Now, the national uprising for racial justice has led to a push to remove police officers from security positions inside schools. School systems in Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Denver, Portland, Ore., and two districts in the Bay Area have all moved in recent weeks to suspend or phase out ties with police. Jesse Hagopian, a teacher and activist in Seattle, says removing police from schools has been a key demand of the Black Lives Matter movement for years. "The presence of police in schools, I believe, is fueled by a dehumanization of children of color, which suggests that there needs to be a constant surveillance of these children in schools." In the past, parents have largely supported the presence of armed officers in schools, and until recently so have teacher unions. That changed on June 18, when the American Federation of Teachers, one of the country's largest teacher unions, passed a resolution calling for the separation of school safety and policing. "There isn't much evidence indicating that police officers in schools make schools safer," says Dominique Parris of the research organization Child Trends. I'm sure a show set in that period would be much harder to write, since there is so much unknown about it. Also no dragons or Targaryens. Compared to the House of the Dragon show, where they have thousands of pages of information already published, covering most of the Targ history in Westeros. In doing so, the court recounted Daviss significant criminal history and told Davis you still fail to take any responsibility for your actions. The court concluded that, considering your history here, your failure to take any responsibility, the nature of the crime, the fact that it involves a firearm, the Court will sentence you to 15 years . . . , which is the statutory maximum. This is a bit of a gray area. I kind of agree that he gave up his 5th amendment right by choosing to go up and speak at the sentencing, blame the jury for getting it wrong and blame his lawyers for sucking. He didn't have to speak. Judges do give leniency to defendants who show remorse. It can be argued that the judge in this case just denied the defendant that leniency since he was still blaming everyone else, rather than increasing the sentence because of it. I'm not a lawyer though, I don't know, I can see both sides. --- Hello world! |
