I'm relatively on board with all the lore this game introduces - I legit got really excited reading the Spencer letter, constantly telling myself "oh geez this is going to be signed Spencer" until I saw the last page. The direction they appear to be going with Rose is weird for the series but I'm interested to see what that might be like.

But one thing does bug me - if Ethan has been 100% mold since the end of RE7's prologue, why wasn't Eveline able to manipulate him? Seems like he should have been a mind slave the moment he started causing any issues for her. And for that matter, why did he turn out to be such a special case? Did he just happen to be the mold equivalent of Wesker with ridiculous compatibility? Maybe they're saving some of these secrets for Rose to unearth in her own game, but one can't help but wonder.

I really, really enjoyed this game and the only thing that's stopping me from crystalizing deeper thoughts is just how often it completely changes what it's doing. Which is cool, that's a big part of its identity, I think! But this game swings (in order) from RE4 to RE1 to an escape room to an action puzzler to fucking DOOM and then to Call of Duty. Like, holy moly does it bounce around with its gameplay.

It's all very much a part of the structure and clearly super intentional, so my initial thought is that I dig it! It certainly never stops being quality, whatever it is at the given moment. Far "bigger" game than RE7 in pretty much every way, though that may work to its detriment at times.

Once I quit Hardcore and embraced Standard, Im having a ton more fun. Great game so far

I'm done with the first two major thingies and I'm honestly wondering if I should have picked Hardcore from the outset. On Standard, the game is just hurling ammo at me from so many sources that I'm legit having trouble using it all. Very curious if it's tuned more tightly on Hardcore.

Loving it so far, but is there any way to stop the Skip/Photo Mode prompt from popping up during cutscenes? It even shows up constantly when looking around in a scene that allows it and it's really immersion breaking.

I'm 100% on board with this idea. A lot of people have been floating it ever since the genre change for Like a Dragon was announced, actually. Judgment looks and feels like a legit fusion of a kung fu movie and an investigative J-Drama so it's fine IMO for them to pick up that torch.

Similarly, if Ichiban is going to continue as the new lead of the main series then it should adopt, keep and evolve the RPG genre since it's a big part of his character.

On both a promo pic and on the website itself there were briefly mentions of a Steam version, but they were very quickly removed. Wouldn't be surprised to learn they're holding off to announce it alongside a Steam release of the original once Stadia's exclusivity wears out. Not feeling great about any of that happening in time for the initial release, though.

They've been teasing this for a little over a week with little out of context clips, so nothing too shocking.

Judgment is an A+ game though that a lot of Yakuza fans end up sleeping on so go check that out if there's a promotional sale or something.

Launch trailers are always the worst, it's not just a Capcom thing. They almost universally just seem to cram in anything remotely interesting about the game as a last push for sales, actual experience be damned. Though one of the absolute worst offenders recently was Vergil in the DMC5 launch trailer. Like holy shit guys.

6 is a mess and I don't ever want RE going in that direction again... but it's actually pretty damn fun to play! The mechanics are tight and it actually works pretty well as a third person shooter/action game with really fun stuff like quickshots, melee counters, slide turns and Jake's melee system. I may not remember almost anything about Helena's personality but I definitely remember playing her like a WWE fighter and busting out a fucking Hurricanrana on zombies at every opportunity.

The worst part of RE6 are the headache inducing bosses that drag on way too long.

I kind of love these on some level, at least the last one with Leon. I have fond memories of playing through the whole game with some friends and having this exchange:

"Okay, so the rest of the campaign is a boss fight against this guy."

"Oh, we're almost finished?"

"No."

Level design and enemy variety are definitely both big weaknesses for Nioh 1. Thankfully they're both enormously improved in Nioh 2, even if the level design still ends up being a far cry from your typical From offering.

This topic did a good job of reminding me how many obscure spin offs there are out there.

Yeah I've been running through a bunch of "obvious" ones in my head and then realizing they have some ridiculously obscure thing that I've never touched nor have a desire to touch.

Like even DMC has that new Pinnacle of Combat thing in China. My answer might actually be Soulsborne with 5, but I have to figure I could get something higher if I really thought hard.

Do you guys have any kind of threshold where you'll abort a run that's going sufficiently badly? I'm all for pure skilling stuff but I've had multiple runs recently where I get down to the depths with no stat upgrades beyond HP and the game just becomes rough to play at that point.

Feels like I'm back in the saddle after having a tough time adjusting to how the major AB+ unlocks changed the game. Even got my second Hush kill with very little effort! Time to get ready for the next spike. >_>

But yeah purely detrimental unlocks seem really mean. Like the pills especially are enough of a crapshoot as it is without adding even more crap into the pool. Speaking of, though, am I understanding correctly that due to rune shards, it's no longer beneficial to hold back on rune unlocks? Or are they weighted in such a way that grabbing just the good ones is still helpful?

It feels surprisingly excellent to be playing this game again. Don't really know how much credit to give the spit shine with keeping this game as good as it was in my memory but it's great and I'm very glad this version exists both for new people and for keeping this game more permanently accessible.

I think MKX and IJ2 were actually really good in their own right. But MK11 was such a flop to me. I really shouldn't have paid launch price but at least I got to form my own opinion.

I haven't played the more recent NRS games so I'm kind of curious - what was it that changed between X and 11?

The charity sliders were all they really had left, in my eyes. Their bundles have never been the same since the purchase and there are many less expensive places now if all you want are cheap games.

Tbh I'm fine with multiplayer getting dropped. I've had a good amount of fun and plenty of fond memories with it, but some of the more recent games barely accommodated it due to their mechanics. (The Xillia games and Zestiria with >2 players especially.)

I think I'd rather they just not be constrained at all in their game design at this point.

It's a legitimate problem (for people with monitors above 60hz, anyway) since it can cause your game to literally run at double/triple speed, as if you were fast-forwarding a video. Again though, it's easily fixed. You can just open up Nvidia Control Panel or whatever other software and limit the frame rate to 60 fps.

Biggest issue with the PC version appears to be game speed being tied to frame rate, which is a kind of embarrassing problem to ship with but also extremely easily fixed by just externally capping your frame rate. Won't be able to start until tomorrow, but I'm really excited to dive back into this story.

These games kick ass, full stop. They're also really hard to learn just because of how complex and deep their combat systems are. Once you do learn them, there's nothing else like it - it's almost like a Souls game that slowly morphs into a DMC game.

9/9 is JP but it comes out the next day worldwide. Pretty big deal since as of the last game we still had a ~1 year wait for an English release.

How do people who've played these games generally feel about them? "Good but not great" seems to be the vibe I've seen in the past but I honestly don't know how much of that is due to a fan translation being the only way to play them. AAI2 seems to have a much warmer reception but for all I know that translation is much better.

Also I haven't played Spirit of Justice yet so maybe that should be my priority before any of that stuff. >_>

That might cut it for 7 remake and any other big budget jrpg, but this is Tales, man. I want some really weird mini cutscenes after every battle.

In fairness the series still has yet to come remotely close to how Graces did with these in 2010 so I'm not opposed to them trying something different.

That release date is so hard to believe considering we've actually seen almost nothing on this game up to this point, but I don't feel like they'd announce it to be just five months away if they weren't confident.

Crazy it's been such a long time since the last game considering how quickly they used to fire them out. I really hope this game takes full advantage of having all that time to cook and really knocks it out of the park.

Mario 64 in general feels like one of those games with an incredible opening that just gets more bland and tedious as it goes on. Those first few levels are legitimately godly and always get me, though!

Thinking on it Tiny Huge Island is probably the one that I always dread the most.
