I listened to this album a fair few times when it came out, but after digesting it a bit, I came to the decision that there was something about Of Monsters and Men that made me not want to pursue their discography further when they started releasing new music. Let's see if any of that opinion holds up.

So yeah after my first listen in quite a long time, I'm left with the same gripe. Of Monsters and Men, at least on this album, rely on melodic vocal fills far too much. Don't get me wrong, I love a good "la la la" or "oh oh oh" or "hey" or what have you, but I think I counted like nine songs on this album utilize them and at a certain point it just feels disingenuous and becomes highly distracting for me. I don't know if they stepped away from this going forward or not because I don't think I've heard a single song by them not on this album.

That being said, I do not dislike this album, though it does suffer from a bit of inconsistency. The first portion is very strong, but it suffers a drop in quality reminiscent of, though not as great as, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. There's an oasis in the middle with the best song on the album and OMAM's most recognizable tune, but the stuff surrounding it lost my attention a bit and is where the album started feeling long. Luckily it rebounds a bit in the back portion.

So yeah. I think this is a good album, but not one I go back to (nor do I hardly ever select any songs for playlists) because my brain gets annoyed by it. I recognize this as unfair, but I can't help it.

I'm glad you didn't hate it! Light Chasers is an important album for me because I discovered it, as well as the band, during a vulnerable time in my life, so it makes sense that the heavy push for emotion appealed to me. It was also designed to be a concept album and those can be a tad hamfisted. The lead singer, who does most of the writing, definitely prefers to get lost in topics dealing with some sort of existentialism. Sometimes it's an emphasis on positivity and optimism and sometimes it's an emphasis on searching for meaning.

I can 100% understand how someone can come away with the opinions you did regarding the pursuit of emotion and the "indie spirit" or whatever we want to refer to it as. The band's studio is a literal cabin in the woods, so they are all about being wrapped up in it. I'll take your takeaway as a win.

My assumption is that trailer was targeted at book readers. As somebody who didn't read the books and knows nothing about The Wheel of Time series, I understood nothing from the trailer. It felt like there was A LOT packed into it.

All that said, I'll still check the show out when it debuts. I have enough friends excited for it that I'd like to join in on the discourse.

Not sure how much of a difference it makes based on what we've seen so far, but from the FAQ on the game's website:

Is it the same engine as Stardew Valley?
No, its a new engine written in C#/Monogame however there are some areas where I can reuse code from Stardew Valley, so that is nice.

While I'm pulling from the FAQ, a couple of other interesting tidbits:

Does it take place in the world of Stardew Valley?
Im not ready to reveal anything like that just yet.

Is the gameplay similar to Stardew Valley?
In some ways, yes, but in many ways, no.
Like Stardew Valley, Haunted Chocolatier is another town game, where you move to a new town and try your hand at a new way of living. Youll get to know the townspeople, achieve your goals and make progress in many ways. All of that is similar to Stardew Valley. However, the core gameplay and theming are quite a bit different. Haunted Chocolatier is more of an action-RPG compared to Stardew Valley. And instead of a farm being the focal point of your endeavors, its a chocolate shop.

He said in a response on Twitter that the game won't cost more than Stardew ($15), which is awesome because he could no doubt charge $30 and most people would still buy it.

I have no issues whatsoever with it being so reminiscent of Stardew. He is a lone creator and if he has found a niche in the market and can be the gold standard inside of it, he should run with it for as long as he wishes. The first time through Stardew was amazing and if I could go back into it blind, I would. This, in a way, gives me that opportunity.

I've been playing ToCS 1 after playing through TitS and Trails from Zero. It's been fairly pleasant. I'm trying to take my time since I don't want to play the 3rd ToCS game before playing Azure when it finally gets localized.

My favorite trope of the series is how literally everyone who cooks a meal for the main party is an amazing, astounding, life-changing cook.

Also this game has probably the best environmental sound design I've heard in a game.

Yes the sound design is quite remarkable. Mining a rock or chopping a tree sounds so satisfying and the echoes throughout the environment is beautifully done.

An interesting thing happened on my server yesterday. The leader of the largest companies on the server leading one of the towns for my faction ended up being a traitor. He raised the taxes on the Monarch's Bluffs, kicked everyone from the company, and joined another faction. It sucks because Monarch's Bluffs is where I had been storing all my stuff and doing all my crafting, so I had to move all my stuff to another hamlet. It cost a fair bit of gold. There is a war for the territory scheduled for Wednesday against the faction he joined.

It gives me strong Runescape vibes where almost everything is a skill you can raise. It'll be interesting to see how the playerbase holds up over time, especially when the new FFXIV expansion drops in a month.

I didn't expect to, but I found myself owning the game and have been pretty into it so far. $40 and no subscription fee is a fair ask, I'd say. I like the classless nature of it and the ability to respec both weapon trees and character attributes freely until level 20 is a great idea that allows you to really explore each weapon and skill tree. I haven't dabbled in the PvP yet, but I like the idea of it being faction-based and am excited for the point where I feel comfortable trying my hand at that. There's a Corruption Invasion later today that I'm going to hop on and see what that is like.

All that said, I'm very much looking forward to a future roadmap. I'm hoping they'll be able to add in more weapons and skill trees and also features like dual wielding or the ability to equip a shield with more than just a sword or at the very least offer other off-hand equipment. Also the enemy spawns are ridiculous right now and make it hard to level up your character or look at any drops unless you run away from the area you are in.

Anybody else have impressions?
