War Room is kind of great because it's more Advanced Wars than anyone is realistically going to want to play. The series is probably dead for good, but at least everyone should be able to get their fill thanks to that mode.

Makes me think of Hyrule Warriors' Adventure mode in a way - it's crazy that we're getting a sequel because only the maddest of lads would have even come close to finishing all the maps in the original game.

The first two are straight up some of the best levels in any video game ever. Had a lot of trouble picking a third because all the levels have really great stuff, but picked Reflection for the lasting impact it had.

What a boring show this year! Somewhat to be expected due to COVID but honestly I'm amazed they managed to fill so much air time with so much nothing. Capcom's DMC5 stream contained literally 5 seconds of new Vergil gameplay (15 if you count him standing still) and the RE8 stream had a celebrity playing the game except there was no feed of the screen so it was just him reacting to things.

Honestly I wonder if Kojima would even go back at this point. Even if you remove Konami from the equation completely, I feel like he's well past the point in his life where he wants to work on MGS anymore and would rather do crazy avant garde stuff like Death Stranding, which he wasn't able to do for the decades he was tied up with Metal Gear.

I have absolutely zero faith in Konami these days, and the level of recreation it would require even for just a graphical overhaul from a third party is probably outside the scope of what folks like Bluepoint are accustomed to. If it happened there's almost no way it would stand up to the original or even Twin Snakes in all likelihood.

When I got my SSD, I wanted to do the same thing. I tried about 18 different things and none of them worked. Now the HD is just for Windows and the SSD has all my games.

I'd guess there's very little chance that's a mainline game considering that 7 only just came out this year. Probably some sorta funky spinoff?

I want to believe it's Judgment 2 and they'll be switching off between those two series so they both get decent amounts of dev time. Guess we'll see!

Yeah disk cloning is what you're looking for if you want to do an easy move of the installation to the new drive

Oooh, and I also still have nightmares of going up against my friend's Sensei/Hachi combo. No power boost at all but you can flood the map to a truly absurd degree with those guys.

The major issue Dual Strike has is the level of brokenness of some combinations.

Eagle/Sami comes to mind immediately... 3 attack turns + 30% strength boost for turns 2 and 3 + Fast moving soldiers that can instantly capture anything.

Eagle/Sami is exactly the pair I was thinking of when I typed up my first post about game breaking silliness. Honestly though Sasha/Colin are way up there as well.

Amazon and Google both having the mindset of "if we just throw a ton of money at it, it will work, right?" is precisely why neither of them has enjoyed any real success in the gaming world yet. This is already a far better crack at cloud gaming than Google's utterly misguided attempt with Stadia, but I fully expect it to meet the same fate.

Dual Strike is ridiculously great. It's hard to call it a "perfect" game because some of the stuff you can pull off in it (certain tag combos especially) are flat out game breaking... but the core gameplay, the music, the character design etc are all so good.

The Steam version will almost certainly have 4K capabilities but there were a considerable number of downgrades in the Switch version as far as textures, foliage, lighting and general graphical fidelity that will be represented here as well. This is a port of that specific version of the game and can't avoid having those downgrades, since it was apparently a ground-up rebuilding. Nothing that comes close to ruining the experience as far as I can see, but worth being aware of at least.

That price isn't too crazy considering a typical 1 TB m.2 SSD from a reliable brand retails for ~$180 these days but man do we really need proprietary hardware when all of these things are just tiny PCs in different shells at this point?

I should be dancing in the streets that MGS is finally (properly) coming to PC after being stuck on PS3 for so long but... it's Konami, and the fact that it's specifically the first two gives me this horrible feeling that they trudged up the awful old PC ports and are just going to shove those into Steam for a cash out. I probably shouldn't be worried but I guess it shows how little I think of modern Konami!

Oh yeah lemme throw out another recommend for the recently released Carrion. It bills itself as a "reverse horror game" and absolutely delivers in a short yet extremely satisfying experience... if you're into that sort of thing.

I don't know how any of these are on Switch but:

Shovel Knight (THE indie game success story, basically four separate games in one as others have said, a ludicrous value)

Thumper (Highly stressful but equally fun and mesmerizing rhythm game)

Sayonara Wild Hearts (Palate cleanser for Thumper and life in general - I legit almost cried from the sheer beauty of this one.)

INSIDE (Don't look up anything about this one, just trust me.)

I was going to put Outer Wilds but apparently it's not on Switch. Bummer. If you have any other feasible way to play it for the love of god please do so.

I don't see why they'd buy the studios if not to have them put out Xbox-exclusive content

Microsoft isn't playing the exclusives game anymore - they're focusing on ecosystem, which is what Sony is going to wish it was doing come late this gen.

They likely made this purchase to shut out any of Sony's exclusivity shenanigans, open up new development opportunities and, most importantly, lock in Bethesda's entire library (including Day 1 new releases) for Game Pass.

I wonder how unusual this is really going to be from here on out. The new Nvidia graphics cards rolled out last week to earth-shattering hype in the PC community and those barely scratched double digits at most brick and mortar stores. I think we may just be seeing the result of business increasingly moving online.

It was the best ATB but it was still held back by the turn based menu diving. 7R completely obsoletes it.

I said earlier in the topic that I haven't played FF7R yet, but I have played the demo. Just based on that I'm extremely interested in the combat system - there's some actually really smart stuff going on if they lean into juggling party members as much as I imagine they do.

13's battle system is solid but it's drip fed to you over a truly ridiculous amount of time. By the time you can actually play the game the experience is actually almost over already, which is absurd. It also has general issues of linearity in the crystarium (and the rest of the game lol) and customization, since certain characters are obviously intended for certain roles. (If you try to use Hope as a Sentinel, Fang as a Medic or Sazh... at all, you're severely crippling yourself.)

13-2 is infinitely better since it gives you the whole system pretty much out of the gate, and monster party members expands the interesting combinations you can make in teambuilding a whole crapload.

Shimmy segments are kind of a smart solution to a very real problem IMO, but it did start to get a little goofy how many games towards the end of this gen were using the exact same approach. I'll still take them 100% of the time over loading elevators. Luckily now that SSDs are finally standard, you won't need to worry either of those anymore!

I think there are ways to make turn-based combat more interesting - the Bravely games approach of using "turns" as a resource is pretty clearly a huge step in a positive direction. But generally speaking you'd need to be really creative to overcome how boring and uninvolved they are just by nature. Someone may crack it at some point but it's probably not going to come from a AAA developer at this point. It's way safer for them to use systems that are proven and are already fun without requiring complete reinvention.

So I'm actually a bit curious with all the folks talking about how disappointed they are in the battle system - what do you want to see as the system for a new mainline FF game?

IMO turn-based combat is a relic, with ATB being a barely-passable fork of the approach. Looking at this trailer and seeing summons used as a way of extending your character's moveset and opening up new ways to manipulate enemy state is already probably the most mechanically interesting thing the series has done since FF12 (ignoring FF7R since I haven't played it yet.)

They were both great, I'd say - impressively so considering everyone's probably still saving all their best stuff for TGS next week.

My initial reaction is that I'm not crazy about it. The sprite work was really Disgaea's entire artistic signature, so this is going to feel "off" as mnk put it no matter how good it is. Will probably still be interesting to see them do something different, at least.
