Deltarune Chapter 2 x Claud - Super Monster

Here's the whole album for a change. Super Monster from Claud is basic bedroom pop/lofi indie rock, but it's pretty good! Favorite tracks on here are probably "Ana" and "Guard Down."

This was an easy pairing to make, as Claud's whole aesthetic is very Deltarune Chapter 2, in terms of being open about vulnerability, relationships and identity. Can I just say that I was extremely impressed by DR chapter 2? Probably my second favorite game of the year. I was actually a bit let down that Toby went ahead and did a genocide again. Like the point of Undertale's genocide route is to make you feel awful right? But now people are like... anticipating turning these characters into monsters. I just don't want it to lose its impact, particularly over the next 5 chapters. Which again can't come soon enough, as this game ruled. (Also "A Cyber's World" might be the VGM of the year).

Deathloop x Iceage Seek Shelter

Ah yes, Deathloop. The ever elusive PS5 exclusive developed by Microsoft (Arkane more specifically). The game that people were apparently sick of before it even came out. Full disclosure: I have played Deathloop for a total of two hours. I feel weird talking about it. It's clearly a well-made game and fun enough, but in many ways I feel a bit over it? I committed myself to the 21 bit though, so I'm including it.

I'd rather talk about the Danish punk band Iceage. You probably won't like them. The singer leans heavily into a post-punk/no wave aesthetic that might be characterized as sounding slurry, drunk, and disinterested. I don't think Seek Shelter is their best record. Their earlier stuff was much more aggressive and shouty, which fit the vocal style a bit more. In this record and the last one they try out classic rock. I don't know, I think it's pretty interesting and from what I can tell this kind of "warped classic" aesthetic fits the overall vibe of what Deathloop is going for. If you don't like "Vendetta" I'd recommend "Hurrah" instead for something a bit catchier.

Death's Door x Julien Baker - Little Oblivions

First up is Death's Door, one of the few games I played on Steam this year, before a PS4/5 version was eventually and recently released. I didn't spend a long time with this one, but I enjoyed what I did play of it. It's basically a Zelda roguelike in the vein of Hyper Light Drifter, where you play as a crow shinigami. It's not as good as either of those games. I did ultimately drop it due to the urge to play some other flashier titles.

Meanwhile Julien Baker's Little Oblivions is a solid record in a familiar genre. Like Death's Door, it doesn't necessarily reinvent the wheel so much as provide some interesting spins. The sound of the record is sometimes open and cavernous, while at others it feels quite intimate. Thinking of a little cute reaper crow as a "little oblivion" also kind of makes sense in my weird mind.

Instead of doing a traditional ranking topic, here I'm going to pair 21 video games with 21 albums - all from 2021. My intention here is not to say that these albums make good soundtracks to the games, so much as it is to point out some superficial connections between their general aesthetics/themes.

I'll say at the top that my music taste generally runs on the obscure/indie side, along the lines of what you might see on Consequence of Sound or Pitchfork. I don't mean to be a hipster, honest. I've never told anyone this, but I used to freelance for several now-defunct music sites from 2000-2010, and that taste has carried over. I'm not planning on writing reviews or anything, I'm just explaining why my taste is the way it is.

Note: these are in alphabetical order by video game title, not ranked.

A 3D remake of Chrono Trigger has no chance of being good unless we can get some Arc Systems Works level graphical fidelity onto something like the Dragon Quest XI engine. Anything less and you might as well just play the original, which is still near the pinnacle of 2D sprites/top-down JRPGs

I still think it's pretty good. Weirdly enough it's actually less fun playing it on console than it was on PSP for some reason (maybe because it's way too easy). Story wise, I think it might be fair to say that the plot developments of MGSV actually might retroactively hurt it.
