Significantly more leftist things. Things that would actually hurt people's wealth if passed. SOFI has taken a big beating recently. I sold my warrants part of the way through the decline after they announced they were forcefully redeeming the warrants so it was impossible to keep holding them. Anyway, it looks to be at a very nice price point now so I'm looking to get back in on the shares.

See now this is wild. There's a couple options for what is happening here.

1. Manchin lied to Biden about his commitment and went back on it (what Jayapal claims)
2. Manchin is lying to Jayapal about NOT committing to protect his reputation
3. Manchin really didn't commit, but Biden lied to Jayapal to get her to pass the infrastructure bill
4. Jayapal is just trying to save face for not blocking infrastructure when she had the chance

Whatever way you slice it this just a complete mess of incompetence on display

Unless someone can articulate what Manchin committed to, none of this is surprising or a breach of a commitment. He committed to negotiate. He did. They couldn't reach a deal because they were too far apart.

This is like contracting to have a painting made and agreeing to buy it if you like it.

Yeah. I don't really think too hard about contract costs-- just means you fork over $0.01 of profit on the contract basically. E-Trade charges $0.50 per.

Sitting on 18 3c for this week and 47 3.5c for next week. If we moon this next week I'll be a happy camper to say the least. Still think $4ish by end of day is plausible-- just wait till Robinhood locks out contracts in 15 minutes.

I wish Etrade hadn't been bought out so I could invest in them. This is exactly the attitude I like to see as an investor in a brokerage. That 50 cents per contract is a super profit center for the brokerage. If the customer doesn't mind paying it then I call that value added. Everyone wins!

Why is Scalito so low

He's not Scalia. I admit I haven't read enough opinions to really speak with too much confidence, but my impression is that his views are too mainstream conservative/neocon for my liking. For example, he dissented in the Westboro Baptist Church case because protesting a soldier's funeral was beyond the pale, while the other 8 upheld the extremely strong free speech right we have. Plus, he hasn't really done much in the development of interesting legal doctrines.

The average yearly return on the S&P 500 is like 7% after inflation. That's $350k per year (albeit before taxes) without even eating into the principle... pretty sure most people can get by with much less than that.

Yeah but it's not consistent. I think retirement experts usually say that if you retire at age 65, you can safely spend about 4% of your assets per year that you have at the time of retirement per year and avoid running out. Spending more than that risks a drawdown occurring in the market which becomes crushingly severe due to your also spending too much.

We would follow the model of the UK prior to 1832 when districts could remain static for centuries even when there were massive population changes. Different districts would eventually have different populations but would always elect one representative each.

I think that job actually suits Trump well. The House is supposed to be the populist house of Congress.

However, if Trump gets elected President in 2024 he should lay down his speakership. I'm actually surprised the framers didn't include a clause in the constitution against one person holding multiple high offices of state, because that is how the Roman Republic collapsed into one-person rule.

This is the kind of thing I want to do. Can help me understand what this is called so I know what to select?

Is this the one where you're either going to get shares at low price if the price goes up or overpay if the price stays down? So it's fine as long as you're okay with owning more shares?

It's also a way to get leverage without actually taking on margin. You can get the upside for the same number of shares with a small fraction of the capital invested. The downside is the risk of the money you put in has a pretty high chance of going to zero. But since it's a much smaller amount of money, the risk in some sense is lower. Unless you do the WSB strategy of deciding that you can buy calls representing vastly vastly more shares than you could possibly afford to exercise. Which you can do if you want the riches or bust risk profile.

Also to be clear 99%+ of the value of my ZM position is in shares not calls and I am really not seeing the case for how this could be worth less than the $130-140/share or so you would get if you gave it a P/E ratio equal to other tech companies with much lower growth rates. So I don't think there is very much downside at this point. Actually, maybe it would be better to reduce the total capital involved and buy more calls.

Theres currently a norm against court packing that is preventing either side from doing it. Such a norm does not exist for gerrymandering, so if one side restrains themselves they just get screwed. For gerrymandering I think most of us agree that it would be preferable if such a norm did exist, so I find it interesting that so many people here are so pro-packing when both sides pack is pretty clearly worse than neither side packs (especially with a huge structural advantage for the GOP in the Senate!)

From what Ive been reading that seems to be what Roberts wants, but all of the other justices seem willing to kill it (thread):

https://twitter.com/ameliatd/status/1466088902234710019?s=21

Nothings for certain until the ruling is issued, of course, but Im not optimistic.

I mean, if you believe in originalism (the words in the Constitution mean what they would have meant to a reasonable person reading them at the time they were written), Roe is pretty obviously not rooted in the Constitution. So if they want to attack it, it's quite easy.

But if they think as much about politics as many liberals think they do, well, the timing of this case is really bad. In June they will only be 7 months away from a Senate that ought to be in GOP control for decades based on the inherent advantage of small states there. The only thing endangering the triumph of the conservative vision of the Constitution would be for the Democrats to pack the courts before then. And overturning Roe would dramatically increase the probability of that happening I think. From something very low to something that is still kinda low but feels risky.

The smart thing to do politically would be to kick the can down the road for now and then move forward with major precedential decisions after January 2023.

Things are fair and the Republicans have just managed to finally undo decades of Democrat gerrymandering and court packing stretching back to FDR.

Also, I'm pretty doubtful they actually overturn Roe v. Wade. Think it's more likely they find a way to limit it without actually taking the final step of overturning it.

The baseline interpretation was already he's definitely a right-leaning dumb ass who's giving anyone who approaches him with sympathy the time of day. Honestly, this doesn't really change that.

But I am very much devil's advocating here. I want to be crystal clear on that.

I will say I believe he fired his original lawyers over the PB stunt. Whether he actually knew or not and whether his objections were anything but strategy is a different matter that we really only have his and his lawyer's word on.

I think there's a real chance he loses the case if he goes to trial with his original lawyers. If they were going to focus on politics at trial and paint him as a right wing activist, he could lose.
