Cross-Examination ~ Allegro 2004 - The king of the cross-examination themes. It's the perfect blend of dramatic stakes without being too frenetic. Does anyone else have a certain moment you associate with an AA song? For me, I associate this song with the final Luke Atmey testimony.

Simon Keyes - The epitome of obfuscating stupidity, and as such, it's hard to talk about this guy without spoilers. I'm not sure what the writers want you to think of him though. He has a tragic backstory, but it's presented in such a way that I don't think you're meant to feel sorry for him. He also feels like the lesser of evils despite being the mastermind and final confrontation. Either way, he's a worthy opponent for Edgeworth.

The Memoirs of the Clouded Kokoro (G2-2) - To be honest, I was initially a little disappointed when GAA2's first full case was a flashback to right after G1-4. I was hoping for things to move forward, but once we got into the meat of the case, I really got into it. Shamspeare is a great villain, Olive Green is a tragic and sympathetic character, and all hail Quinby Altamont.

Shelly de Killer's Sweating Props That Look Suspiciously Like Him - Whether it's the walkie-talkie or the ice cream cone, it's a clever way to give a sense of expression to an otherwise deadpan, emotionless character. Also, how did Edgeworth not recognize the Shelly logo on his clothes on E2-1?

Moe's Fresh Prince Reference
The Adventure of the Clouded Kokoro (G1-4)
Multiple Witnesses Mechanic
Drew Misham's Paintings

Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Sometimes I wonder what it would've been like if we had gotten the game that the original reveal trailer. It really would've been a versus game! As it stands, it's a fun team-up that I think I appreciate more now that I've played some Layton games. It might have the best soundtrack in the series, too.

Case 1s That Tease Dynamics in the Final Case
The Adventure of the Great Departure (G1-1)

Dee Vasquez - I feel like some people think she's boring, but I have a great appreciation for characters who do deadpan well. She's also the original "awkward silence" character as she creates a number of them by no-selling all of Phoenix's questions. She also instigated Edgeworth's face turn, so she deserves credit for that.

Soseki Natsume
Save Scumming
Kristoph's Demon Hand

Benjamin Woodman - I actually find him fairly fascinating as a character. He uses Trilo to vent his repressed and otherwise inexpressible frustrations. I've seen people talk about how creepy it is for him to pursue Regina, but I don't think he actually cares about her. I think he just uses Trilo to troll Max because he hates him so much. When you ask Benjamin himself, he openly says he doesn't like Regina that much.

I'm not sure I like you wagging your finger at me as though I were some hoser!

The First Turnabout (1-1) - This is a difficult case to judge relative to others in the series because it's so short. Even if you try to get every possible piece of dialogue (and 1-1 puts virtually no effort into its press dialogue because you're technically not supposed to know how to do it yet), it won't run you more than 30 minutes. For such a short case, it's got a lot of great one-liners and zingers.

Ace Attorney Stage Plays
Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth
Search ~ Core 2002
Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney

Great Ace Attorney Character Designs - The GAA team has talked about this. Since GAA is a period piece (even if a historically inaccurate one, but then again, the series exists in a parallel world anyway), they didn't think it'd be appropriate to give them the wacky designs and hairstyles of the main series, which technically take place in the future, even though we're already past the timeline of the original trilogy.

The Herlock Sholmes "Logic and Reasoning Spectacular"

Trucy Wright

The Great Ace Attorney 2 - The first game is the questions arc, and the second game is the answers arc. As a result, GAA2 is full of huge moments as the mysteries are unraveled. Plus, they may have had to cram a ton of stuff into this game if it was originally supposed to be a trilogy but got truncated to two games. The third case in particular is incredible. I have some issues with how the finale is handled, but it's a wild ride overall.

Turnabout Reclaimed (5-6)
Justice for All

Ace Attorney Investigations 2 - The fact that this game was never released in English has spurred me to buy everything Ace Attorney I can to support the series. As a game, it's an improvement over the original in just about every way. They craft a deeply personal story for Edgeworth, and many of the new characters are very well done. I really liked how they set the villains against each other toward the end. It's something we haven't seen from the series before, so it was interesting to follow.

