It's really hard to not let the gameplay affect this score but... I'll say 4.5/10. It does a decent job trying to fill in a perceived gap in the MGS timeline, but it doesn't really work and kind of undermines Gray Fox as a character I think. I don't like any of the original villains. It's no surprise that when Kojima made Peace Walker all that was included was a single throwaway line.

This one is not good. If Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is peak mediocrity this is only marginally better. If the first one is too basic, this one is stuffed full of filler.

Superstar Saga is the most overrated Mario RPG.

I'll accept TTYD and Bowser's Inside Story being better, but that's it.

I'd say only TTYD honestly. The alphadream mario and luigi's are fun, but the pacing is all over the place. BiS is the best of them, and after the immediate introduction (which is good) it takes a looooooong time to get going.

Legit curious, what is this based on? I've heard nothing but good things from the demo and other early impressions.

people are gonna laugh, but skits/victory screens are a big deal for me. I don't think Tales games are all that great/original in terms of overall plot, so a large burden rests on character interaction. I flat out dislike the new way they're doing skits.

Again, I'm feeling 50/50 about the game so I'll be stoked if the story/battle system/exploration ends up blowing me away.

edit: also, i think even the most generous Tales fan will admit that the series as a whole is spotty in terms of peaks and valleys. a lot of games in the series begin amazingly and fizzle out midway through, while some of them are pretty bad throughout! I'm just being realistic.

Last I checked Astria Ascending (that vanilllaware lookin rpg that isn't actually vanillaware) is coming out on sept 30. should at least be nice to look at/have decent tunes.

if tales of arise ends up sucking (the chances of which are looking 50/50 imo) I'll probably switch to this

It breaks if I try to use it. I've had all kinds of problems with mine. I also can't sit on the home screen without a game open for any amount of time or it soft reboots over and over again. It's been a frustrating experience.

super weird. haven't had an issue over here, though I've only had my ps5 for a few months. one would think this would be covered by a warranty or something.

I'm weird so I voted the first option. I totally get why everyone says the second, but in my mind, I would say I'm moving an event "forward" an hour if I'm making it later, and "back" an hour if I'm making it earlier.

Played on normal. None of your concerns bothered me and seem to make some sense from a game design standpoint, but yeah, you don't die in 2 hits on normal!

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. Like you said, the overarching lore is pretty good but I was a bit unimpressed by the actual plot/characters of the game.

gameplay-wise birthright and conquest are fine. birthright's story is in my opinion not that bad, but a 5 sounds about right honestly

I've seen you post this in several topics, and I can't agree with that line of thinking at all. Divisive doesn't automatically mean good. Generating discussion doesn't automatically mean good. The Room generated a ton of discussion and it's exceptionally bad.

(Also FFTA isn't divisive. It's largely reviled and most of the people who like it, like it ironically.)

to be fair para doesn't say divisiveness = good, rather divisiveness=challenging or that it did what it set out to do, which is a different point, I think

I just really disagree with this. I've played tons of Atlus games and never felt as bogged down as playing DQXI

It's not about the length of the game, it's the tightness of the story. It felt like I played DQXI for 10 hours and achieved basically nothing. I ran errands for a town or something. It's filler.

Dragon Quest is all about your characters on a journey, with stops that may or may not immediately advance the overarching narrative. So yes, you might have to spend time in a town solving their town-specific mystery. In this way, it's a lot like (early) One Piece. Is "Sky Island" filler? Some people say yes, some say no.

Having a "loose" story rather than a tight narrative like Persona 5 is just a different approach to storytelling. I think it's calming but people are fair to say they find it boring. In some cases this approach has worked out poorly (like DQVII - which the above poster mentioned). If you think nothing happens in DQXI, just try playing that one. However, I think both XI and VIII do this type of storytelling pretty well.

one thing that might help is not comparing it to persona 5 or nier. it's a completely different beast in terms of pacing, gameplay, music... everything really.

just don't expect a fast-paced action packed experience. it's an old series that maintains its traditional approach to battles and storylines to great results, if you're willing to invest time and patience.

Plot wise it's all nonsense, but the bond between the characters is real. Also the story has yet to become overly complicated. The Disney worlds themselves are flat out boring.

Berseria is surface level edge that ends up subverting edge-pectations as the narrative goes on. I think it plays with edgelord tropes but in a tongue in cheek way where you're in on the joke the whole time.
