I still think the games should have focused less on combat. The Sands of Time had very cheesable combat encounters, but each successive game sought to pad out the combat and I kinda don't like it.

The Prince of Persia games are incredible puzzle games. I don't play them for the swashbuckling, I play them for the puzzles.

The Love Guru isn't good by any means, but it's remotely watchable in the right context. I've seen like half of it, and it's one of those movies in the vein of Little Man and Don't Mess with the Zohan where I wouldn't sit down to watch them in any reasonable capacity, but they break the silence and they're okay for a brain-dead goof or two.

The best part of Movie 43 is the Red Letter Media review where one of them says it ends with 10 minutes of 9/11 footage. I can't believe some Hollywood scumbag called on all of his favors, probably exploited a lot of blackmail material, to get the world's least funny sketch movie made with an all-star cast. I feel bad for everyone involved in this turd.

Haven't seen the last one.

I just found out a band called The Weepies is breaking up. They've been my most listened to band on Spotify for two years in a row. Kinda spamming my socials about it at the moment, it really cuts deep because finding them over the last few years has been one of the few bright spots in my life.

Last year I was in their top 0.05% of listeners, and this year I was in their top 0.0005% of listeners. They probably didn't have many listeners, hence the break-up. But the thing is that they're a husband and wife duo, so like are they splitting up?

Either way, the last two years have really fucking sucked and these guys have been the glue holding it all together. So this announcement really fucking hurts. I get that it's a sane, rational decision from two independent and autonomous people, but I have to say it - fuck 2021 for spitting in my face one last time. I hope this year and everything in it burns to the fucking ground.

Honestly, the top songs are all playlist fodder. I had a crush at the start of the year, and I spent a few months nursing some emotional wounds when it didn't turn out so great.

The Weepies are no joke though. They were my most listened to artist last year too:

If anything, I listened to more of them this year, if that top percentage of listeners is for real. That, or less people listened to them this year.

Next year will probably be a toss-up between the Weepies and Phoebe Bridgers.

Remember when Halo and Assassin's Creed had whole-ass NOVELS?

Honestly this is an issue I have with Mortal Kombat nowadays. It's not just game lore, there's a Mortal Kombat X comic book that has like 50 issues and it fills in the gaps between the time jump, and it builds up characters like Frost and Skarlet before they came back into the fray with MK11.

I always thought MKX felt very threadbare because there was that timeskip and everything changed so much in that time, but since we're following Cassie Cage and the Canon Character Kids - you'll have to forgive me for not using K in place of C in that statement, for obvious reasons - you just sort of gloss over it because that's the world these characters grew up in. Who the fuck is Erron Black? What's the deal with Kotal Khan? Even when their role is explained, it's like who the fuck is this character to begin with?

Turns out you get a lot of important characterisation in the 50 issue comic book series.

And then you have Destiny, where all of its lore was locked behind these lore cards that directed you to the Destiny website. Who in the name of fuck thought that was a good idea?

I don't play a game because of its wide-spanning multimedia empire. Give me a complete game with tight writing and next to no reliance on external sources.

The university paid $175,000 to a private firm to clean up their image, a part of which was burying this image so it was harder to find on Google:

https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-uc-davis-pepper-spray-20160414-story.html

Whether you agree with acts of protest, whether it be the Occupy movement of the time or later movements like BLM, I think we can all agree that walking along a line of sitting protestors and dousing them with pepper spray at eye-level is a shitty thing to do. They're obstructing a path, but they're not hurting anyone and they're clearly in a passive position.

It's an hour or two into December where I live. Another 31 days and 2021 will be over.

This year has been dogshit for me. I've really been slipping lately, losing my touch and fucking up on here as well as on other platforms, and the last 8 months have basically been a bumpy downwards slide into the most advanced depression I've felt in years.

Not an excuse to make me out as a victim, please hold me to account, but still undeniably a fact - 2021 is a strong contender for the worst year of my life. Shit sucks on a major level.

Music was my solace this year. That Minecraft flat world I keep posting about was a balm I needed, and I keep returning to it to work on it little by little - but music was a constant relief, and I would say it was the backbone of my year. In the past couple months I found Phoebe Bridgers, her brand of sadgirl indie pop has resonated with me in a big way lately. Maria Mena put out a new project at the end of last year, with a sequel to that EP slated for March this year, but she shelved it until Norway's concert venues were able to be re-opened. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard put out two albums - not their strongest outings, but O.N.E. is a GOAT desert rock song and their music video for Pleura fucks hard.

