I made a comment about a King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard song named Intrasport, and someone told me it was the worst song they'd ever heard in their life. It was probably the most overt criticism I've ever directly heard from someone, and I spent a bit of time evaluating whether I liked the song or the style. Which is silly, of course, but after getting an outsider opinion on what happened, it made me re-evaluate CE's tone.

Like, when Lindsey Ellis was cancelled recently, she put out a video laying out all the claims people used against her. It was an hour and forty minutes long, so there were people who justifiably didn't want to watch the whole thing. But there were people who were invested in something she did called the Rape Rap, and in the video she mentions the full context of it - that as someone who had been raped and who hadn't opened up to anyone about it, the skit was a cathartic and amusing thing that helped her cope with the reality of what she had been through. She also realised that it should never see the light of day, and it was then uploaded against her will 2 or so years after she made it because she didn't know that it had been automatically uploaded to the TGWTG server without her knowledge.

So upon explaining the series of events as relayed in the video, the response became "so she's not taking responsibility for it, then."

I occasionally share some of my favorite things on here, and I make some unexpected but appreciated connections with some users over some of that stuff. But I don't come to CE for good judgement, and I try not to let CE's opinion soak into my own perception. I mean Christ, there are people here who legitimately thought that Rotten Tomatoes was fixing superhero movie scores in favour of Marvel because BvS justifiably got a dogshit score, and at one point might have been calling for a Gamergate-type movement against the site. Why should I let some asswipe from a collective where that sort of horseshit happens throw my musical opinions into disarray? I might as well jump into an open sewer and start eating shit if my judgement's going to be that bad.

I'd love to agree with you, but we need to face the facts and prepare for the worst case scenario. Nobody took Trump seriously until it was too late, and he won the 2016 election. He still has an impassioned audience, shit like qanon is still alive and he spoke at this year's GOP conference with a golden fucking statue of himself to rapturous applause. He didn't even get stripped of his presidential privileges when he got impeached the second time, for inciting a fucking insurrection attempt. He has influence, and he has the means of getting back into power - we need to prepare for the possibility of that happening.

Trump won once, and he can win again. He's already sowing the seeds for his political return. He has an audience who is willing to storm government buildings to get what they want, and some of them are so desperate to have him back that they make up conspiracy theories about Joe Biden stepping down in secret and giving control of the country back to Trump. That base exists, and it got him into power the first time. It can very well get him into power a second time.

All that you accomplish by denying that and saying he doesn't have a chance in hell is that you create a docile environment where placated people who think they're smarter than they are turn up their noses at the problem at hand, and then act like a headless chicken when it comes back around to kick them in the ass. That's 2016 in a nutshell, where everyone was so convinced that a joke like Trump could never become president, and then he was.

You're entitled to your opinion, but I don't think anything good can come out of saying "Trump's finished, he's not coming back, we should stop worrying about it and just relax". Trump is running again in 2024, he has a base of psychos and conspiracy theorists that hasn't fractured apart, and failing to recognise that opens us up to the possibility of another dark horse victory.

My favorite classic is Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits. It's more of a breakup song, but I can't resist the gentle fingerpicked melody and lines like "Juliet said 'oh, it's Romeo!/You nearly gave me a heart attack!'" and "Juliet/when we made love, you used to cry/you said 'I love you like the stars above, I'll love you till I die'". It's a very sharp, witty song in places, and I love the "If you can fall for chains of silver, then you can fall for chains of gold" verse.

When I was yearning over my last crush, I developed a pretty unhealthy reliance on a handful of songs that fed that yearning sort of feeling in me. That crush didn't go so well, and I've been nosediving on and off partially because I haven't been able to process my own feelings on the matter. Sara Bareilles' "1000 Times" is still a good song in relation to that yearning feeling though - like of course, you've gotta realise no-one is going to want you to approach them more than a handful of times - or more than once - about your feelings for them. But for someone in that yearning phase, 1000 Times really captures that feeling of a one-sided affection.

I was sober for three and a half months, then I went to the pub. It was the right call, my other options were enduring the unendurable and lashing out at my friends.

I went through his covers last night, I was on Secondhand Songs and it has a list of every cover he's ever done. Even when I only picked out the ones I thought I'd like, I listened to a lot more misses than hits.

This cover is a good cover. He's got the voice for it, and the poses and movements he does as he sings genuinely add to the melancholy mood of the song.

I'm not here to be like "hey leave the clown alone he's great", though I don't begrudge the other users who are doing so. I'm here to point out how good of a cover this is, whether you like the gimmick or not. And like I said - while I very much enjoy the gimmick in theory, it didn't do a whole lot to endear me to his other covers. This one, hands down, is my favorite Puddles Pity Party song, and if you ask me it's a legitimately good cover of the original song.

