By the time the Allies landed at Normandy the Russians had pretty much pushed the Germans out of the Soviet Union and were in the process of kicking them out of Poland and the Baltic states. In September of 43 when the Allies were landing in Italy the Russians had stomped the Germans at Kursk and were engaged in two of the largest offensives of the war (Smolensk and Lower Dnieper) and smashing through the German lines pretty much at will. While the Allies in November of 42 were landing in Africa the Russians were preparing to launch the offensive that would end up encircling the Germans at Stalingrad. 80 percent of all German military casualties occurred on the Eastern Front. Germany lost 5.5 million soldiers and 1.8 million civilians. That's not to say that the Allies didn't play a part in helping, but the Russians did the vast majority of the work crushing the German war machine. In the early days of the German invasion when Russian troops were surrendering en masse, it was shipments from the Allies of material and supplies that helped keep the USSR in the fight. It was Allied bombers dropping bombs on German cities day and night that hampered Germany's ability to replace their lost equipment, but like it or not the Russians bore the brunt of the attack and suffered the worse for it.
