Never read IT I think the main explanation is that Derry has a corrosive corrupting effect(Amplifying negative traits, and creating hatred, apathy and aggression) from IT being present. It effects adults worse because of longer exposure and also because Pennywise enjoys the fear of children the most so wants their more "pure" fear. Mostly those with the luxury of being financially secure or who have the luck to have their passion also be a sustainable career. Also not really applicable to things with inelastic demand or essential goods thay only have one supplier. You can't drive yourself to a cheaper hospital when you are on deaths door.
