You should really talk to them if you're new. Random asshole hidden in a corner on an optional route? They even changed Nidoran so it learned Double Kick early instead of at like, 50 or whatever ridiculous thing it used to be. Yeah, I remember spamming Ember and winning. Granted I was older when I played RBY, so I don't know if little kid me would have picked up "Use Growl if Onix used Bide" or not. Assuming it doesn't just spam Tackle against Charmander instead. Misty is the actual wall if you don't understand the mechanics, because she will cleanly one shot Charmeleon (Or knock it into the red) with Bubblebeam. She can also easily take out Pikachu, because Pikachu sucks. If you don't go out and catch and raise a Oddish/Bellsprout, Charmander players have a real bad time.