But more than that, music was a sorely needed pillar of support this year. There were a couple moments where it wasn't needed - I listened to three songs in a row about suicide by drowning after a traumatic experience this past May, I didn't intend for it to happen but it did - and while I wouldn't say I'm at risk of anything like that, it led to a very dark couple of days where that's all I could think about.

But more often than not? Music really pulled me out of the fire. Like you know that greentext that's like ">listen to music, >it's good, >thank you music"? That sums up my year.

I wanted to share some songs that got me through 2021, and I encourage you to post your own. Stories are optional, but feel free to vent and share itt if you need it.

A big one for me this year was The Ship Song by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. I overplayed it so hard I ended up defaulting to the Puddles Pity Party cover, which I also wore out pretty quickly.

https://youtu.be/q4VWKbZkIcM
https://youtu.be/Cf1w5GUturU

It's such a cathartic song, like a hymn. It's like you're putting yourself on a line and singing into the universe. idk if this is considered a faux pas or not, but I actually got to sing it earlier this year at karaoke, and as self indulgent as it was, it was a highlight of my year.

A very large and flat one. I only saw the Fast and Furious movies last year, and the X-Men movies the year before that. Tended to be kind of a snob as a teenager, part of it was because I was poor and couldn't go to the movies that often, but my old friends began to fill the holes in my media literacy the past three years.

I'm interested in the Matrix partially because of the trans lens you can view the first movie through. The other two, I just want to see if they're as bad as people say or if they're perfectly acceptable movies on their own. At which point, I'll probably watch a detailed YouTube video on both the Animatrix and the MMO that's allegedly canonical to the new movie, and then I'll watch this new movie.

Tobey Maguire not being able to play the character for shit is what makes the Raimi movies so good, though. That's why I made a topic a little while back asking if the Raimi movies were good or camp - cases can be made for both. Tobey Maguire plays a high school student like an awkward 30 year old man, and it's fucking great.

Bruce Campbell couldn't sell being a zombie slaying badass for the most part, he can after he gets an action upgrade in Evil Dead 2 but until then he's just this awkward douchebag who breaks plates over his head because his hand gets possessed. But the Evil Dead movies are great whether Ash Williams is a pathetic loser or a geared up badass pushed to his breaking point. Sam Raimi makes both halves of that dichotomy entertaining.

I like Spider-Man outside of the Raimi movies, I was huge on the 90's cartoon when I was a kid, but because I was into the cartoons and the merch rather than the comics, I can fudge some aspects of the character for what I find more entertaining. Andrew Garfield could have leapt from the page into live-action, but I just don't like watching him. Maybe the character in the suit, but him? I'm personally not a big fan.

Whatever the fuck Tobey Maguire was doing, it worked for me. He looks weird and neurotic, his lines are delivered so cheesily and he sells the Raimi quirkiness surprisingly well. Even if it's cringe and hokey, Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker has character - and as stiff and removed as he can feel dubbing over Spider-Man, that version of Spider-Man is still immensely entertaining to watch. He doesn't have to align with some mythologized template of what Spider-Man has to be - he himself is a blast to watch.

Andrew Garfield might be just as good, but I just don't care. And frankly, Tom Holland is a bland Iron Man junior - every appearance has him being overshadowed by Iron Man, intentionally or not, to the point that he feels like a blank slate. People talk about the Marvel movies devolving into paint-by-numbers schlock, and the MCU Spider-Man is the epitome of that - he has nothing of his own to stand on. I don't think Tom Holland's portrayal has character, whereas both Ned and MJ's actors do add some sort of spice to the movies through their acting. I think the character's themes are reliant on other characters, which doesn't make Peter Parker all that engaging. Tom Holland's Spider-Man feels more like a smaller cog in something bigger than his own character - from the start, when he was drafted into an interpersonal conflict by Tony Stark, to his most recent movie where the theme was explicitly being caught in Tony Stark's shadow and having to clean up after one of the guy's many enemies.

