I work for the DOT in Minnesota and had a friend present at the incident. In short, protests shouldnt take place on interstates. Even if the DOT rushes to allow for it (like they did here) incidents like this will occur because of barricade and other misunderstandings (as well as true racist/hate incidents). The event was scary as heck, but throwing the book at the guy wouldnt have served justice.

We had another incident recently where a drunk killed someone at a street-blocking protest. Throw the book at that guy.

The interesting thing about Dr. Seuss is that, even though his books are always labeled as "children's books", I appreciate the clever wordplay and the flow of the poetry much more, as an adult.
None of those who have tried to imitate him have really been able to match the quality of his rhyming and storytelling. Even as a kid I could tell that something about his stories was just catchier (not that I could have described what I meant at the time).

Ouch. I feel attacked. Which portion of what I wrote do you disagree with? The "they belong there" statement, maybe?

If it would help to clarify, I believe the Palestinians have a right to be there as well. Both have been wrongly kicked out of the region and mistreated in the past, but both have always maintained some level of presence there. What is important that they find a way to share power (or separate) and coexist given current realities. The responsibility to do so falls upon the group in power: in this case the Israeli government.

I know the suggestion wasn't serious, but forcing the Israelis to move to the Dakotas (or anywhere else) would create yet another group of "losers" in the debate. In that case the Native American Dakota people. Once wars occur and populations are displaced there are always going to be historic wrongs, and most of those wrongs simply can't be corrected in reality. What is important is to grant everyone rights and a voice consistent with agreed-upon human rights in 2021. And that isn't happening now.

Arguments about the past are going to get nowhere, because the history of that particular stretch of land are very tortured and complex. Here's a primer (which obviously includes oversimplifications):

3000 years ago. There was a Jewish/Israeli kingdom. How similar are Jewish people today to the people of this kingdom? I'm no full expert, but I understand that there are still genetic (not to mention religious) consistencies so it's not completely wrong to draw a connection.
2500 years ago. The Jewish kingdom gets destroyed and many of the Jewish people (mostly the upper classes) were intentionally sent into exile in Babylon and elsewhere.
2000 years ago. The Jewish kingdom was starting to be rebuilt, but the Romans came and conquered them. They destroyed their temple and ushered in a new era of repression. Also, Christianity grew out of Judiasm.
1500 years ago. The territory contains a mix of Arabs, Jews, and post-Jewish Christians. However, the Roman emperor converts to Christianity so they are the favored residents of the area (as part of the Byzantines, yes).
1200 years ago. Islam is founded...again in the same general area. Arab Muslim forces capture Jerusalem, although they fight mostly against the Byzantines. In this period the Jews are not at the center of the conflict: they persist somewhat in the background.
1000 years ago. The Crusades begin. These are rather disastrous for the Jews, who were often the ones displaced for the Christian kingdoms that briefly sprang up here and there. As I understand the Jewish population was actually displaced more by the Crusades than by the Muslim conquest.
500 years ago. The displaced Jews were living all over the place in Europe, and anti-Semitism was a real problem (the Inquisition, etc)
100 years ago. Anti-Semitism was coming to a real head in Europe and many Jews moved back to Palestine (as part of the Zionism movement) given that their home-away-from-home in Europe was strongly rejecting them (and WWII was on the horizon) and given that the Ottoman Empire had just been destroyed in WWI.
80 years ago. The Holocaust occurs.
75 years ago. The surviving Jews flee to Palestine to meet up with the Zionists. There is mutual dislike between them and the local Arabs. Conflict quickly breaks out. The West supports the Jews, which was very understandable given the events of the preceding 50 (or 3000) years, who win the short wars and set up a government.

...and then nothing much changed until today, unfortunately. The situation never stabilized.

The point is: it is wrong to say that Jews don't belong in Israel/Palestine/pick your name. They were wronged and kicked out of the land by force over centuries. They have no true home elsewhere. HOWEVER, two wrongs don't make a right. (Or in this case, 12,529 wrongs don't make a right)

The situation today is that the Israelis have the power and they are abusing their power. They are morally responsible to find a true, humane, permanent solution for the Palestinians EVEN IF those Palestinians hate them, attack them, and don't share their religion. To go Spiderman on them, with great power comes great responsibility. Israelis now have that power.

Also bunny girls
You are entitled to your opinion. For my part:
1) I find autobattle boring
2) I find Fran very unappealing: I would be creeped out if such a "person" hung out around me.
3) Lots of recent games have beautiful settings...but not much of interest to do.
4) I didn't hate Vaan and Penelo. I just found them uninteresting, which might be worse.

Not in my memory, no. I'm talking about mass demonstrations where a huge group of people, for example, walks across a border without yelling or violent actions. Or sits quietly in some Jewish portion of Jerusalem. Something big enough that it's disruptive (and catches the media's attention) without being a yelling/screaming/violent event. Ghandi-style stuff. THAT would be their best tactic, and I do not see them trying such things on a large enough scale and consistent enough basis to be effective.

Portions of the west definitely (and increasingly, the further we get from WWII and the longer this stretches out) care, and those elements will have more power to act if they don't appear to be acting in support of terrorism. Is it fair for the Palestinians to have to wait for that? No, but reality isn't fair: it's just reality.

It's disingenuous to pretend that the Palestinians have always (or are currently) acting perfectly: they have their own flaws. They are clearly the wronged party in 2021, though.

Well, yes, they have leadership that they vote for (PLO, Hamas, whatever). Those governments are just as much resistance (and terrorist) organizations as they are governments, which is not particularly surprising given the situation...although the terrorism can't be condoned. There is wide support for the terrorism among the Palestinians: it's incorrect to believe that it's just a few bad actors. Buut...