Rayfa Padma Khura'in
The Mood Matrix
The Adventure of the Runaway Room (G1-3)
Athena Cykes

Armie Buff - Ah, good ol' Sarge. I was legitimately surprised when she turned out to be a girl. I loved the interactions between Apollo, Dhurke, and Armie. It was really touching slowly uncovering her backstory and convincing her to come out of hiding. It was a triumph for Apollo as a character, too, because he's not exactly a people person.

Furio Tigre
G2-4's Dance of Deduction
Barok van Zieks
Gregory Edgeworth
Enoch Drebber

Edgeworth's Secret Steel Samurai Fanboyism - It's like someone looked at that throwaway line at the end of 1-3 where Edgeworth tells Powers he's a big fan (which Phoenix assumes is just a lie to be civil) and wondered, "What if he actually was?" It's a hilarious gag because it's so unexpected from someone like him. Edgeworth being utterly offended by the Plumed Princess in Spirit of Justice was great.

The Adventure of the Unspeakable Story (G1-5)
Punished Apollo

Mael Stronghart - This writeup will take exactly...17 seconds to read. Well, maybe not, but I do enjoy that running gag. It does feel pretty obvious early on that he'll eventually become a bad guy, but I thought he was a well done mastermind type of character. I liked all the new animations that accompanied the heel reveal, too.

Tobias Gregson - The man with the bottomless fish and chips, I like how they use him as a foil to Sholmes. I enjoyed his character arc, how he always acted standoffish and hardened toward Ryunosuke and company, but they gradually started to soften him and win him over. And then they killed him. Seriously, it might be the most unexpected death in the series for me aside from Mia.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Phoenix Wright
3-1 Phoenix's Shirt and What It Really Stands For

Yuri Cosmos - It's difficult for a single witness to carry an entire trial day, but Cosmos manages it because he's almost three characters in one. You've got the director of the Cosmos Space Center with an inflated sense of self-importance; you've got the commander of the HAT-1 and HAT-2 missions who genuinely cares for his men; and you've got the guy who's legitimately terrified of the Phantom sabotaging the mission. Peeling back the layers of the Cosmos onion is really fun because of that.

THE MURDER WEAPON WAS UDON DOUGH
Bonny and Betty de Famme
Olive Green
Edgeworth's Cravat
Dahlia's Constipation

The Adventure of the Blossoming Attorney (G2-1) - This is just a fun intro case. They don't try to do too much with it (other than unceremoniously killing off a great villain), and getting to play as Ryutaro is a blast. I also liked how quickly Auchi turned into a complete joke character, just like every other Payne after the first time they lose!

Search ~ Core 2002 - I'm not a huge fan of this one compared to other Core themes. I prefer In the Midst more in terms of JFA investigation themes, and it's also the true Matt Engarde theme in my book! I was kind of stunned to learn people associate Core more with Engarde than In the Midst!

Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney

Nahyuta Sahdmadhi - Say it with me: Let it go, and move on. It's easy to pick the flaws in the character, so let's talk about something I like about him. One of my favorite running gags in Spirit of Justice was Nahyuta's ability to become an expert in a random subject overnight. Him schooling Blackquill on rakugo in 6-4 was legitimately hilarious.

No Game No Life Cornered Remix
Raiten Menimemo
Apollo's Backstories
Phoenix Eating the Bottle of Poison

Wesley Stickler - I shouldn't like this guy, but I kinda do. He's got such an ugly creeper face, but he also has some funny animations. I like the concept of a "man of science" being mesmerized by magic, even when it results in panty snatching. I like that he actually did attempt to stop the crime, even if it wasn't as full of composure as he claims. At the same time, I'm glad he'll never be brought back...!

Shouting "Objection!" into the system's mic
Logic Chess

Angel Starr - You ordered the squid wheels, right? I loved the lunchbox gag, even if it turned out to be an annoyance trying to get the Platinum on Ace Attorney Trilogy because I accidentally missed one my first time through and had to redo 1-5 until I got the right one. I also like that Angel has heterochromia, but as a witness, she's honestly pretty annoying because this part drags on too long. Remember how I said before how difficult it is for a single witness to carry an entire trial day? This is a prime example of how to do it wrong.

