NBC News reported Thursday that DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas had asked whether the department was prepared for up to 400,000 people attempting to enter the US in October. That would nearly double the 213,534 migrants Customs and Border Protection (CBP) apprehended at the frontier in July, as well as the 208,887 encountered in August. Those two months marked the first time that more than 200,000 illegal immigrants attempted to cross into the US from Mexico in consecutive months since February and March of 2000. The NBC report, which cited two DHS officials, added that Mayorkas query was not based on intelligence or data, but merely represented a worst-case scenario. US District Judge Emmet Sullivan ruled Sept. 16 that the White House could no longer use the COVID-19 pandemic to justify quick deportations of families under the public health order, known as Title 42. Sullivan wrote in his ruling that in view of the wide availability of testing, vaccines, and other minimization measures, the Court is not convinced that the transmission of COVID-19 during border processing cannot be significantly mitigated. The Biden administration has appealed the ruling, which is set to go into effect at some point Thursday. The report emerged one day after Panamas foreign minister warned in an interview that up to 60,000 migrants many of Haitian origin are passing through the Central American country bound for the US. The report also follow the humanitarian crisis at Del Rio, Texas, where thousands of migrants gathered under a bridge after wading across the Rio Grande. DHS did not immediately respond to requests for comment. --- |

The Google-owned video platform had previously banned over 1 million videos spreading dangerous COVID-19 misinformation. Now, YouTube says it will also remove content that spreads misinformation about vaccine safety, the efficacy of vaccines, and ingredients in vaccines. The platform previously banned misinformation specific to coronavirus vaccines, but now, its policies are being updated to also block misinformation about routine immunizations, like those for measles and Hepatitis B, as well as general false statements about vaccines that are confirmed safe by local health authorities and the World Health Organization (WHO). This change in policy comes as COVID-19 vaccination rates slow in the U.S., about 55% of people are fully vaccinated, but these percentages are larger in countries like Canada and the United Kingdom, which have vaccinated 71% and 67% of people against COVID-19 respectively. But President Biden has pointed to social media platforms as a place where vaccine misinformation spreads. The White House has even enlisted the help of rising superstars like Olivia Rodrigo to encourage Americans to get vaccinated. With these new guidelines, YouTube is following the footsteps of Facebook, which expanded the criteria it uses to take down false vaccine information in February. Twitter also bans the spread of misleading COVID-19 information and labels tweets that might be misleading by using a combination of AI and human efforts. Twitter even suspended Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene after she falsely claimed that vaccines and masks do not reduce the spread of COVID-19. Some examples of content that violates YouTubes new guidelines include videos that claim vaccines cause chronic side-effects like cancer or diabetes; videos that claim vaccines contain devices that can track those who are inoculated; or videos asserting that vaccines are part of a depopulation agenda. If a user posts content that violates these guidelines, YouTube will remove the content and let the uploader know why their video was removed. If its a users first time violating community guidelines, YouTube says that they will likely get a warning with no penalty. If not, the users channel will receive a strike; if a channel gets three strikes in 90 days, the channel is terminated. YouTube will also take down several channels associated with high-profile anti-vaccine figures like Joseph Mercola and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. There are important exceptions to our new guidelines, YouTube wrote in a blog post. Given the importance of public discussion and debate to the scientific process, we will continue to allow content about vaccine policies, new vaccine trials, and historical vaccine successes or failures on YouTube. The platform will also allow users to discuss their personal experiences with vaccines, so long as the content doesnt violate other guidelines but if a channel shows a pattern of promoting vaccine hesitancy, YouTube may remove the content. These guidelines will be enforced starting today, but YouTube wrote that, as with any new policy, it will take time to fully ramp up enforcement. --- |

The actor was speaking in the wake of his libel case against British tabloid The Sun, which characterized Deep as a wife-beater as it related to the treatment of ex-wife Amber Heard. He lost that court case and subsequently did not appear in the third entry in Warner Bros. Fantastic Beasts franchise. The British court ruled in the papers favor, with the judge saying there was substantial evidence including Heards restraining order against Depp to suggest he had been abusive toward her and that she feared for her life. Do I feel safe myself? Yea, I do. Because its important when youre faced with something as mind-bogglingly bewildering, that sort of things hits you from many angles, Depp continued. But the actor said cancel culture as a movement is so far out of hand now that I can promise you that no one is safe. Not one of you. No one out that door. No one is safe, as long as someone is willing to say one sentence. San Sebastian honored Depp with its Donostia Award, a lifetime achievement honor that recognizes outstanding contributions to the film world. Despite that attention from the European festival, Depp argued that one accusation can lead to career ruin, to no more ground, the carpet has been pulled. Its not just me that this has happened to. Its happened to a lot of people. He added, Nobody out there, we dont know what anyone is thinking at any moment. But I believe that no one is safe. But if you are armed with the truth, thats all you need. It doesnt matter if a judgment, per se, has taken some artistic license. Depp also told the festival presser that Hollywood had become too commercial for his cinematic tastes. From my point of view, as someone who does take part in the creation and collaboration of making cinema, how much more formula do we need from the likes of studios? How much more condescension as an audience do we need with regard to, OK folks, were now going to hit you with the whole plot of the story every 20 minutes. I think that Hollywood has grotesquely underestimated the audience, he argued. Depp added that many families were turning to streaming platforms because they could no longer afford a night out for dinner and a movie at the multiplex: So I think the Hollywood movie machine has a few design flaws that theyre just realizing.
