I didnt know Super Mario All-Star on Wii was a thing before this current kerfuffle.

Was it like a Wiiware thing or a full physical release?
Retail.

It honestly had me convinced that Nintendo would never rerelease the original All-Stars except as similar special occasions as a limited rerelease. After all; why sell a compilation of four games when you could sell their NES originals on their own individually?

Them putting it on the SNES Online on Switch was a huge surprise to me, though given what they're pulling with 3D All-Stars and Super Mario Bros. 35, I'm not convinced that they won't also pull SNES All-Stars' availability as well.

Not really. The VC only had the NES versions, so you would pay the equivalent of $5 for each game (and possibly $6 for Lost Levels, since it was an import). So that's around $20 for all four games, compared to the full retail price of All-Stars Wii.

At least 3D All-Stars is a new compilation, albeit a half-baked one.

The Wii rerelease (Wiirelease?) version of All-Stars was a disgrace. A straight port of an SNES game with nothing but I believe a bunch of celebratory artwork added.

I don't know.

I can already play 64 and Galaxy on my Wii U, and these ports are just upscaled versions with very few if any gameplay changes or additions. I no longer have Sunshine so being able to play it again would be neat, but not something worth paying full price for. But the problem is that Nintendo in their infinite wisdom put a time limit on its availability, even on the eShop, so if I DON'T buy it, then I will be SOL.

My theory is it has a lot to do with Japanese workplace culture.

After college, life becomes pretty shit for the average Japanese salaryman. Incredibly long hours, abusive crunch culture, heavy sense of disposability. As one of my favorite examples, many workplaces have a huge social stigma against being the first person to leave the office at the end of the day, which leads to this absurd waiting game of people coming up with excuses to work harder/longer. Then after work, its expected for everyone in the office to go out drinking with the bosses, and the workplace talks continue well into the late night. Then you flop into bed and wake up at the asscrack of dawn to hop on a train with a million other people who look exactly like you to do it again. Repeat this six days a week, at least, for 50 years, then you retire.

This is even reflected in the media itself. Wanna know why there are so few fathers in anime? It ain't cuz they're all dead, this isn't disney. Thats reflective of how little the average japanese kid sees their father.

As a result, high school/teenage years becomes this sort of sacred time, for a lot of people. Old enough to have at least comparable agency/faculties to an adult, but young enough to still have the freedom and optimism for the kind of adventures/hijinks the series are about. Young kids want to be big and strong like the older kids, while adults desperately want to escape back to a time before their very literal wage slavery.

Thus, lots and lots of high school.

Hell, its not even all of high school. Its almost always second year. In other words, as absolutely old as you can get, the apex of your freedom. Because third year is just the start of the shitshow, with school/cram school/college entrance exam prep eating away your entire fucking life.
Yeah, this makes sense. Another reason why Japan is great for a visit, but not for living.

I wonder if things will change there any time soon?