Turning It All Around - Who doesn't love a good turnabout? Why would you be playing Ace Attorney if you didn't? I've gotta change my perspective and look at things from a different angle! What would that man do who can turn around any hopeless situation? Turn the chessboard over! Wait, wrong game.

Simon Blackquill
Presenting Your Attorney's Badge to Everyone You Meet
Susato Mikotoba
Spirit of Justice

Manfred von Karma - He's still the single most fearsome opponent in Ace Attorney history in my book. I once counted how many pressed statements von Karma DOESN'T object to on the first trial day, and other than the final Lotta testimony (which he sits out of because he's upset she ruined his perfect plan), there are two. Two. Phoenix needs multiple miracles to even stand a chance of beating von Karma, and taking him down with the metal detector is still an all-time great moment.

Cross-examining Animals

The Herlock Sholmes "Logic and Reasoning Spectacular"

Trucy Wright - As absurd of a concept as Trucy is as a character, I still love her. She's the one bright spot in the sadsack world that is Apollo Justice. Phoenix calls her his light, and she really was the light of that game. I loved what they did with her in 6-2 as the defendant, and her testimony became one of my favorites. We still need a case with a Phoenix/Trucy team-up though (the beginning of 5-5 doesn't count)!

Barok van Zieks - First of all, what a great theme song. Second of all, what a great design. Also, did you know he never breaks more than 17 hallowed chalices in any one trial?

The Updated Autopsy Report - I've seen people suggest that this was a genuine updated autopsy report, but I feel like it's meant to come across as a dirty play by Edgeworth, who saw the potential contradiction of Mia being unable to write Maya's name in blood if she died instantly and closed the loophole, hence the "I'm a sham/you're a sham/this detective's a sham!" choice. I feel like 1-2 did a great job of showing how hard the deck is stacked against the defense, and this is a big reason why.

Daley Vigil/Gossip
Eve Darklaw
Robin Newman

The Mixing Board - This is such a cool piece of evidence. It was pretty fun digging through the songs trying to figure out what's off, even though most of the time it was fairly obvious what you were trying to find. It's certainly better than examining that video tape!

Bonny and Betty de Famme - I think I appreciate them as a duo more and more over time. The twin reveal is one of my favorite silly moments in Spirit of Justice. Bonny also has one of the best animations in the series when she lifts her hat to reveal the bunny except there's no bunny there. Then she looks under the hat with a confused stare before turning back to the camera with that winning smile. So good.

Drew Misham's Paintings - I've never gotten the complaint that they're red herrings. The paintings suggest that Drew follows the goings on of the Wright Anything Agency, and then his backstory explains why he does. I get why people wish there was more to the paintings than that because it's a bit boring, but I still think they were cool.

Case 1s That Tease Dynamics in the Final Case
The Adventure of the Great Departure (G1-1)
Soseki Natsume
Save Scumming

Kristoph's Demon Hand - The last trial day of 4-4 is so dumb. It only has one testimony, and it's this Perceive where the camera's focus automatically starts exactly where you need it to be looking. This is Apollo's one contribution to the climax of the game that bears his name. Dude got such a raw deal.

I'm not sure I like you wagging your finger at me as though I were some hoser!

Ace Attorney Stage Plays

Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth - As a concept, it's a really cool idea, but I just don't think they knew what to do with it quite yet in the first game. AAI1 walked so that AAI2 could fly. Edgeworth is still a great protagonist, but the game has no truly great cases, unfortunately.

Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney
No Game No Life Cornered Remix
Raiten Menimemo

Apollo's Backstories - One of my favorite self-aware lines in Spirit of Justice is when Apollo goes, "I grew up in Khura'in. Did I...never mention that?" Yeah, you'd think it'd have come up in the previous two games...! It's kind of wild how utterly uninteresting Phoenix is compared to...well, every other important character in the series. His childhood trauma was getting accused of stealing 37 bucks.

