Most people are criticizing the way he pulled out and the mess that followed, not the idea itself of leaving. Surely we could have done better than people clinging to airplane wheels and falling from the sky, and stranding US citizens that are still stuck there.

That is reasonable and IMO accurate as to what a lot of people are upset about.

I say a lot and not all because Im sure there are a bunch of Republicans who would have criticized Biden either way, regardless if the evacuation was well handled or not.

Of course those movies are fake, they're movies. People make fake things all the time. We all know they're fakes. You have no defense in this topic other than pointing out that they're not. Do you honestly believe that the average person can see enough to say that a fake is real or not when people are so used to seeing fakes that they don't even notice they're seeing fakes? That's like walking past an art gallery full of fake paintings and insisting that you can tell the difference between the real thing and the fakes.

Bruh, that reads like a copy pasta.

Nah, evolution does not always produce beneficial outcomes, though. The process for both eating and breathing, interfering with each other, could be seen this way.

oh, so you just dont understand the reality of the death penalty.

spoiler: it costs more than life imprisonment. As I said. I used the word literally. Because there are literally. No. Tangible. Benefits.

i guess you forgot the simple fact that you dont know what youre talking about.

You are deflecting.

Dont make the mistake of thinking youre the only person who knows that the cost of appeals and added court processes makes the death penalty a costly effort. We know that and it isnt in dispute. It comes up all the time here on CE whenever this topic arises. Regardless, it is irrelevant. You said there is no tangible benefit. That is false. We have prisons that are so full that they have released prisoners ahead of their sentencing term. In general, the US houses more convicts than other countries. This is a system that a lot of citizens want to reduce in scope and size. Death penalties do that in their own obvious way. This is tangible. Its why I gave it as one example.

There is literally no real, practical way that is actually true, and most people find that emotionally it isnt true either.

That seems very assumptive and dismissive, especially when you throw in the word literally.

Although its anecdotal, I do know several people who have lost loved ones to murderers. Not only was it emotionally draining and psychologically damaging, these people also suffered from a loss of contribution, for lack of a better word, from those deaths. The murdered were upstanding members of society, while the murderers were, well, not. The grieving families absolutely wanted them executed, but the death penalty was not available. Instead, the murderers get visits and phone calls from the family and friends they still have, and they get to chill and celebrate holidays, so it doesnt feel like closure for the grieving families at all. Thats what they tell me anyway and they have felt this way for more than two decades.

IIRC, the weapons were balanced a bit better in Quake II. At least it wasnt just a scramble for the rocket launcher. Rail gun and super shotgun were popular, too.

The reason why I say that is because I remember when they handed out MREs they gave them to us out of a box that contained random meals and we would barter with one another to trade for meals we actually wanted. Some people got stuck with vegetarian meals who werent even vegetarian. Theres a legitimate possibility that the soldiers were tossing out MREs to the afghans without actually reading what each individual MRE was serving, resulting in many people getting anything from pork, to vegetarian meals, to the infamous mcrib parody.

Theres also the possibility that they were separating pork MREs for a while and have started running out of non pork MREs and were forced to (either directly by someones decision, or indirectly because of the circumstances) stop being picky and hand the people whatever was available.

Im not saying that its absolutely impossible for a soldier to have made a conscious decision to start handing out pork, actually it CERTAINLY IS possible, but what Im saying is that there are multiple possible explanations as well and well never know because all we have is one persons story.

@2SweetforTurtle
That is a very reasonable explanation. Thanks for the insight.

Captain Marvel was formulaic and had nothing stand out, as in the acting was just Ok, Larson was not bad but pretty bland Sam Jackson was just being himself and there was no interesting villain. If anything that movie shouldve scored maybe 50 percent, so 79 percent of critics vouching for it is a nearly 30 percent bump up. What more could they want?

Oh, I take it back. The cat was unexpected, I guess.

kelemvor posted...
At any rate, the whole excuse to not have kids because of the shitty state of the world is a horrible argument. Most of us have parents or grandparents that were conceived during WW2 or the Cold War where things looked much, much, bleaker for mankind.

Ive thought about that a lot of over the years and went a step further.

Consider that modern humans are accepted to be around 200,000 years old. Thats basically 8,000 generations of ancestors for each of us. Now imagine them dodging saber-tooth cats in a field or a crocodile at a watering hole, hunting everything from rodents to wooly mammoths, battling their neighbors with jagged sticks and stones, trying to survive the beginnings of malaria and other killers like the Black Plague, and going their whole lives without antibiotics and other basic medical care. It probably took a lot of luck and incredible determination to not only survive, but also successfully have children and then protect those children. This was an unbroken chain of precarious events for thousands of years, until we showed up and decided we are too sad, frustrated or maybe apathetic to keep going.

Of course its everyones right to choose whether or not to have a child and I agree its selfish to continue our genetic line. But it does fuck with my head a bit when I think of all those people before me, and thats not even taking into account the ancestors stretching back millions of years, that we wouldnt even recognize as human but who also fought desperately to survive and procreate against the odds.

I though under the great god-given capitism system we live under that rich people are smart and successful by virtue of being rich, and therefore deserve the fruits of their labor. That's capitialism, if you're poor you're dumb and deserver nothing, if you can afford a $3 million house you are smart and a good capitalist. He pulled himself up by his bootstraps!

Their message is not entirely wrong, but its incredibly hard for a lot of us to take seriously because they do not actually seem to believe what they are spouting. Hes talked before about being anti rich, anti US and all that, but he directly profits greatly from all of it. Basically, he wants you to fight the good fight and make the sacrifice, not him. This is very analogous to those right wing politicians who rail against abortion or homosexuality, then we find out that they have paid for abortions or are closeted with internalized hate.
