud against investors, and one count of wire fraud stemming from ads Theranos ran in Arizona. The jury was deadlocked on three other counts of wire fraud and returned no verdict on those charges.

During the trial, Holmes lawyers tried to portray her as a young and inexperienced entrepreneur. Elizabeth Holmes worked herself to the bone for 15 years trying to make lab testing more affordable, one of Holmes attorneys said in opening arguments. She failed but failure is not a crime.

Holmes, who testified during the trial, said she hadnt intended to mislead the public or investors, and had been advised to protect the companys trade secrets. As The New York Times pointed out, she spent much of her testimony arguing that others at Theranos were responsible for the companys shortcomings.

The prosecution alleged that Holmes knew about serious flaws in the companys technology and hid the issues from investors. Former patients who had received inaccurate blood tests also testified, including an Arizona woman who received an incorrect result for an HIV test, and a woman who was misdiagnosed with a miscarriage.

Holmes story has been a source of widespread fascination even for those outside of Silicon Valley. At its peak, Theranos was valued at more than $9 billion, and had a board of directors filled with former high-ranking government officials, including two former Secretaries of State, Henry Kissinger and George Shultz. Holmes, who had dropped out of Stanford to start the company, regularly appeared on magazine covers and was often compared to Steve Jobs and other iconic founders. (Holmes herself was reportedly infatuated with Jobs and adopted his signature black turtlenecks.)

Former Wall Street Journal reporter John Carreyrou was the first to report on issues with Theranos technology in 2015, and his coverage prompted multiple investigations and lawsuits that ultimately resulted in criminal charges for Holmes and former COO Ramesh Sunny Balwani. On the stand, Holmes testified that her romantic relationship with Balwani had been abusive. Balwanis trial is scheduled to begin in February.

There has been no shortage of pop culture depictions of Holmes. After Carreyrous best seller, Bad Blood, there was an HBO documentary and several podcasts about Theranos rise and ultimate downfall. Hulu is set to debut a new miniseries about the saga, with Amanda Seyfried starring as Holmes, in March. And Apple recently nabbed the Jennifer Lawrence-led film adaptation of Bad Blood.

Holmes, who will likely appeal the charges, could face up to 20 years in prison, though it's not yet clear when she will be sentenced. Following the verdict, the judge in the case said Holmes would be allowed to remain free on bail for the time being, though a new hearing "to discuss any change in the conditions of Holmes' liberty" could come as soon as next week, according to Mercury News reporter Ethan Baron. Prosecutors also asked for Holmes bail conditions to be changed, which would require her "to put up cash or property, rather than just her signature, to cover her $500,000 bail."

The judge also declared a mistrial on the three wire fraud charges that had left the jury deadlocked. The mistrial leaves open the possibility of a new trial, though the prosecutors haven't said whether they would pursue such an action.

MLB Network has cut ties with insider Ken Rosenthal that is believed to be the end result of acrimony that peaked in the summer of 2020 after Rosenthal criticized commissioner Rob Manfred, The Post has learned.

Rosenthal, a top news breaker, was first kept off the air for around three months, according to sources, after he wrote columns in 2020 with the season in jeopardy due to the pandemic analyzing Manfreds handling of the situation for The Athletic.

There was no stated suspension at the time and it went publicly unnoticed.

Rosenthal was still paid, but was put in a months-long penalty box. He did return for the trade deadline, which was pushed to Aug. 31 that season due to COVID-19.

Since then, Rosenthal had been regularly on MLBN, including as late as prior to Christmas on MLB Tonight, one of the networks signature shows. His contract was up at the end of last year.

Rosenthal, 59, remains at Fox Sports, where he is a fixture on its weekly coverage and is a dugout reporter for its top games, including the World Series. He also will continue at The Athletic.

Rosenthal declined to comment.

MLB Network has been changing its lineup over the past year. It previously let go of long-time personalities, including Chris Rose and Eric Byrnes.

Global sports retailer, merchandiser and now sports card and memorabilia giant Fanatics is acquiring Topps trading cards in a deal slated to be finalized Tuesday, sources familiar with the negotiations said Monday.

The deal includes Topps' collectables arm, both physical and digital, sources said.

Fanatics declined to comment on the news and financial terms of the agreement.

The move was suspected for some time, specifically since August, when Fanatics cemented a deal with Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association for the exclusive licenses to produce baseball cards, ending Topps' ability to produce them after roughly 60 years of being one of the sport's and hobby's most recognized brands.

The deal set to be finalized Tuesday means Fanatics Trading Cards' MLB and MLBPA rights to design, manufacture and distribute trading cards -- originally slated to start in 2026 -- will begin immediately.

Topps also has the rights to bourgeoning hobby darlings such as Formula 1, UEFA, Major League Soccer and Bundesliga, which significantly increases the scope of Fanatics Trading Cards, launched last year.

Fanatics also has long-term rights deals with the NBA, National Basketball Players Association and NFL Players Association.

I can understand the skepticism of the CDCs new policy, but personally I still trust them to follow the science to a reasonably fair degree despite the politicized nature of government institutions and their decision making. Its much like how I trusted them during the beginning of the pandemic when covid was deemed by the science to be much more severe than the flu, or that masks can help curb transmission, or even that all of us not only should get the vaccine but also the boosters. Frankly it just doesnt make sense to me to start distrusting the CDC now about following the science when it comes to policy making when the very policies I supported and believed to be supported by the science at the beginning of the pandemic was done by the same CDC. Perhaps thats just me though

There's a lot of countries that just blindly follow the US on shit even when they really have no reason to.

For example there's at least 5 Provinces in Canada that have now changed their isolation requirements to be in line with this, specifically citing the CDC and its changed recommendations.

And literally all discussion about it is about limiting the impact on businesses and "the economy".

Also it's important to point out here (and he does in the 5th and final tweet) - the US instituted this change without requiring people to get tested and pop-up negative before leaving isolation early.

Basically every other country that has cut down on isolation time still requires you to test negative to leave it early.