Phoenix Eating the Bottle of Poison
Shouting "Objection!" into the system's mic
Logic Chess
Phoenix/Edgeworth Ship

The Blue Badger - What a wriggling piece of plywood this thing is. I feel like the Blue Badger is probably overdone as a whole in Ace Attorney, but it feels like that's par for the course with stuff that originated in 1-5. I don't know why the series is so proud of 1-5 that they feel like they had to keep bringing everything back from it multiple times.

Venus
Great Ace Attorney Being Stingy with the Pursuit Theme
Ace Attorney's Standards for Guilt and Innocence
2-3's Murder Physics

Extraterritorial Rights - You'd think the trial would be over once you find a way to revoke Alba's extraterritorial rights, but you'd be wrong. I feel like E1-5 wanted to craft an epic final boss, and while I do largely enjoy it, it goes on way too long. The climax of the case was exposing Shih-na as Calisto Yew, and then the game goes on for hours afterwards. Truly the Trails of Cold Steel II moment of the Ace Attorney series.

Trials & Tribulations
Phoenix and Edgeworth's Dynamic
The Hair Flip
Maya Fey

Godot - What a wild character this guy is. He shouldn't be as likable or compelling as he is because he's not a great prosecutor and his "plan" in 3-5 is insane. Yet Godot is full of charm with his coffee addiction, his illogical metaphors, and his constant belittling of Phoenix, not to mention those goggles. I appreciate how T&T slowly rolls out his story, and having him be Mia's assistant in 3-4 was a clever move because it explains so much of why he is the way he is in a way probably nothing else could have.

Dual Destinies
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

"My client...Matt Engarde is..." - It's one of the great choices in the series, not because it's significant to the story, but because it's intensely personal, both for Phoenix and the player. Your first time through, you can't know what your choice will result in. It's also a really cool understated moment that the Court Record button disappears when Phoenix says, "I can't rely on the evidence to save me," and the game also won't allow you to save.

Protagonist Miles Edgeworth
The Golden Court (L-3)

Spirit of Justice - Dual Destinies had to play it a bit safe in order to reestablish Ace Attorney as a viable series, but once that was accomplished, they were really able to try something new here. Putting Phoenix in Khura'in pushed the character forward in a way that hadn't happened in a while, but then for the game to hand the reins over to Apollo for the finale after Phoenix laid the groundwork was a bold move. I respect the heck out of the writers for doing it.

Rayfa Padma Khura'in - The smartest thing Spirit of Justice did was partner Rayfa with Phoenix for 6-3. If you only ever encountered Rayfa in her courtroom capacity, I feel like she'd be intolerable because I couldn't stand her just based on 6-1. Watching Phoenix slowly win her over was great. It's also probably the best thing they've done with Phoenix as a character since the original trilogy.

Athena Cykes - I appreciate the series introducing a character like Athena because she brings something new to the table with her psychology and the Mood Matrix. I like that they give her a more fiery personality to differentiate her from the other lawyers. However, introducing her also put the series in a tough spot because it's hard to balance tritagonists. Athena got the short end of the stick in Spirit of Justice, unfortunately, but we'll see what they do with her going forward. Also, Courtroom Revolutionnaire is the best theme the series has produced since Dual Destinies.

Furio Tigre
G2-4's Dance of Deduction
Gregory Edgeworth
Enoch Drebber

The Adventure of the Unspeakable Story (G1-5) - This case takes forever to get going. I feel like it might be the longest delay between the start of the case and the committing of the crime. That being said, once we finally get to the trial itself, it gets pretty good. Ashley Graydon is a solid epic case villain, the Skulkin brothers are great comic relief baddies, and the fact that Vilen Borshevik is a jurist was such a brilliant twist that it's a shame nothing else came of it.

Punished Apollo
The Forgotten Turnabout (E2-4)
Ryutaro Naruhodo
Zak Gramarye is a Jerk
Ema Skye

Khura'in - If you thought Japanifornia's standards for guilt and innocence were unreasonable, hoo boy. A country where being a defense attorney makes you complicit in the crime is just crazy enough to work. It makes you wonder how they follow that up in Ace Attorney 7. Do they try to go even crazier or just dial it back to normal? Maybe one day we'll find out!

