It's obviously there to make players think strategically, but it doesn't trigger 100% of the time and it doesn't show counters in the enemy scan. So you can think something isn't going to be countered, but it actually is. Like I remember a boss that countered white magic. I healed multiple times that fight with no counters, then bam countered and it screwed me over for that fight. You can deal with a lot of the counters pretty easily, once you know about them though. Normally, I don't mind grinding, but the fact that unlocking new jobs is tied to story progression makes me want to get through things faster. As far as the counters, yeah those do get annoying, but eventually it stops being an issue.