All I really have to say is that Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man entertains me, Andrew Garfield and the whole general aesthetic of his movies turn me off, and nothing about the MCU Spider-Man comes across as his own character. He feels like a crutch. Spiderverse was fucking fantastic though, that shit oozed charm and style, and despite having like 6 Spider-men, they all felt like fleshed out characters. I don't get that from the live-action MCU Spider-Man. I sure get it from Tobey Maguire's offbeat incel ass though - fucking excellent performance.

I mean, fwiw I've always been a bit wary about Big Doctor Event things. Wasn't at all a fan of the Doctor's name being this grand apocalyptic force that could end the universe if uttered, initially had my reservations about the War Doctor until I saw the 50th anniversary special, wasn't exactly thrilled to see Clara meld with the Doctor's timeline and shift the character to where he was today - or end up causing the childhood Doctor's fear of monsters under his bed, for that matter. The Doctor just is - I don't mind getting more backstory, unexplored or otherwise hinted at during the show, but I feel like it's not really necessary and that info should come slowly and sparingly.

In Chibnall's run, we've had the revelation that the Doctor isn't even a Time Lord - they're a progenitor species discovered by the first Time Lord, the source of all of Gallifrey's power. I was okay with that because frankly, Pandora's box had already been open with all of the legendary feats Moffat's run attributed to the Doctor - doubling his previously listed age by having Eleven spend a thousand years on Trenzalore, having the Doctor reboot the universe, making the Doctor's name this grave secret, all the stuff with River Song being the Doctor's wife, etc. If Moffat can make changes, so can future showrunners.

With that being said, I think if a showrunner is going to drop this Massive Character Lore for a 50+ year old character with 40 seasons of television behind them, they should only get one big revelation. Davies had the Time War, and that informed his entire era of the show. Moffat had a whole clusterfuck of stuff, but I'd say his biggest mark as showrunner was adding the War Doctor. And Chibnall has the Timeless Child.

I'm already annoyed at all of the stuff Moffat did, and while I'm on board with the Timeless Child due to precedent - and due to liking the possibilities it opens - I don't think this should be the era to drop the Doctor's parents on top of all the stuff that's already going on. It's unnecessary. I'm unabashedly a Russell T. Davies fanboy, but I'm not even saying to leave that story nugget for him to mine - I just don't think it's relevant or important yet, and given that the Doctor's parents have remained a mystery long before the Timeless Child stuff, I can easily see it remaining a mystery for longer.

There'll be plenty of time to have a storyline exploring where the Doctor actually came from, who her people are and who her parents are. I just don't think it has to be Bel and Vinder, on top of the Timeless Child and the Division and the TARDIS being corrupted and all of that. Chibnall has the Timeless Child. That's enough for one showrunner.

I've heard that theory before, but I just don't see why people think that's the case. I think it's just because Bel is pregnant.

I hate going "ruined forever!" about stuff, it's stupid and petty. The Doctor's parents being these two characters, on top of the timeless child stuff and the division stuff, would be the threshold at which I call Chibnall on his bullshit and re-evaluate how much I like the show.

TopicWhy in the right mind would anyone quit a job like nursing?
MrMallard
11/29/21 7:42:13 AM
#54
The way I see it is that nurses do a lot of the routine grunt work, taking blood and attaching drips and attending the general body of patients for their daily needs. The bulk of caring for admitted patients falls to nurses, many of whom do long, unforgiving shifts.

In my experience, doctors tend to have weekends off short of an emergency, and while they do the initial diagnosis and make time to attend to their admitted patients, you're seeing a nurse most of the time you're in hospital. Doctors get to go home at night, the nursing staff is there 24 hours a day.

You need doctors and the expertise they have to diagnose and treat, absolutely. They're paid the big bucks for a reason - they're specialists. But nurses are absolute packhorses, doing a majority of the work that comes with the job on a 24 hour time schedule, with shifts that can approach 12 hours at a time depending on the staffing situation at their place of work.

The issue with cutting public health funding is that the nurses who do that essential work don't get paid properly, hospital equipment never gets updated which means the work can't be carried out efficiently, nurses tend not to have any recourse when they're treated badly by patients or co-workers, and hospitals will cut nursing staff to an absolute minimum and keep the least amount of people on call working the longest shifts legally allowed to save money. You can make some great money in the short-term, but do the short-term benefits make up for the hardships in the long run?