Eve Darklaw - She's probably my favorite original character from Layton/Ace Attorney. One of my favorite wrinkles is that she brought Layton to Labyrinthia to foil the Storyteller's plans but Phoenix getting there was a total accident. She's also legitimately hilarious in the bonus episodes, which is a nice contrast to how she's serious to a fault in the main game.

Robin Newman

Believe me, any comic relief I may provide is entirely unintentional.

The moment that Not Guilty verdict happened so suddenly I thought Simon was "The Only Sane Man" in the room and was somehow absolutely right about Starbuck, as inconceivable as it seemed.

This reminds me of my own "jumped the shark" experience with Dual Destinies when the Phantom pulls off his mask the first time to reveal Starbuck's face underneath. I was thoroughly confused until they revealed it was just another mask!

Also 1-3 is still one of my favorite cases

Great Ace Attorney Being Stingy with the Pursuit Theme

Ace Attorney's Standards for Guilt and Innocence - On the surface, of course this is ridiculous, but at the same time, the conceit is necessary for the game to work. The system has to be rigged against the defense for maximum drama. That's why I was legitimately stunned when 5-4 ended in a Not Guilty without catching the culprit in the process...until the big twist at the very end. One of the few moments in the entire series to elicit a verbal WHAAAAAAAAAAT from me.

2-3's Murder Physics

Northward: Turnabout Express (Ace Attorney Anime Season 2) - I'll be honest: I remember nothing about this arc aside from the fact that they held a trial on a moving train. I appreciate that they tried to craft a new case for the anime since they needed some filler for season 2 due to only adapting one game as opposed to adapting two games in season 1, but it's not memorable at all. Maybe I just need to rewatch the anime since I did enjoy it.

I set my ATM card's number to "0001" because I'm number one!

Trials & Tribulations
Phoenix and Edgeworth's Dynamic
The Hair Flip
Maya Fey

Dual Destinies - I think I might be the biggest Dual Destinies fan on the board. This isn't an attempt to pat myself on the back. I'm just saying I'm not sure anyone rates the game as highly as I do. 5-2, 5-3, 5-5, and 5-6 are all top 15 caliber cases (actually I guess I'd have to recalibrate this now that we have 10 more cases!), and 5-4 is sneaky good, too. 5-1 is whatever, so it's not like T&T where every case is a hit, but I love it.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Protagonist Miles Edgeworth
The Golden Court (L-3)
Simon Blackquill
Presenting Your Attorney's Badge to Everyone You Meet

Susato Mikotoba - Susato is a delight throughout the entire Great Ace Attorney saga. I like that your sidekick is hyper competent. It reminds me of the few times in the original trilogy when Mia would be channeled and stick around as the sidekick, which was always great. I like that she also has a playful side and her fangirling over Sholmes is fun, too. Oh, and her Serenade theme is fantastic.

Cross-examining Animals
Ladders vs. Stepladders
Damon Gant
Dhurke Sahdmadhi
Psycho-Locks

The Herlock Sholmes "Logic and Reasoning Spectacular"

Turnabout Reclaimed (5-6)
Justice for All
The Mood Matrix
The Adventure of the Runaway Room (G1-3)

Furio Tigre - The best villains are the ones that get Phoenix personally invested in taking them down. Those mainly exist in the epic cases, but Tigre manages to bring that side of him out in 3-3. The concept of Phoenix having an impostor is brilliant, and then they throw the mindscrew at you that he's nothing like Phoenix aside from having the same hairstyle. The cardboard badge is the height of absurdity in a series that relishes in absurdity, and I loved Phoenix's BIGGEST PHONY OF ALL speech when he takes him down since he doesn't normally give "The Reason You Suck" speeches.

G2-4's Dance of Deduction
Gregory Edgeworth
Enoch Drebber
Punished Apollo

The Forgotten Turnabout (E2-4) - I'll say this up front: I don't like Blaise. The crying thing with the goggles is stupid. I think he ultimately winds up being kind of toothless despite his bluster, much like Redd White. The rest of the case is great though. Edgeworth willingly relinquishing his badge in order to protect Kay is a powerful moment, as is Kay regaining her memories after he gives her back her Promise Notebook. I really liked how they used the storeroom to do a bunch of throwbacks to previous cases. That was a nice touch.

