I think you having a storefront which improves your liquidity drastically changes the calculus. You having that much is plausible. I just don't think it's a good idea for people like moo roof to try the same thing.

Unless he is literally investing in your business not a specific asset class, but that's not what it seems like he is trying to do.

Basically when I take on money it is for the purpose of bigger grading orders being available to me. Grading is dumb and prints money. I can understand if you don't have the numbers in front of you it seems like voodoo though. I pay my bills with the money I get from not grading and then grading comes in and I cackle, more or less.

But I would never be sitting on $30,000 in Pokemon going "oh yeah, best use of my money"

I mean I don't sit on it, it is a business so I use those things to actively make money, those are just assets on hand that have a super, duper proven track record of appreciating if you just kind of wait.

Personally what I think is we simply need judges to not serve lifetime appointments. I think 18 years was thrown out with each presidential term getting 2.

Also given that I would be OK with not needing congress to approve these judges at all under this system. Every term gets 2, move it right along if a president picks a sucky one you pick a non sucky one yourself.

What's your metric on whether or not cards are worth getting graded? Is it just the math between the value of an ungraded card vs the potential value of it being a 9 or 10? Are there other factors too like whether the card is worth more because it's playable or because it's a collector's item? I'd assume graded playables might be less valuable.

There are a lot of metrics, but let me give you an example.

So I will typically grade four types of cards:

  1. NM+ Vintage (I think it will get a 7 or above)
  2. Very minty high end modern
  3. Promo/Limited Run cards
  4. Non NM Vintage (select)
So why vintage that I am confident is 7+? Because there is a huge market for certified near mint or above vintage. You can post a raw card and see 'Near Mint' all day long but most people don't know what that means and their card isn't in great shape. So when I get an old card that looks at the very least good it's always worth it to pay the 20-30 dollars (sometimes more but not really knowledge you need) to get it graded and certified. Now of course the higher the grade the better.

if I have a vintage charizard I will get it graded always because even like a psa 4 charizard is worth a lot more than its raw condition because people are odd and collect all manner of graded charizards.

The great thing about a lot of cards is that psacard.com has a database to let you know all of the cards sold on ebay of a certain grade. So you can get a feel for the market of a card and do the math from there based on your best judgment. It's just a pretty simple formula of:

RAW + 25 < GRADE * .6

So let's take a 80 dollar card. I want to grade it and I think it comes back a 9, it isn't a ten candidate, but I always assume a 9. So thats 105. Let's say a PSA 9 of the card goes for 170. That formula says it is 102 and so it's like "eh" probably wouldn't bother, I'll just sell it for 80 and fund a purchase of something else or hold onto it and see what happens depending.

Now what if it is a 10 candidate? Well a ten is usually at least 2-3 the amount of a 9. But let's just go with 2. So that's 340. So then that upside is pretty big and I'll always send it in because if it comes back a 9 it's not the worst thing. I do .6 multiplier to factor in fees and the time I spend trying to sell it once it comes back along with the fact that my asset is tied up for 6-12 months when that asset could be sold to make me more money and repeating that process.

That formula doesn't really lead me wrong ever as long as I do my research.

But, also, that formula has exceptions. Like I will factor in future proofing. For example limited run promos at the time may not hold up to that formula but there is a proven history of promos jumping in value once they are no longer available, so I am more comfortable sending those in and just letting the chips fall.

Another exception is if the card is high value of like 500+. Then I become less harsh on the formula.

Playables! So generally speaking graded playables don't matter. They are for play, they are worth more, it is kind of whatever. Now that might change over the years because there may be a shortage of very mint playables in the graded community but that wouldn't show itself for like 3+ years normally.

I'm sorry to hear you're having to go through this, but I'm glad that it seems like the best possible (aka "least worst") version of an incredibly painful experience.

Also very interested in your business, that sounds like a lot of fun. Have you made any other topics describing what you do that I could peruse, rather than asking you to retell it all here?

Yeah, doing good overall just trying to live day to day and enjoy life.

I have not really gone into detail exactly so @JayLv100

My business consists of a few parts as it stands now. First I buy modern day cards at a discount directly from distributors and open most of it and grade cards out of that, sell the regular cards bulk to recoup costs upfront, and keep 1-2 boxes sealed for the future. This is what I call the 'for fun' portion of my business and it is the least profitable. Which is fine, I like opening packs so being able for it to not be a cost sink is fine.