So if your cousin or whatever has taken a look at their profession and gone "I can't do this as a career", I don't blame them. Whether the money is going towards them or the places they work, nurses are the people who most feel the pinch when healthcare services are underfunded - right next to patients. They cope with belligerent people, they deal with piss and shit and blood on a daily basis, and they work longer hours than you or me on average.

There's plenty of reasons not to want to be a nurse.

Tecteun should have been the big bad, with the Ravagers being a secondary threat. That way, she could have gone into the specials, with the Division being the final threat the Doctor has to face.

For five episodes straight, the Ravagers keep getting what they want and fucking off into space. And now they've killed Tecteun, one of the most important characters in the Timeless Child storyline.

They couldn't give Tecteun one more episode? Left it at a cliffhanger with then dusting the Ood or something?

I've liked this episode, but I am very, very torn on the way they ended episode 5. Goddamn.

CE is really like this meme:

Pretty much every childhood escape for the "othered" tends to lead to a queer awakening or to falling in with bigots. You can see it with the ideological divide of CE.

I don't have much to ask, except do you wanna see more trans memes I have saved on my phone?

Assuming this is about Andrew - honestly, fuck that guy. I'm sorry you went through this, but he always gave me a really bad vibe. Sometimes you find someone who's in pain, and you want to help them even as your relationship worsens and falls apart because despite your differences you don't want them to be hurt. But you should always be looking out for your own wellbeing, even as you try to be a good partner and help someone through their troubles.

I don't mean to be rude, but what I've seen regarding Andrew has been really discouraging - picking up dudes off the street to have threesomes without asking you, going into rages due to prior experiences that make you hurt due to your sense of empathy wanting to help someone who's emotionally wounded, stuff like that. Dude's been through a lot, sure, but you shouldn't have to give heaping fistfuls of yourself to him in the hopes of easing his pain.

While I don't condone cheating, as was the controversy in that discord chatroom we used to share, I felt like I understood in your case. It seemed like you had found someone who was better for you, who probably made you feel better than the relationship with Andrew did, and the prospect of leaving Andrew was probably incredibly uncomfortable due to the reaction he could have to it, both in how it might hurt him and how it might backfire on you.

And while the controversy was over you not splitting up with Andrew - considering what he's like and how he just fucking beat you? I can see why that was a move you had trouble making, even if it was the best thing to do. Because he might have fucking beat you.

I'm probably out of line to a degree to say what I'm saying, but Andrew was a scary dude and it's absolutely horrific that he reached a point that he thought that beating you was anything approaching the realm of acceptable. The relationship felt like it was degrading for a long time, from my limited external viewpoint, and I'm glad you're at least out of that relationship and free to make the most of your life without having the shadow of this guy's shit to contend with.

Dude had problems and I respect that you felt empathy for him and wanted to help him, but someone hitting you should absolutely be a deal-breaker in any relationship and I think you're right to split up with him. I apologize for the end of your relationship, and for being as candid as I have been in this post, but I legitimately think this is for the best in the long run - even if it takes a while for you to get back on your feet, I hope that going forward, you can be in a better position and hopefully heal from what's happened with Andrew.

Here's another one: workers should be satisfied with what they have because if they campaign for higher pay and more benefits, the businesses will shut down and move overseas, and then there won't be any jobs left.

Which is basically just saying "let yourself be exploited, otherwise they'll take your job to somewhere else where they can get away with exploiting their workers even more."

More or less, haha. I gummed this thread up with long fan rants, mb - the bug bit me when I saw this post I guess.

Tomorrow is episode five out of six. I hope they start to wrap up the season to some degree, especially in regards to the Ravages. Even if Vinder and Bel are in the next three specials in 2022, there has to be some closure at the end of this season imo. If the Flux storyline spills into the 2022 specials, or if this season ends on a cliffhanger, I'm gonna be pretty buttmad at the lack of resolution.

So before I start, I want to acknowledge that I'm a total Bruce Lee newbie. I saw my first Bruce Lee thing tonight, and it was the final fight from Way of the Dragon - I don't know shit, and I'm probably going to be talking about stuff like I know what I mean, but I'm just going off of my gut here. I'm approaching this very much from an "internet expert" sort of angle, and I make no case for anything else.

With that being said, though - Game of Death is an exploitative dog turd of a movie.

