State Supreme Court justices on Friday rejected a plan meant to ensure lawsuits over new legislative and congressional district boundaries go to them instead of federal judges.

The court voted to deny a request filed last summer to change state court rules from former Republican Assembly Speaker Scott Jensen and conservative legal firm Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty.

"The court determined that, as drafted, the procedures proposed in this administrative rule petition are unlikely to materially aid this court's consideration of an as yet undefined future redistricting challenge, and voted to deny the petition," the order said.

"Our decision in this rule matter should not be deemed predictive of this court's response to a petition for review asking this court to review a lower court's ruling on a redistricting challenge or a request that we assume original jurisdiction over a future redistricting case or controversy," the justices added.

"It remains well-settled that redistricting challenges often merit this court's exercise of its original jurisdiction."

The request reflected the enormity of the political stakes of the next round of redistricting in a purple state like Wisconsin, recognizing that it is all but certain to be courts and not legislators that have the final say on what legislative and congressional districts look like for the next decade.

Where the lines are drawn plays a major role in determining who controls the Legislature and has an upper hand in the states congressional delegation. Republican lawmakers established maps in 2011 that handed them large majorities in the Statehouse and an advantage in five of the states eight congressional districts.

States are required to draw new legislative and congressional districts before the 2022 elections to account for changes in population. With split control of state government, courts are widely expected to have to decide where to draw Wisconsin's lines.

Rick Esenberg, the institute's president and general counsel, said the petition was filed based on prior remarks from the Court that a rule would be helpful for it in assessing redistricting matters.

The Court has determined the proposed rule is not needed, but has made clear that rejection of the rule does not mean the Court will reject its jurisdictional role with respect to redistricting, Esenberg said in a statement.

Sachin Chheda, director fo the Fair Elections Project, praised the order denying the petition.

"The State Supreme Court has made the right decision in denying the effort to rig the map-drawing process through a ridiculously partisan proposed rule," he said.

Court documents say 40-year-old Francine Bogumil later texted her ex-husband, S---- bout to get ugly.

All this violated several laws, court orders as well as the standards for behavior by a member of the Florida Bar, of which Bogumil has been a member since 2006.

Alexander Bogumil came out of the house to see his ex-wife hurling objects at Endorrsons BMW sedan, shattering the windows. He told Orange County sheriffs deputies after calling 911, he went outside to get between his former wife and Endorsson. He admitted responding to her two slaps to his face with a slap to her face.

Just before police arrived, Endorsson said Francine Bogumil yelled at her, I will kill you, b----!

Her interaction with the arriving Orange County deputies seemed no less belligerent. After a deputy told her to stop shouting at him while he was talking to Alexander Bogumil, she said, No. F--- you! and spat at him, according to the report.

Francine Bogumil posted bond on May 3, 2020, and walked out of jail with the standard no-contact orders in place. And she violated them by May 9, 2020.

Court documents include a November flier Francine Bogumil made and threatened to post at the local Starbucks, Publix and anywhere she could. The flier included a picture of the two kids and a picture of Alexander that called him a potential pedophile on the loose with minors and saying their mother hadnt seen them since May 4.

The ensuing text messages say, And each and every day as my heart bleeds without my kids, your life will become uglier and uglier because this is YOUR choice...you want war, youve got WARI chose peaceyou didnt oblige. You can blame yourself because Im JUST getting started with the ways I can ruin uI WILL f--- up your world up unless you surrender. Im not backing down this time. S---- bout to get ugly.

Bogumil was rearrested on Nov. 25.

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) Authorities in a Virginia suburb of the nation's capital say they are seeking to arrest a man who reportedly left a restaurant without paying, used racial slurs when confronted by two Asian American workers and assaulted one of them.

Arlington County Police said in a news release Saturday that officers were called to the unspecified restaurant earlier in the week for a report of an assault.

Police said the arriving officers determined the suspect had left without paying his bill. Two employees approached him outside the restaurant and asked him to pay, according to police. But the suspect continued walking away, and when one employee began recording him, he pushed the other employee to the ground and ran off, the release said.

Later, as detectives were investigating the incident, they were told the suspect used racial slurs towards the employees. The incident was reported to Virginia State Police as a possible hate crime, according to the news release. The assault victim did not require medical treatment.

The incident comes amid a rise in hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders that has prompted congressional action.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, the national Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, joined police in calling for the public's help in identifying the suspect. Police released a detailed description and clear photos of the suspect.

ST. LOUIS David Barklage, a political consultant and lobbyist whose clients have included several prominent Republicans in state government, has been indicted on a felony tax charge.

The indictment handed up in U.S. District Court in St. Louis on April 28 and unsealed Thursday alleges that Barklage failed to report $443,633 in income from 2012 through 2014. As a result, according to the indictment, he failed to pay $151,843 in taxes.

A statement from the law firm representing Barklage Wampler & Passanise Law Office said Barklage maintains his innocence throughout this process. We look forward to reviewing the Federal Governments evidence regarding Mr. Barklages personal taxes.

An email message seeking comment from Barklage was not returned, and a phone call went unanswered.

Barklage operates the Barklage Company. He previously partnered in another firm with Robert Knodell, another big name in Republican politics who served as GOP Gov. Mike Parsons deputy chief of staff. Last month, Parson named Knodell acting state health director after the resignation of Dr. Randall Williams. Barklage and Knodell LLC dissolved in 2018, according to records on the Missouri Secretary of State's website.
