All of these games are ~90+ review averages or regarded as a classic in some way, certainly all above Super Mario Land, Kirbys Adventure and Super Punch-Out. And there are some I couldve mentioned like Pikmin 3. I would echo the feeling earlier that 1989 doesnt really count.

2016 was their first missed year since then, due to saving games for the release of the Switch. But 1990-2015 was a hell of a run. Some are weaker than others (1999, 2005, 2008-2009), but they always had at least one breakthrough hit or massively acclaimed title per year.

Its certainly better than a handful of RPGS of which some the publisher never bothered to put out in Europe. Xenogears? What is that? Some game that doesnt exist.

Okay, lets get into it.

Travelling back in time creates a parallel timeline. At the end Cap travels back, stays in the other timeline with Peggy presumably until she dies, then as an old man uses the second batch of Pym particles to travel back to his original timeline, which is why hes old at the end. This is fine. Overly convenient? Definitely. It is, however, internally consistent.

Okay, as promised here comes the sap:

I went to a midnight screening of Avengers Endgame (double billed with Infinity War) and it was genuinely unlike anything Ive ever been a part if. Over here loud audience reactions are pretty rare, and that held true through the Infinity War screening, laughs aside. Then we get to Endgame and it was something between a concert and a religious experience. There were cheers and applause at all the right moments, and there was just this incredible sense of community as we all reacted to this story wed been going through together. It was easily the best cinema-going experience Ive ever had.

And that really brings into focus for me what has been lost to film as a result of the pandemic. Cinemas are an incredibly vital part of the arts world, they change how we experience film. Its not just the cinemas themselves either - that experience of being so close to people in a collective event is so precious, and this was the ultimate version of that.

Of course, it helps that the film is also a tremendous artistic achievement. Not only does it tie it all together and offer a satisfying conclusion, it is also a great, twisty action film with some fantastic character work. It is better than Infinity War without a doubt, and while some of my reasons for saying that are better discussed when Infinity War comes up, a big reason is the depth of the character work on display here - it would have been so easy to just have this be about smashy crashy superhero action, but the biggest film ever made dedicates a solid hour just to discussing how the characters are feeling.

Endgame rules, and the time travel is fully internally consistent, even that one thing.

So, as someone who has seen maybe 4 of these movies, and marginally wants to see the best ones but also doesn't want to slog thru the crap, where would I start? What should I skip? I've seen everything in phase 1 except captain America, but I've only ever seen iron man 3 and gaurdians of the galaxy one.

I don't really want to re watch the first phase junk, and there seems to be some littered throughout that aren't great either

Honestly I never wanted Disney to own the X-Men. Not only do they work on their own (and the comics spent years actively trying to jettison them) but Fox found a pretty good niche for superhero movies that have an older target audience and try to do something different. That is now gone. Disney would never make Logan, I dont even know if theyd make Days of Future Past.

Anyway, this movie looks like stupid fun, and the gore looks great. Exactly what you want out of Mortal Kombat. Video game movies have been upgraded to "okay" for a little while and this might continue that trend!

Its not an especially divisive game, it was always well liked and reviewed well. There is however a small group of people who want a very specific type of narrative progression that the game was never designed to have.

The notion that the writing is bad is just silly, its doing a different kind of narrative.
