Those "greeters" at wal-mart exist to deter theft with checking receipts which doesn't actually work. All the stores that employed greeters at one point have long since done away with or repurposed them

As far as cashiers go even with automation those cashiers will still be needed to oversee the automatic checkouts. They'll just be relegated to overriding them when they fuck up instead of actually checking people out