Next is buying sealed product to hold onto. This includes elite trainer boxes (google if you don't know), booster boxes, and vintage packs. I buy these things when I think I see them for a good price just to hold onto either as appreciating assets or potentially good trade pieces for things I like.

Next is buying people's binders. So When you buy a binder full of cards you can usually get the whole binder for about 65-70% off market value because you are helping the seller by just taking it off their hands. Which is great because then if I turn around and make a bit of effort to sell the cards one at a time I will usually get about 90% of value. Steady profit with patience and a vision in mind, but also...

Grading. Grading is the great cash cow. Certified cards can go for bonkers prices if you know what to look for. So if a card is very minty (so no damage at all, well centered, no defects) it can be a 9 or a 10 grade which usually increases its value anywhere from 2 times to insane amounts if it is a rare or vintage cards. It costs a fee to get them graded but since I am good at prejudging cards I don't send in things that even have a chance at not being worth the grading cost.

So I send in 100s of cards at a time, get them back, and either directly sell them to people who I know are interested in specific cards or just send them all into an auction website for only a 1-2% more than normal ebay fees and let them handle all of the posting and shipping worries on their end. I literally print money, and I literally always am willing to take on investments/loans for this process because it is like... printing money. All the time. It's amazing. I probably have about 1000 cards right now that I would send in (and this is after sending in several hundred last month) and that would run me about 20,000 which I don't have the cash flow for.

Business is great. New buyers all the time as Pokemon is proven to basically be eternal. Just got to not buy high on certain products but my business model is largely undisturbed by this.

I think she's making a ludicrously selfish and insane decision, mostly for the sake of her child. She's giving up a stable home for her kid with someone doing well enough to care for them both to go off and try to raise him on her own? Nuts.

But her decision, not yours. I just hope you don't feel the need to keep taking care of them financially after she's moved on.

She got her masters in accounting at 20 my ex does not need me to support her. When she lands she is going to be making very, very good money. The kid is going to be okay, he has a very loving mother who had some tough breaks but knows a thing or two about a thing or two. I have no concerns for her, especially since she has clearly been feeling better after we discussed this. She also has a lot of extended family to support her. It's a decision that hurts me a lot but logically speaking she is going to be okay. I hope in time I can be a part of his life once she figures things out but if not... it was really great when it lasted.

But, also, I cry a lot. I found the little guy's favorite city bus toy in my office yesterday and I just cried. I have been talking with friends and sobbing. Yeah just let me know!

I also have access to pretty much every home braves game through my work (great seats) so if you give me enough of a heads up I can probably grab some tickets for a sunday/monday night game if that's more your style. I'd love to meet up with you and make a night of it.

I do like Baseball. Will let you know about a specific date!

While I'm sorry to hear about your fiancee, given how you've talked about her, good on you for framing this in such a positive light. I'm happy to hear that you're doing real well considering where you were a few years ago and wish you the best with everything!

How exactly does having a trading card business work, exactly? There's a lot of competition for that and, well, retailers are no longer carrying them after what's gone on...

I mean... I just came back. You can never really leave this place tbh.

A lot of my business features buying vintage from people and authenticating it for a profit. As for modern sets I don't buy from retail chains - I buy directly from distributors for well below MSRP by buying in bulk. Paying retail prices for new sets is a good way to never make a profit. Only downside is that I have to be careful about cash considerations because grading cards costs me 1000s of dollars by doing it in large amounts even if I get a lot of profit back 12 months later.

My spouse and I have talked about this same conundrum where if I were to ever die or whatever my son would have basically no interaction with her any more and there really wasnt a satisfying conclusion to that discussion.

So I understand where you are coming from.

Her parents live an hour north of Atlanta and we drive up there sometimes. I might finagle a way to stop by next time Im up.

Yeah it is a tough one for sure. I think the short answer is there isn't a satisfying conclusion. I would be more than glad to welcome you to Carrollton, there isn't too much here but I kind of like the sleepy town vibes.

Hey man, wishing you the best with all your future plans.

This place is home for almost everyone who have posted here for so many years, and may we interact or not, we all are family.

Thanks Poka, I appreciate it.

That does sound nice. I'll let you know, probably sometime in July once I settle in to things.

Board 8 Mafia Mafia (may have been version 2) was where you were town, somehow got lynched as bomb even though me as town nailed most of the scum team, and I think you blew up town instead of FFD obvious scum. We won in the end though so it was okay.

