I was playing pkmn Adventure Red Chapter and they flipped the ice/fighting matchup and it worked very well.

Alder GOAT. Dude is basically a big catcher that somehow became champion. Has to be because of his damn shorts.

Alder Cheren Bianca and N are my favourite characters in Unova.

BW1 are them chasing their ideals and being faced with the truth. BW2 is you seeing how they grew from that and are living their lives.

Alder is a free spirit and straight up doesnt even want to be champion. He just likes to wander and help new trainers. Thats his ideal. Its only after N awakens the dragon that hes faced with the truth that he has a duty to uphold, and comes out of retirement to be head of the league. And then he faces the harsh reality, the truth that he might be a bit washed up and out of practice, and because he didnt take his job seriously, he wasnt able to protect his region. BW2 sees him move on and living a happy retirement teaching young trainers and the Protagonist on the start of their journey. Characters like Iris and Benga have taken the mantle of some of the strongest trainers so he no longer needs to be champion. Hes content with his small yet meaningful life.

Cheren starts bw1 by pursuing strength and basically values strength for strengths sake. Those are his ideals. After continuously losing to the protag and having his views challenged by Alder, he gets frustrated by the reality of the situation, the truth that he probably isnt the strongest and probably wont ever be. Not only that, but even if he was stronger, that it wouldnt mean much. Later he mellows out and accepts that truth, and works to move past it. In BW2 him becoming a gym leader and teacher is a perfect progression of his character, he plans to help young people much like himself realize the truths about the Pokmon world much like he learned from Alder.

Biancas ideal was travelling and experiencing the world alongside Pokmon, so she plans to become a trainer and take on the gym challenge. The truth? She needs to face the facts that shes not a strong trainer at all, and the world is a bit harsher than she anticipated. Basically her dad was right about her in a lot of ways. But she finds meaning in Pokmon and can be beside them regardless of whether or not shes strong, especially because she finds strength in her friends. Her becoming a research assistant in BW2 allows her to remain involved in Pokmon but in a way that doesnt demand her to have strength that she just doesnt have.

Ns ideal is the segregated world he wanted to create, because he thought the truth was that humans were bad for Pokmon. When he gets slapped by Reshirams c*** of truth he realizes that was a sham, lies fed to him by Ghetsis. He disappears to find his own way in life. In BW2 we see him after his soul searching and him realizing the reality of the world through his own eyes, not what Ghetsis curated for him.

theres a fan game I saw about that. Not a R**hack but an actual fan game, I dont know the name but it involves a Pokmon tournament. Also, when in bw1 on the route when you and Cheren meet Alder, and Cheren was frustrated over lacking strength, I thought that was the direction they would be taking

She deserves much more credit, bumped her above Serena.

Shes basically your senior as a trainer and is excited to show you the ropes, gives you helpful hints, etc. She kind of needs to come to terms that you quickly outpace and eclipse her and just leave her in the dust. Apparently playing as a female, Brendan demonstrates this a lot more prominently by basically not taking you super seriously because youre a girl, and are a novice. He eventually acknowledges your strength and apologizes, and didnt mean to be rude. Theyve got a decent endgame team too. But you really need to dig into the subtext to come up with all that, so that takes away some points. Still, May was my first rival and that battle under Cycling Road is one of the harder fights in Emerald

Silver was good for actual interactions, though often it felt like he was doing his own thing. Also, I remember that he felt significantly easier than Blue. A lot better in the remake, at least.

this. Him being overly edgy but also having a terrible team is not a great mix. Also, unlike Blue who brushed off losses, Silver would be like Hmph, I cant believe I lost to a weakling like you!!! I need to get stronger so I can CRUSH you next time!!!! Hes like an annoying fly that just buzzes in at weird times.

that being said I really like Silver, I love his development. One of the best parts of HGSS is post game you talk to Elm and he mentions the Totodile thief and come back to the lab to return the Pokmon, but was told he could keep it, and left with a smile on his face. That and teaming up with him in the Dragons Den postgame. Hes great but a lot of people overhype him because of that character development. Characters can be perfectly good without undergoing huge character changes

Ok list if you move Hau to the the bottom. Though Hugh also belongs close to the top, Barry is slightly too high, Gladion should be higher.

