| TyVulpine 01/28/21 10:37:38 AM #1 | NASA suffered it's greatest loss of life on January 28, 1986 when the Space Shuttle Challenger was destroyed 73 seconds after lift-off due to extremely cold temperatures causing an O-Ring to fail and suffer partial vaporization at Solid Rocket Booster ignition, leading to a leak in the right SRB. This in turn caused hot gasses to enter the SRB and burn up more fuel. The ship's onboard computer tried to compensate by increasing thrust in the left SRB. The right SRB then twisted while still attached to the main fuel cell and collided with the MFC, breaking a hole in the MFC. The gasses were ignited by the engines' fire, and the MFC exploded, obliterating the Shuttle. (The SRBs flew upwards for another 30 seconds before Ground Control decided they posed a risk and remote detonated them). The crew compartment was thrown free of the explosion, and it's believed several of the crew survived the break-up, but the compartment hit the ocean at 200 MPH and suffered near instantaneous stop, causing a G-Force far beyond human survivability. All seven astronauts (including the "First Teacher In Space" Christa McAuliffe) were killed on impact. I was in fourth grade at the time, but we really weren't allowed to watch it.