Never been a huge fan of beer but perhaps I will take you up on that offer just to say I did something like that once. If I can ever forgive you for Day 1 of Board 8 Mafia Mafia that is. Also my new place is in the same city as the old one, I am going to West Georgia (Go Wolves lol)

I won't keep the impetus for this post a secret: My fianc of two years (and only not married due to wanting to wait for COVID restrictions to fully lift, oops) and I recently called things off. I won't go into all of the details because they are terribly personal, but the biggest issue is that she went through a lot of therapy and soul searching and realized that instead of bisexual, she was gay. She had been fighting this for a long time and recently had been overzealous in trying to make it work. She just... couldn't do it any more.

She has made it clear that her son, not mine biologically but an almost four-year old who calls me 'dad', is a package deal with her. She is ready to move on and leave the past behind her and for reasons I don't care to disclose I understand why she is ready for a fresh start. I wish her well, she was very good to me.

Man, it feels like a very long time since I made a really serious post on here. Was it when my mom passed away? Seven years ago tomorrow, that day is. Maybe I have made one since then, I am not sure. Every time I visit this place I still smile even after all of these years. After all of the fights. After all of the pain and depression I just shoved into here and yet for the most part the board loved me back. Even when I was a giant, horrible dick to people who really did not deserve it. It loved me back. It provided me laughter, a place to grieve, a place to dream of a better me and a better tomorrow. It's where I let everyone know when I had sex for the first time. When I fell in love for the first time. When I was a dad for the first time.

You guys, collectively, have always been in my heart because you took a downright broken teenaged boy and you gave him a place to call home. Some of you have never spoken to me. Some of you wish you never had. But collectively, 'Board 8' has been a home for me longer than any place in the real world to this day. I appreciate that.

For the first time in my life... I get a fresh start now. I am going to terribly miss what I had before, but I can safely say my last partner left me better than when she found me. She taught me a lot about loving myself. About being good to myself. Me three years ago would have had so much more anger about all of this. So let's talk about some great things in my life.

I recently found my faith in God again, through a woman named Grace. Just a random person I started to chat with one evening to pass the time and the more we talked the more my faith stirred. Don't worry, no rebound there or anything she's just a kind woman who while I was with her it kind of clicked about several things in my life. FD will be pleased I believe. God's Grace, FD. Get it? How perfect.

Two, I have my own business with 100% ownership now so that's cool I suppose. To anyone who reads this and may be sweating some bullets don't worry, your investment is safe and sound she didn't steal all my cards or anything. Any of them, actually, although we ran the business together she let me just keep most everything after a small buyout fee. I love my business though, and it gives me the freedom to live anywhere I want and keep a very relaxed schedule and still live comfortably and plan my future. That's a really great feeling. I don't think 16 year old Chris in 2003 could ever even dream of what financial security looks like.

I am going back to school for Psychology. I actually want to put my writing talents to use writing a book about that subject, and my life. I feel I need a proper education in the field to have any sort of authority though but even before dark humor invaded my mind I always thought it would be a very cool concept to write a book about the human mind because I think I've got some neat insight on that. Should be a fun trip.

This place held me together through more shit than I can think of, honestly. There were some nights where I was so close to being someone who was a cautionary tale. But I survived. Sometimes it felt like barely, but I survived.

I don't have a lot of family anymore. Less that I speak with. You lot are more my family than anyone left alive who shares my blood in my estimate, at any rate. The stupid ones, the crazy ones, you're still like family to me. Even when you annoy the shit out of me. I am in pain but at the same time there is a peace that I can't say I expected. I don't have any obligations to anyone at all except to myself and to God for the first time in my life and it feels... really good. A new page in the book of my life.

I just rambled here, probably should have done a summary or something. I move into my new place July 1st, still living with the Ex until then. I suppose I will see if I am still good at that whole bachelor life.

Ask me anything, I suppose.

DNN is one of my 'relatively low risk' stocks that I just buy when it dips and sell covered calls for to buy more. So I bought in originally at like 1.10 in march and when it dipped under 1 I bought a lot more and sold some 3 dollar calls for 1/23. I have mostly stopped day trading because I have been busy with my business instead so I am comfortable with this!

Also I could not care less what any news article says tbh. I don't trust news articles from big sites like that and it doesn't match up with how I feel about it.

Or go back in time and listen to Chris last summer when he told everyone that AMC long term was a great investment when he bought it for 2.50.

AMC is by far my biggest call and I got in on that early. Although I liked the idea of Disney buying out movie chains if it got too cheap I didn't see this exactly coming, but I felt like there was 0 chance a company with the infrastructure of an AMC would lose you money for that cheap.