Barry is a healthy mix of friendly+competitive+competent. Hes got a unique quality of basically being ADHD, hes got a solid team and he gets good development after getting clapped at Lake Acuity.

I wish Hugh was a better rival because I love his design and battle music, and his (postgame) team. But hes irrelevant to the plot. I think that was the point though, to have a rival who thinks hes the main character in his own head. If you havent played BW2 in a while, I reccomend you replay and look at Hugh through the lens of being a comic relief character. It fits surprisingly well.

I like Gladion and think hes everyone below him are the weaker rivals, hes definitely on the good side. I just think everyone above is a bit better.

Hau is great, characters like Gladion and Faba will act all tryhard edgy and badass, and then Hau just comes along and points out how ridiculous they are in the best way possible, and just totally embarrasses them. Ive only played the og S/M and but I hear hes more serious in USUM. Hes basically the Team Skull of rivals, in that hes supposed to point out the absurdity of them. Team Skull itself is the ridiculous team but Hau does it by pointing out the edginess in Gladion, and by being all like huh? I lost. What? You thought Id be mad? Weird expectations bro. Love life

hes not, but on a second playthrough of b2 I realized how... non-essential he was. The game even makes fun of him for that in a meta way. Every time team plasma is involved or even when interacting with a gym leader, he starts yelling and proclaiming his intentions of revenge or victory or whatever, and he gets entirely ignored. Hes a character who believes hes the protagonist when really hes just a side character. I also hate that is team is a repeat of Cheren/Bianca, especially when the Unova dex was basically doubled from bw1. Its a shame because I was hyped for him when he was revealed, he has a great cocky+competent rival design but hes very forgettable, and his battle theme is great as well. Its disappointing

you mean Elm, but yea he gets overshadowed. Birch is notable for being a bit of an airhead and getting lost in fieldwork. ORAS highlights this when they repeat the same beginning sequence like 3 extra times of him being chased by a wild Pokmon

Oak in general is only really notable for being the first, and also the most well-respected in canon. Personality-wise hes kind of basic.

Pokemon Reborn and Rejuvenation are a pretty good time, if a touch edgy.

Pokemon Insurgence is neat for the Delta Pokemon, mixes things up pretty nicely.

Also, are the ones listed ITT like RPGMaker games or do I need some sort of DS spoof to play them?

most of the ones talked about are edits/hacks of the existing Pokmon games like FireRed and Emerald

If you're looking for a difficulty hack, Radical Red is the one with the best QoL features (quantity and quality imo). And even if you use em, game can still be difficulty af.

Radical Red is reallllllyyyy tailored towards being ridiculously hard, which can be fun but sometimes you just want something a bit more easygoing. All the UI and QoL enhancements and added mechanics are top-notch, though.

Also, like I said, I cant reccomend Adventure Red Chapter enough! Its based on the manga and the map is totally unique, the event scripting is a technical marvel, and the story is great. Character portraits and the music, among other things adds so much to the atmosphere.

Team Rocket Edition is also great, its basically a side story that runs concurrent to the Pokmon R/B canon. You can steal Pokmon from characters you defeat, and the story and dialogue is out there, but in the best way. Its also a love letter to gen1 specifically, but Ill leave it at that.

I havent played some of the more popular whole-ly original ones like Glazed, Clover or Gaia, but I highly reccomend the above games. Adventures Red Chapter is easily the most impressive and has the most content, but theyre all fantastic. Rocket Edition, Blazing Emerald, Dark Violet and Crystal Clear are all also amazingly polished.

are you supposed to inflate damage/health? Are you supposed to design entirely new attack patterns? Are you supposed to design the same level with fewer enemies? The game is designed a certain way so play it like that.
