already prepared to be disappointed when neither pachirisu nor emolga win and plusle and minun tie for last place

and yeah it's mainly the typing that sours me on masquerain... and surskit being a bit cuter... oh yeah, and being in a gen with the infinitely more fun to use ninjask and shedinja didn't help either. at least it got pretty hefty buffs in more recent gens so it's a bit more fun to use now. either way i picked vespiquen it's just so cool

brutal group, love most

gen 3 and 4 offerings peak, going surskit here since i sure won't be giving a vote to masquerain lol

also extra shoutout to the pokemon ethereal gates (fangame) bee it is a very good bee (and also so are the forest cocoons in it. their evos suck tho)

I associate splinter cell with stealth more than mgs actually, mgs is... too mgs

seconding zork for text adventure

leaning love plus for dating sims as it feels like the key inspiration for most since then
... clannad for visual novels in general? anything ryukishi's in an odd place, zero escape and danganronpa and ace attorney are pretty much their own entities and... well, when i think of fate now i think gacha

speaking of probably fgo for gacha? possibly granblue. some probably think of genshin too though i definitely don't associate its core gameplay enough to associate it.

actually puyo puyo (or maybe columns) for the puzzle subgenre it's in along with tetris. i feel like i've seen a lot more games take inspiration from it than any other game like it
puzzle bobble also comes to mind and arguably warrants its own classification as a title to associate with its own genre
and arkanoid for breakout clones (unsafe as it is to say that and not breakout it's definitely also the most representative of its archetype. i guess peggle fits in here too)

fighting is pretty hard given the spread of different series these days. guilty gear feels like it's more or less in the middle of all of them now, between all the anime and non-anime fighters, so i guess guilty gear strive's the current answer? sf2 for more retro fighters but it's not what comes to mind to me when i think of fighting games nowadays and i don't think the answer is necessarily any newer sf either

simulation... i don't know. sims 2 for... well, sims-esque simulation games is probably still safe
for city builders, cities skylines is probably the easiest to picture these days compared to any individual simcity game though this may just be me.
this is definitely a controversial take but i'm leaning rollercoaster tycoon 3 for non-city builder tycoon games, since the more recent ports have probably placed it in a more relevant position than its predecessors or contemporary, planet coaster. plus planet coaster definitely has more of its dna than prior ones.
there probably should be one for shop-management sims too given how many of them are but no titles come to mind besides recettear (and it's not recettear lol)
i can't not associate vehicle simulation games with gran turismo (specifically 4 for me since it's the one i played the most). yes forza exists now but still. alternate mentions to assetto corsa and on a different note, flight simulator x.
ace combat 7 or maybe still one of the ps2 ones for arcadey planes
still burnout 3 for arcadey cars
mario kart wii for kart racers even if my favourite is still bomberman kart (8 may be way more successful than it now but the gravity gimmicks separate it too much from any other ones imo, answer could've maybe been sonic transformed but that game kind of fell too far out of relevance)

wrpgs goes to witcher 3 these days and jrpgs... hm.
i feel like the "image" of jrpgs to me is snes-era games with dragon quest-type first-person battle systems and usually fantasy themes, as has been reinforced even in popular indie offerings like undertale (sure deltarune generally contradicts this but still), and partially with others like omori, lisa, jimmy etc., but i don't think it'd necessarily be a dragon quest game (as it generally didn't stick out with its visual style compared to dedicated first-person dungeon crawlers up until they were pretty much at the point of going 3d and its particular battle windows until then were kind of too much a dq-only thing) or non-persona smt (likewise, and more recent examples often feel too close to dungeon crawlers). also it may have been the cause of most of the indie titles further up but the mother series is kind of just too thematically offbeat to fit (and its angled overworld perspective is still a little too out there imo). there are of course plenty of others, like the far east of eden, tenshi no uta, early saga games/final fantasy legend or even the numbered phantasy star titles but there's no way the answer is any of them... so. clearly the answer can only be one thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iPgH_rgVjY
just kidding i'm conceding it's probably something else and more popular like ff7/ffx or dq8/11 or persona 5 or smtv. or a pokemon generation. arguably even stuff like atelier's valid these days given the state of the jrpg scene >_>

also the amazing snk showcase too though

luigi dying in the simon trailer stood out to me more than that ridley moment (and also that sephiroth mario moment) but i'm glad it was included anyway

banjo kazooie was just a redux of k rool so it would've been easily my least hyped moment on here if not for the sheer levels of disgust the steve reveal evoked

i know it's a very hazy and wrong classification but i feel surskit fits best in a spider poll these days due to its association with dewpider (also sure it's "early game" but also "basically impossible to find naturally" in rse). spinarak, joltik are givens but there's also room to fit stuff like maybe skorupi or sizzlipede, and maybe also nincada or even paras

or those extras can fit in a second runoff with the bees and ledyba/burmy/kriketot/snom i hate that i'm suggesting this but there's too many to fit otherwise so welp

also i wish every later gen early bug besides scatterbug wasn't so darn strong compared to the classics and and also so late to evolve now...

anyway tough call between these besides blipbug and venipede which i don't particularly care for, i guess my answer is wurmple though. quite a few of the ones in theoretical later polls are in my top 50 or so mons so that'll be even harder

i voted pokemon but in an absolutely no holds barred sense it'd be mario, if everything remotely associated with characters in their respective franchises that i so much as opened once are counted (like say, smash, or uh, each individual minigame in nintendo land) at 71...

by that method, pokemon is a respectable second at 54 though. would be about 60 with fangames i think...

i'm not certain if this is actually set for next month or not but Wuppo: Breft Festival (Forever) does seem to have a hidden preliminary date set to January 15th. Windjammers 2 is definitely the real multiplayer game of this month, but I'm still very excited to see a wuppo revival, even in a multiplayer realtime worms-esque form. Also Kuukiyomi Online may also be seeing a release this month too, which is neat.

Also planning to pick up The Hundred Year Kingdom, and definitely eventually getting Trinoline Genesis too, probably not straight away though.

Also that other gunvolt-like game (COGEN, that one with rewinding and a sakuraba soundtrack) seems to be releasing the same day. Definitely not up to date on gunvolt proper so i'm not looking to pick that one up but if cogen's good then maybe.

oh yes and hopefully arceus is good too. not committing yet but i'd be lying if i said it didn't have my attention

watching the jp version now

Chicory (not out in Japanese till next year but they actually dedicated a segment to it here. i liked what i saw, i'll have to pick it up...)
Loop Hero (already out duh)
Unpacking (already out duh)
Vivid Knight (roguelike-ish game out on switch today, oddly only in japan and korea despite being on steam worldwide anyway)
Timelie (they also dedicated a proper segment to this too)
DEEEER Simulator (already out duh)
Astroneer (on switch next month)
FILMECHANISM (simple puzzle game with an item resetting gimmick, out on switch and also steam today)
Dungeon Munchies (because they needed at least one game on here that wasn't just included in the highlight reel)
Oritsu Anapoko Gakuen (party-based dungeon crawler with 120 playable characters. very low-spec but honestly looks pretty unique. out today but jp only (duh) also jeez this thing costs a lot)
There Is No Game: Wrong Dimension (already out but now in japan too)
Let's Play: Oink Games (of all the games from the regular indie world to also include here... at least it's not really shovelware)
and they had a much bigger Omori trailer it was very good

petered out a bit by the end and i feel like this is the first time that the jp version had less games than the regular one (i guess it had more putting aside the highlight reel), but it was still pretty good
