| kind9 09/07/21 4:12:22 PM #8 | I usually spend the first 6+ days exploring the map. That might be overkill, but I like to know where every biome is as soon as possible, and there's a better chance of finding chester and chess monsters to kill for gears to craft an ice box. Look out for mountain and swamp biomes, chess biomes, beefalo, rabbits, spiders, and touch stones. Make a hammer and destroy pig heads around touch stones. You'll want the pig skin later. I like to start in fall so I don't have to deal with the constant rain in spring, and I think it's easier to survive winter after the first month than summer. I like to build my base near rabbit holes and spider nests for the constant source of food and spider webs. You can drop traps on rabbit holes and near spider nests if you didn't know. When spider nests are tier 3 you have to destroy them and re-plant them, or else they become a spider queen. If you build a fire pit it won't set nearby things on fire. Only the regular campfire does that. You should have at least one crock pot, ice box, and bee box in your camp. Try to get a bird cage and trap a bird. Feed it vegetables and meat to get seeds and eggs. Plant flowers around the bee box to increase production rate. Use eggs and honey to cook honey ham and ham & eggs in the crock pot. If you find walrus camps while exploring wait until winter the walrus will come out and start pathing towards you on the map. If you kill him there's a chance he'll drop his hat, and it's a pretty good hat that gives sanity and warmth. Use a sewing kit to repair it, don't let it break, because you can't craft it. Another good, cheap hat to make is the top hat. It gives a lot of sanity regen and rain blockage. Collect hound teeth and use them to make spike traps. Plant them very close to each other and eventually have a large field of them. Run hounds through them and that's an easy way to take care of them. When you find a treeguard you can easily kill it by kiting its attacks, or plant pine cones to make it stop aggro, preferably away from your tree farm. You can use them later to help fight hounds and bosses. The thermal stone is key to survival in winter and summer. Put it near a fire to warm it, or near endothermic fire or in ice box to cool it. Then carry it around in your inventory. Build ice flingers around your base to stop fires. Build lightning rods to deflect lightning and prevent fires. During rain use a regular umbrella instead of the parasol. There is a Don't Starve wiki that you should use often. --- |