Oh shit, I didn't know you were trans! I don't really know what else to say that wouldn't potentially come off as dumb and weird, and I kinda used your post to springboard into another bunch of points about healthcare. Sorry, lol.

But yeah - I think people come to terms with some heavy emotional stuff at younger ages than we give them credit for. I was bullied throughout all of school, and I think I came to terms with the fact that I wasn't liked and that I had no self-worth at like age 10. I figured out the connection between depression as a word and as a feeling when I was 11 or 12. I started thinking about gender and sexuality when I was 14. Some people just know right out of the gate though, and when they go through an unconventional life experience - whether that experience is innate to their body like being transgender or being disabled (which I'm saying separately, not as a correlation), or whether that experience is forced upon them by outside sources like bullying, racism or sexual harassment - they come to terms with the effect it has on them and how it affects them socially, and they understand the degree of care that they need to live stable, fulfilling lives.

If you try to make that care harder for them to obtain, or if you obfuscate the options that they can choose from, you're denying someone a degree of personhood. And the fact is that you, as an outside influence with little to no insight into the condition and no stake in the care they receive outside of ideological opposition, can't justify witholding care from someone on the grounds that you don't understand what they're going through, or that you don't think their condition is legitimate.

Some people know that they're not straight or not cisgender from the moment they can perceive themselves as a person. Other people come to terms with it over time. To deny them therapy and reversible medical care that's as simple as not taking a pill any more, because you don't understand how they feel, is awful. Especially when they have a better idea of what they're going through than you do, and the care that's being denied to them is a non-intrusive way of confirming their condition with a medical professional and allowing them to transition as an adult.

Keep in mind that trans healthcare for minors is comprised of puberty blockers and therapy. The child is given space to express their stated gender in therapy, and they're evaluated by the therapist to see whether they're deserving of gender-affirming surgeries or hormones when they're 18. Puberty blockers are reversible - you stop taking them and puberty progresses as usual - and the therapy is in place to allow a potentially transgender child to have a space to come to terms with their gender identity whether they end up being transgender or not, as well as to monitor their well-being and to judge whether they display the hallmarks of transgenderism.

At no point in that process is any child told "you are the opposite gender, and you should modify your body chemistry to alter your development". Trans healthcare for minors is keeping an eye on them, speaking with them and allowing them to come to terms with their gender identity - to which they may affirm that they're transgender, or come to any number of conclusions about their gender, including that they're ultimately cisgender - and letting them transition when they turn 18 after everyone in the equation is satisfied that their quality of life would be significantly hampered by being forced to live life as their assigned gender at birth.

How is that abusive?

Otherwise, they're like any other kid. They go to school, they make friends and they grow as people as they get older. Healthcare options for transgender children give them the room to come to terms with their gender identity, and if their gender identity is consistent, they transition as adults. Fuck all the scaremongering, there's nothing abusive about giving your child space to assert themselves, support to live healthy, happy lives, and therapy to help process what they're going through and to orient themselves.

He suffered from terrible mental health issues, sure, but I think it's only one aspect of the story. He had been diagnosed with a degenerative brain disease, and it's believed that he killed himself because he didn't want to go through the process of forgetting who he was and becoming a burden.

So he slashed his wrists and hung himself, to ensure that he wouldn't live to see a point where most of his mind was gone, he was a drain on his family and his wellbeing was taken care of by other people.

They still commit crimes with the cameras on, and the police department's just refuse to release the footage. There was a dude who got fired for groping dead women in the morgue and recording it on his phone before showing it to his co-workers, and he got done for it after they caught him doing it through his bodycam.

There is no excuse, and bodycams should come with the strictest code of conduct possible. But the sick, incompetent fucks who get away with murder and other crimes still get away with that shit when there's video evidence, because the department protects them by refusing to release the video evidence.

I think it all comes down to DMCA. If a company finds material which infringes on their copyright - i.e. an unlicensed use of one of their songs, or a promotion of illegal activity that intentionally violates the EULA they mandate for users of their devices and enables piracy which affects their bottom line, they can ask a platform like GameFAQs to take it down under threat of litigation for the users and the platform.

Hosting illegal or illicit content can also affect AdSense, so if GameFAQs is caught hosting something that goes against AdSense's terms of service, this whole website can lose its entire revenue stream. TV Tropes had two major ad scares like that due to perceived NSFW content.

If you want to talk about homebrew or custom firmware or hacking, you need to find a platform that does focus on that sort of thing. This website wants to focus on "legitimate" gaming - anything beyond the word "romhack" is gonna get you moderated, because there's a lot for GameFAQs to lose.

First of all fuck off, Breath of the Wild was a great re-imagining of the open world genre and one of the prettiest and most optimistic post-apocalyptic stories in video games. I understand that people have problems with the game, and those issues are valid, but I disagree that it's mediocre and I adore the sparse atmosphere and the sprawling, entirely explorable world that they give you to explore.

