The tldr is that I think V and DS are (at least trying to be) rejections of the "lone badass action hero saves/changes the world" trope. It's much more obvious in DS than in MGS, which is a series full of badass action heroes. I mean Snake is literally based on Snake Plissken who is a quintessential 80s action movie hero.