Ferarri619 posted...
...And you would be okay with your government placing those rockets right by your house and by other innocent people, including children, using all of you as a sacrifice so that government can play victim?
The actions are wrong. There would be better ways for the Palestinians to gain attention for their plight (mass non-violent demonstrations, etc). But focusing on individual actions linked to a broader situation (even if they are terrorist actions) is classic political misdirection. Look how wrong my opponent is: that's terrible! (And while the media is eating this up I'll use the opportunity to repress them further)

In short, Netanyahu is playing victim no less than the Palestinians...and probably more in the grand scheme of things. The Jews were horrific victims in WWII (and plenty of other times in history) but that doesn't give them a permanent right to play the victim card in every situation.

Anyways, to focus on the limited question: would *I* be happy to have rockets fired from near my house? No, but I'm not in a similar situation. It seems that the Palestinians are fed up enough to believe that they all need to be a part of the resistance and accept some casualties. They continue to vote for their leadership. Also, the alternative to firing rockets from urban areas is to fire them from the desert (and be identified/killed immediately without cover). That also does not seem terribly realistic. Again, though: the rocket/response cycle is NOT the problem. The living/political conditions are the problem.

It is wrong to launch rocket attacks on civilian areas and some level response is needed. (That response should NOT be launching bigger bombs back to kill more people, however) Either way, focusing ONLY on responding to rocket attacks ignores the larger issue of why those attacks are occurring. If Israelis ignore that issue indefinitely then, yes, Palestinians are going to continue to be frustrated (despair?) and some of them, yes, will act out. Acting out by killing someone is wrong, but it is predictable human nature in a repressed population.

Putting everything else aside (and there's a lot of "everything else") the only way this ends is if Israel works towards a reasonable solution for the Palestinians. Regardless of how things ended up the way that they are, Israel now has control of both the land and the power. However, they will never have peace, because they are effectively forcing many people to live in random patches of land with limited rights. Even if the Palestinians were 100% at fault for how things have turned out that simply is not a situation that will ever be stable. The history, as "rich" as it is, simply doesn't matter in that equation.

The truth is that Israel has no intention of ever giving Palestinians equal rights in a "one state" solution because if Palestinians had full voting rights Israel's government would be voted out. Demographics strongly favor the Palestinians. But Israel's religious fundamentalists strongly oppose a two-state solution. So: Israel's politicians can talk a good game about Palestinians needing to drop their opposition to Israel's existence etc etc...but it's fake. Israel has shown no willingness to work towards a real solution. They have the power to implement a solution and, if done in good faith, would have the backing of the rest of the world to deal with the Palestinians who didn't accept it. But they have not made a good faith effort in years (or possibly ever, depending on your point of view).

Maybe a new government will come to power there and try someday. Until then, it's unclear why the West would want to continue to ally themselves with a country that is, yes, friendly and relatively powerful in an unfriendly region...but also one of the primary CAUSES that the region continues to be unfriendly. The West owed an enormous debt to Jewish people following WWII, but this is no longer the way to pay that debt back (if it ever was).

Whee...this sounds fun.

What can I add here? Well, first, I agree with everyone who's saying that we shouldn't legislate morality. Religion has it's place, and it's place doesn't involve pushing morality via laws.

Laws should be based on what is good for society. Is prostitution good for society? Well, it's a profession that could support people with few skills...that's good. It carries definite public health risks, so oversight/licensing would definitely be necessary to prevent STD outbreaks/etc...not as good, but not so bad to make it illegal.

Would it have a significantly bad effect on families? Families are indeed a good thing on the whole: they support both kids, aging spouses/parents/etc, extended family such that society does not have to as much as they would otherwise. Would families break apart if, for example, a man didn't feel a need to stay married to continue his sex life? On the contrary, would they stay together better if the man didn't feel the need to leave his wife because of an unfulfilling sex life? Does sole partner sex build stronger relationships?

We could have some good arguments there. Regardless of the specific answers, though, I don't think you'd ever come to the logical conclusion that prostitution needs to be illegal, though. That falls in the "legislated morality" basket of laws.

As for capitalism, it's better than the alternatives...but it can't be unbridled. Society needs to have a space to discuss both minimum and "maximum" living conditions and government needs to tax and provide for that appropriately. We're a million miles away from that, unfortunately.

And increasingly the US media and public wasn't willing to support the costs in dollars and deaths. Eventually the US had to call a spade a spade and admit they were never going to establish a friendly government there unless they held a trillion-dollar gun to the head of the people living there for the rest of time. Which wasn't going to happen.

Fortunately we took all of the lessons that we learned there and applied them to Afghanistan, where..........oh, wait. Well, at least it's not as if the Russians had learned the lesson in Afghanistan in the '80s and we ignored it...

Maybe blowing up someone's country isn't the best way to win their hearts. (Even if you only meant to blow up small parts)

I haven't lost anyone but I have a neighbor who is tempted to believe some of the crazier stuff, i.e. China created the virus and released it intentionally on their own population to attack the US...somehow. I can still talk to him rationally, though.

Really, there are a lot of things coming together now:
1) Nobody remembers WWII anymore, which taught multiple generations of people why we need to get along and be a part of something bigger than ourselves. Few of those people are alive or in leadership positions anymore, though.
2) The internet allows people to believe whatever they want and be affirmed by other like-minded people.
3) All local community-building institutions are declining. Say what you will about religion and it's abuses - I won't disagree - but there are (were?) good things about having common community moral oversight (in the instances where it wasn't being abused).

Can we get out of this loop without another WWII-level catastrophe? I'm not terribly hopeful.
