So there was a lot less need to compete with other men for women's attention because they just weren't around eachother. Men were also super close in a bromance way. There are lots of paintings and early photos of coworking men all close together sitting in each others laps. They didn't think of it as girly or gay because they just didn't need to question that kind of thing.
