My dad is high risk, my daughter is 3 and while risk may not be as high for her, I'd rather not become a statistic in denying the effectiveness of the vaccine while I'm on my deathbed like so many others. Ever since the vaccine was introduced I have been saying once it gets FDA approval I'd get it. Now it has been and I'm going to do what I can to keep my father and my child as safe as possible. You can judge me. That's your choice.

I will judge because the argument u made makes u sound even dumber. It's been half a year since its been available, proven safe, a d recommended by basically everyone doctor, cdc, nih, etc. Absolutely no reason to wait for FDA approval. Just a dumb excuse. U put ur dad and child at risk for 6 months for no reason.

The Food and Drug Administration on Monday granted full approval to Pfizer-BioNTechs coronavirus vaccine for people 16 and up, making it the first to move beyond emergency use status in the United States.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine will continue to be authorized for emergency use for children ages 12 to 15 while Pfizer collects the necessary data required for full approval. A decision on whether to authorize the vaccine for children younger than 12 could be at least several months away.

Depends on my situation. My answer my whole life was 'fuck no'. But now that I have 2 kids and we've been together for over 10 years, married for over 5, it gets complicated.

I would be a massive hit to my ego but I would take the hit and simply talk to her about it, try to overcome issues, and try to move on for the sole reason that our kids get to grow up with 2 parents in a single loving household. If it was repeated behavior, then things get tougher cuz its hard to fake a normal relationship and kids can see through that.

I think one thing a lot of people online just totally fail to understand on a lot of unvaccinated folks is that they're not really anti-vaccine, they're just dumb and/or uninformed.

We have the privilege of being able to easily navigate the internet and find out info on Covid from many different sources, fact check it, and come to the logical conclusion that it's fairly safe and we should get it. Even the busiest of us still practically live on the internet and can identify the sane from the insane, but many of the unvaccinated cannot.

At best they browse their facebook and get their conflicting info from there, along with mainstream news, which doesn't help the case when they're being told about side effects, it not being FDA approved, etc. Put yourself into the shoes of the technologically illiterate and older folks in general. Unlike in the past, the news today is a lot more at each others throats and without knowing how to find the proper info, you're really at the mercy of these shitty news programs and whatever dumb shit is being posted on facebook.

Its peoples choice to be misinformed. Its their choice to listen to facebook memes over the CDC/NIH and 99% of doctors out there.

nope, just have common sense. talk to one to find out how much you'd actually have to do to secure it.

https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/2o128r/how_safe_would_someone_be_if_they_were_inside_of/

what was that about common sense

The biggest danger with earthquakes and built structures is due to the fact that the ground accelerates very rapidly, while inertial forces due to the structure's mass resist that acceleration. Most of the damage from earthquakes is the result of what's known as story drift. Which is the relative motion of one floor to another. If the ground moves 45cm in one instant, the top floor will take some time to "catch up" with the ground floor, and by that time, the ground floor is usually moving in another direction, which ends up putting a very large amount of stress on the columns.
Now small underground structures will move in unison with the ground (commonly), so they tend to fair pretty well. However, long underground structures such as tunnels or pipes can be at risk if they say, cross the fault, and there is significant displacement between the two plates.

It sounds like you want to keep your family in a basement...

It also sounds like all of the things you would do in that basement, can just be done in the yard that is directly above the basement.

Again, its a space issue. Its basically a giant play-room made underground which leaves more space above ground to do other things. Like lets say a lawn to play soccer on, or a basketball hoop, or a garden, etc.

I just dont see the downside other than cost. And the cost shouldn't be THAT much since it'll essentially be underground in the backyard, not under any existing structures.

Ideally I'd have the other end connect to the base of the house, like at the patio so theres a nearby entrance. Ideally you wouldn't have to go outside to get to the basement but thats not super important.

If I'm living at this house for the next 15-20 years and this will be my kids' childhood home, I think its worth it. Imagine how many great memories we'll have, family movies on the projector in the basement, playing games, kids escaping and having their own fun. Even as adults they can chill there away from their parents and us parents can host friends to hang out there.

Again, any downside other than cost?

Problem with standalone is that it takes up yard space and we're also outdoors people. Like I want space for kids and myself to run around, kick a soccer ball around, play football, etc. The purpose would be to maximize space.

Don't care for a large house or anything. I just want a large yard. But in the yard I want to make a shed that will be the entrance to a large basement which will be used as a play-room for myself and kids. We'll have things like a pool table, foosball table, a fireplace, couches, video games, arcades, board games, projector, etc. I could take over a section of it and make a man-cave with a bar, TVs, lazy-boys..

I've never seen this anywhere. Growing up my neighbor custom built a house to include a basement. He had kids our age so thats where we always hung out. And you could be loud af and no one would hear.

Is that feasible and how much would it likely cost me?

My thoughts on education are this:
Every parent wants their kids to 'work hard in school' 'get good grades' 'go to the best school' 'go to the best college' 'be studious' 'be smart'
The problem is they do nothing at home to promote those same ideals and stimulate their kids intellectually. As much as their words promote school as a priority for kids, their actions speak otherwise and thats what kids will absorb. Theres also a difference between doing the average amount to get by and trying to excel. Theres a way to do it without putting stress on your kids. And at the end of the day everyone wants to blame the system when its the parents that have done a mediocre job. And that kind of work ethic and motivation are really instilled in a kids younger years up through middle school.
