I think I've read enough that someone might suspect I'd watched the show -- no surprise given it's popularity -- but wouldn't likely accuse me of plagiarizing it.

You know, in some respects, any superhero that was created before 1960 and is still around today is like the survivor of the Snap.

The Shadow, the Phantom, Zorro, Flash Gordon, original Dare Devil/Double Devil, the Spirit, Doc Savage, the Spider, the Green Hornet, the Shield, Spy Smasher, Secret Agent X-9, The Phantom Lady, and dozens upon dozens of other superheroes have fallen into relative obscurity if not complete and total obscurity. Some of them have even fallen into public domain where they're guaranteed never again to be viable stars.

Superman, Batman, Captain America, Human Torch, and Wonder Woman still being around is like them surviving the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs.

read dis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar:_The_Last_Airbender

That doesn't replace conversation.

If you're watching to write a science fiction story, and you've somehow never seen Star Wars, Wikipedia will tell you that Star Wars has magic, Buddhist themes, and sword fights involving magic glow sticks. It won't tell you, "If you don't want your story to be called a rip-off, avoid having a space pirate or cowboy type as your protagonist or protagonist's best friend."

I'm working on a fantasy story involving a female lead, elemental magic, and characters with super strength. It comes to my attention that one or two plot threads in my story might have an overlap with the Airbender universe and I don't want to be accused of plagiarizing something I never watched.

What should I know about the two shows? (Without having to watch 130 combined episodes.) Who are the bad guys? How do "benders" work? Are there limitations to their abilities?

I've read the following:
  • Aang refuses to kill and one episode has him in an intense ethical debate with himself over whether or not he can defeat the bad guys without killing.
  • Korra's personality was controversial. (Though this might be typical internet opposition to having a female protagonist.)
  • The villain from the first series goes insane as a plot-convenient alternative to her dying.
  • The Fire Nation represents an unflattering portrayal of Japan.

Eh, I have no love for my family name. I'd take my wife's surname if it was better than mine. I don't get why family names are such a big deal.

But then I don't like the sound of mine and don't really have a family tree to speak of. I have a father who hated his father, and a grandfather who never mentioned his father.

So, maybe it's different for people who have strong attachments to a family legacy. *shrugs*

Very revealing that criticizing people on the right is "cancel culture."

In lieu of recent history, I don't think it's a stretch to assume cancellation is on the heels of criticism. Unfortunately, that won't be the case this time. The dude deserves to be canceled but won't because Fox News would rather coddle white supremacists than cancel one of them.

I know he's just getting started, but it's been pretty disappointing so far. Trump was made out to be a type of Hitler for keeping Latino/Latina children in cages without proper hygiene and Biden has done nothing to set them free.

It does little good to get rid of a tyrant if you don't systematically go about trying to undo what that tyrant had done.

i wondered this as well.

the other three stories were told from perspectives that benefited the storyteller. i do wonder if he changed / altered a detail (or many) to justify him taking the knife? perhaps he knew who it belonged to and pretended he didn't so he could keep it? we also don't know if he was being truthful about having six children.

I never thought about whether or not the six children were real. I took it for granted that he was being honest by that point in the story.

There's some interesting commentary on the court system; its prejudices and superstitions.

My first thought was there was no way a medium's testimony would be admissible. Then I realized it was the 1600s and they very well may have taken it at face value that the dead was speaking through a holy person.

And then there's the way they dismiss the widow's testimony simply stating that you can't trust a woman. A key witness and her testimony is denied because of prejudice. If there is a true version of what happened, I bet her discarded testimony is the key to it.

The theme of the movie is that people can't tell a story without making themselves the star of it. The bandit/rapist knows he's going to die, so he has nothing to lose from boasting about his exploits -- real or not.

The thing I find interesting is the woodcutter. We learn at the end that he stole the jewel-encrusted knife. So does that mean his version of the story is true -- barring the omission of his theft? Or did he lie to add credibility to his story?

None of the classic disney villains were really that threatening. Like, Maleficent turns into a dragon and then what? Dies immediately? Fire breath blocked by an ordinary shield?

I would have liked for the fight to have gone a little longer, but I feel like she made a good accounting of herself. She did knock the prince from his horse and disarm him of both sword and shield.

Oddly enough, I think the best fight of that era of Disney is Bambi's fight with Ronno. Bambi gets knocked down four times before taking the fight to Ronno. Sheer perseverance.
