I always pictured them using Google Earth imagery or something.It uses something like that, but in conjunction with other data sources that are able to give it building heights, traffic, etc. in a fairly accurate way. So the world you're flying around in has 3-d buildings and all the mountains and everything are 3-d, but you can clearly see that it's based on a satellite image and the actual ground itself is photos. I was actually really surprised how good the buildings are. A lot of houses use a generic model (think Monopoly houses) but the vast majority of buildings are approximately the correct shape and size. --- |