Ryutaro Naruhodo

Zak Gramarye is a Jerk - A fantastic webcomic that points out all the terrible stuff Zak Gramarye did during the events of Apollo Justice despite the fact that he's not really presented as a bad guy in the game itself. It really highlights the problems with the writing in that game, but at least you'll be laughing about it!

Ema Skye
Kay Faraday
Spirit Channeling

Polly - A scenario that seems so utterly unbelievable until there was a recent real life story about potentially calling a parrot as a witness! The real star of the Polly cross-examination is Manfred von Karma. In addition to retraining the freakin' parrot to ensure there are no loose ends, he has several fantastic one-liners, including the one that marks the top tier of this ranking topic! In fact, I've always wanted to name my dog Phoenix because of one of his lines, except the dog I adopted a couple years ago was a girl, so I settled for Maya instead.

Presenting Profiles - I am all for as much dialogue as possible when I play Ace Attorney, so when Justice for All added the ability to present profiles, I was thrilled. I'm sad they've abandoned it since the original trilogy, but at the same time, I sort of get it. It's not used in investigations in any meaningful way since they can just give you a prompt to choose a profile when it's necessary.

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Phoenix Wright
3-1 Phoenix's Shirt and What It Really Stands For

THE MURDER WEAPON WAS UDON DOUGH - If there was a moment that epitomized the quote that categorizes this tier, it's this one. 6-4 is ridiculous in many ways, but none moreso than this. I am thankful Revisualizaton exists for this alone.

Olive Green
Edgeworth's Cravat
Dahlia's Constipation
The Fact That Phoenix Once Tipped a Cow
Peace, Love, and Understanding
Klavier Gavin

Ga'ran Sigatar Khura'in - First off, I love the Audience Chamber theme that accompanies her scenes when you meet her in her capacity as queen. As an opponent, she starts off strong because she can basically rewrite the law as she sees fit and essentially declares Dhurke and company Guilty with a wave of her hand. However, the first time the judge decides she can't get away with that, she loses that mystique and she's not really a great opponent anymore afterwards. The final TAKE THAT when you take her down is still satisfying though.

Juror No. 4
Japanifornia

The Great Ace Attorney - I'll assume this is the first game only and not both games in totality. Ranking the first game is hard because the format is so strange. You have two trial-only cases, one case that has no trial at all, and no case with multiple days. Many of the mysteries presented aren't answered until the second game, so it's not self-contained like all the other entries are. It's still a lot of fun though!

Moe's Fresh Prince Reference

The Adventure of the Clouded Kokoro (G1-4) - I think this case kind of epitomizes how strange the entire first game is in general (see above). This is clearly a set-up for its companion case in the second game. You enter the trial day with literally three pieces of evidence in your inventory. One of them is your armband, and another is a map. That being said, I love how they use the Garridebs and Beates as married couple foils. Joan is the worst though.

Multiple Witnesses Mechanic
Case 1s That Tease Dynamics in the Final Case
The Adventure of the Great Departure (G1-1)
Soseki Natsume

Save Scumming - I don't have a problem with save scumming in any game. I save at the beginning of every cross-examination my first time through now. However, my first time through the original game, I would not allow myself to save except when the game prompted me to do so. I actually made it all the way to the final save point in 1-5, but that last segment is so freakin' long that after a few failures I gave up and never looked back on save scumming.

By definition you should be able to give me literally any scenario that's a less dominant victory than what I described if you're point has any merit whatsoever, regardless of whether I agree or not.

a victory where you never lead until the moment you win the game like when Alabama beat UGA in the national championship game a few years ago

although there are plenty of games where the winner doesn't dominate anyway

You say they dominated. A single play deciding the game is as far as you can get from dominating besides, ya know, actually losing.

You can dominate a game without scoring a lot of points. They could've played for another 60 minutes and I'm not sure Clemson would've gotten to 10 points.