While I was watching it, I looked up the story behind it. I was paying enough attention to the story to follow along, but it wasn't a great movie. There's roughly 42 minutes of material Bruce Lee shot in 1972, 11 minutes of which are in the 1978 movie, and the plot was Bruce Lee fighting his way up a pagoda using his signature style of martial arts to explain the flaws in his opponent's fighting style. It sounds like an author tract about how awesome his fighting style was, to the point that the movie was intended to be informational about Bruce Lee's martial art style - but you can see how awesome the fights were gonna be when you see three of them at the end of the movie.

And what I've heard is that the footage that exists features a lot of dialogue steeped in allegory and metaphor. Why is Bruce Lee fighting all of these Kung Fu masters to get to the top of the pagoda, outside of the excuse plot of a loved one in danger? Why does he have to fight his way up at all - why not just let him pass if even the guardians aren't that invested in what's at the top of the pagoda?

That's some classic Kung Fu movie shit. That sounds fucking awesome, like some 36th Chamber of Shaolin shit. And it only hurts all the more when the final product is this drawn out gangster movie with a slew of body doubles and unrelated characters acting out this dumb-ass plot.

The worst part about Game of Death is that they use footage from Bruce Lee's actual, real life funeral. The main character fakes his death, and the character has a public funeral, and they SHOW FOOTAGE OF BRUCE LEE'S ACTUAL FUCKING FUNERAL. And then later, they dig up the coffin to find out that the main character faked his death, and it has a ceramic bust of Bruce Lee's face - and they smash it apart on camera! They dig up Bruce Lee's grave and destroy his likeness in this shallow excuse to capitalise on his unfinished final movie!

The fight scene at the start with the motorbikes was probably the best non-Bruce Lee fight, the guy had a ton of swagger and it was pretty entertaining. But the love interest, the obvious attempts to obscure the main character's face and the bulk of this movie being between these old white guys just made the whole thing an unbearable slog. The whole thing feels so cheap and exploitative, like a cashgrab instead of a tribute.

We've really gotta stop making dead celebrity movies. The Inaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is one thing, that's a group of people rallying around to finish a movie in someone's memory. Killing the character off in a franchise is distinct yet again, because it is an attempt to honour the talent by putting the character to rest rather than have someone else fill those shoes.

Game of Death is more like dead guy CGI nowadays, except in the case of dead guy CGI there's at least been this attempt to reverently restore the characters and hold them in the highest regard. Even if the way Leia speaks in the Rise of Skywalker is like a malfunctioning smart fridge and arguably less dignified than just writing around it and letting her rest in peace, everything about that role is meant to elevate and deify both the character and the actress.

Game of Death only exists because the company that made it owned a handful of unreleased Bruce Lee footage, and they milked a feature-length production out of a cast of Bruce Lee body doubles, uncharismaric time wasting heroes and villains, and the coolest fucking costume of Bruce Lee's entire career if only he'd been able to make the sort of movie that would have done it justice. It's like if they turned John Wick into a midday TV movie.

Again, I only saw Bruce Lee act for one fight before this. But the man has this fucking aura around him, he exudes charisma. He's at the top of his game, his moves are awesome, but he also makes those whooping noises there are kind of funny? And his contorts his face into these fucking wild shapes, and it's like not only is he a god-tier fighter, he's a TROLL. He's playing grab-ass with Chuck Norris, and then he changes his stance and annihilates the guy. You see Bruce Lee like that, and you just fucking get it.

How often do you see a fight scene where the characters exude any sort of personality? Where you see the look on a guy's face as he's kicking someone's ass, and you fucking get what they're about? Bruce Lee is the man, and even in the few scenes of Game of Death he's in, he has a vibe about him where he's more and more affected the higher he climbs the building - not just from the fighting, but from the weight of what he's doing. None of which the final product is trying to convey, but which exists anyway.

Not only did they rip out those three fight scenes and put them out of context in a dogshit movie, they have the actual gall to show Bruce Lee's actual, real life funeral, then dig up the casket and defile his likeness. It really sums up what this dog turd of a movie really was. I'm new to the guy, but based on next to no frame of reference, Game of Death is a sleazy, exploitative failure, and it bothers me that such a GOAT actor and martial artist gets his legacy dragged through the mud like this.