Second of all - gamers accepted mediocrity for a variety of reasons. They accepted a lack of backwards compatibility because companies went "oh no we can't make the games work :( you're just gonna have to buy the remasters and ports :( they have trophies now so you should buy them again :) buy the new ones instead of the stinky old games :)", and if gamers have any legacy to their name, it's nuthugging their favorite companies and slurping up all the diarrhea that gets served to them. It's been happening since the "Console Wars" between Nintendo and Sega at least.

I've been bringing this up a lot lately, but another polarising wedge that was driven into gaming was Gamergate. You can see how bringing ideology into the gaming space affected the quality of the games people championed with Hatred - a game decried as a mass shooting simulator by the left (which, I mean, it was) and which was taken off of Steam, only for the right to rise up and argue against censorship of the game. The game wasn't that good, and it was explicitly a controversial cash grab made by a bunch of shitheads - but the way it was talked about, it was as if it was a vital and necessary and needed part of the gaming space, with its exclusion from Steam being tantamount to political censorship. So the political radicalisation that occurred within the gaming space began to dictate the sort of games that certain sides would prop up and try to take down, regardless of quality.

I still maintain that games like Hatred - especially ones that get that much word of mouth - can absolutely survive being sold independently. Even in a landscape without itch.io, all you need to do is put the game files up on your website and let people access the files once they pay the fee. And you don't even need to pay a cut to Steam, which means you're making more money per sale. But that's a tangent.

But overall, gamers accept mediocrity because that's what they're used to. Companies took an inch here, an inch there - then they began to overreach their boundaries for the purpose of proposing something less controversial that "fixes" the issue they were trying to introduce. They said "we can't make games more user friendly" when what they meant was "we don't want to fuck with our bottom line, which we've padded through methods that make games less fun for you to play". And because people tie their identities to the games they play and the companies that make their favorite games, we let them.

It's the same reason liquor brands are introducing these new colourful characters and narratives to their brands. They tell you the infamous history of Smirnoff, how the recipe escaped Russia during the Russian Revolution and found its way to America in the 1920's - they create characters like James Squire and tell you stories about how he stole hops and barley to make beer, and he got a light sentence because he gave the judge three barrels of ale. They're personalising the brand and tying it into an identity that customers identify with. And they're using that personal investment in the brand to get people to spend more money on it, regardless of the end product.

This is a conscious decision by multi-billion dollar game companies. They take functionality and content away from games, and they play on the consumer's investment in the brand to get away with it. And then when people start catching on, they'll do something ridiculous that everybody hates - and then they'll walk it back, and possibly offer a "solution" that's a half-step towards the original problematic action, but which "fixes" the most egregious aspects of what they were gonna do. And more importantly, they've planted the idea in people's heads, so when they try again later on, less people will resist it because it's been normalised.

The PS3 store is a gonner. They were gonna shut it down in July, along with the PSP and PSvita stores, and gamer backlash prevented this from happening. But the store is going down in the next three years, and this first initial backlash was instrumental in normalising the idea in people's minds. The next time the news comes out that the PS3 store is gonna be shut down, there will be more people who see it as a reasonable action - it's been 20 years, the PS4 and PS5 have been out for over 10 years and nearly 5 years respectively, it's time for the PlayStation 3 to go. We're angry now, but it serves to plant the idea in our mind - hasn't the PlayStation 3 been out for a long time now? Haven't people had enough of playing PlayStation 3 games? If less people use the online infrastructure than the amount of money we use to keep the store alive, aren't we justified in shutting down the online functionality of the store?

The biggest con in gaming, the method that conditions gamers to accept more and more egregious bullshit, is tied to the relationships and identity that people associate with the gaming experience. It can be how much of their identity they throw in with a company like Sony, or it can be their political identity and how it relates to people like them and the issues they champion within the gaming space. People who want to feel like they're chasing out non-gamers and people who objectively want to make their hobby worse by their own inclusion? They champion games like Hatred regardless of whether the game is good or not. People who view companies as benevolent enterprises with their best interests in mind, and sympathise with the company line as those companies add advertisements to the home screens of their new consoles and neuter backwards compatibility to sell ports and remasters of games you've owned multiple times? Who view other companies as rabid vultures trying to attack the Good Guy - and themselves by extension - and who make pointless excuses which paint their favorite company's actions in a good light even if it's only to fatten up their bottom line? They eventually call for the end of online services for older consoles because their relatable buddy Sony said it's time, or they defend publishing monopolies that don't make any sense except to force people to spend money on one company's platform.

The way that people tie their personal identities into the gaming space, and all of the conflict and polarisation that results from people defending their identities by defending their favorite companies or their favorite fan platforms, is the biggest reason why so many gamers will eat horseshit if it's sold the right way.
