So, if they can't do interstellar travel without Spice then how did they find Arrakis in the first place?

They could do it before with machines. Until the Jihad against machines (because evil men started using them to enslave other men) basically everything was done by machines. Now how they managed to get navigators mutated to the point of space travel being possible in such a short time after machines were banned is a good question.

Yes, it's incredibly important.

And honestly there wasn't enough "filler" in the movie. They never properly explain what a Mentat is or why they exist, don't do nearly enough to stress the importance of water on Arrakis, never explain the relationship between lasguns and shields, and never really explain the shields fully at all.

Yeah the recent movie did a terrible job explaining the backstory of the setting and also many character motivations and political plots were trimmed down or removed completely. Feels like it's going for a hero's journey format rather than trying to give a broader view of the setting.

It bothers me that Dune is primarily thought of as sci-fi when the setting has a lot of fantasy and it's more about politics and power than technology or the future. When I think major sci-fi I think of Asimov, Phillip K Dick, etc.

It's just standard face saving. It looks bad to the government if the virus originated in China so it's better to spread a bunch of nonsense so people at least doubt that it originated in China.

There's always going to be both. A society that punishes you for being LGBT will obviously suppress the numbers. If you could be literally killed for coming out, you probably aren't going to. There is a large gap between being killed and no one botering you at all, so depending on where a society is on that scale it's going to influence how many feel comfortable coming out.

I don't have a problem with the casting in the live action but people seem to have assumptions about characters ethnicities when all we know is they come from Chinese linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Everything else is a guess.

This article summarizes a lot of the allegations and shifting government policy:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organ_transplantation_in_China

In December 2005, China's Deputy Health Minister acknowledged that the practice of removing organs from executed prisoners for transplants was widespread.[10] In 2007, China issued regulations banning the commercial trading of organs,[11] and the Chinese Medical Association agreed that the organs of prisoners should not be used for transplantation, except for members of the immediate family of the deceased.[12] In 2008, a liver-transplant registry system was established in Shanghai, along with a nationwide proposal to incorporate information on individual driving permits for those wishing to donate their organs.[13]
Despite these initiatives, China Daily reported in August 2009 that approximately 65% of transplanted organs still came from death row prisoners. The condemned prisoners have been described as "not a proper source for organ transplants" by Vice-Health Minister Huang Jiefu,[14] and in March 2010, he announced the trial of China's first organ donation program starting after death, jointly run by the Red Cross Society and the Ministry of Health, in 10 pilot regions. In 2013, Huang Jiefu altered his position on utilizing prisoners' organs, stating that death row prisoners should be allowed to donate organs and should be integrated into the new computer-based organ allocation system.[15] In 2018 and 2019, media investigations and academic analysis into these allegations increased.[16][17][18]

Uh, so this says they have no proof. They keep using the word "allegations" which does not mean they are guilty of a crime. It's merely an accusation.

As I said before. Regardless of the reason it is incredibly easy to get an organ transplant in China compared to other countries. Rich people fly to China to get them. Where the organs come from is obviously an open question. And we know some of them are black market like the dude who sold his kidney for an iPhone. We also know they used to officially acknowledge harvesting prisoners' organs who are set to be executed until recently, where they claim they no longer do. So the question now is how much the government is or isn't involved in the rampant availability of organ transplants in China for those who can afford them compared to other countries.
