There is a lot of media spin that is somehow still unaccountable. There was certainly a lot of reason for coverage on Wednesday. Do I think Trumpers breaking into the Capitol were okay? Heck no. Do I think Trumpers were within their rights to assemble outside the Capitol building to protest what they see as an injustice? Of course. Now the problem is when those civil protesters get painted in the light of the crazies. This happened to Trumpers on Wednesday, and it happened during the BLM protests. Imo, the problem that needs addressed, is the polarizing effect of our mainstream media. In a business that generates revenue based on clicks/views they are rewarded by following the narrative their viewership agrees on. Slap a hooking headline on their and you got some news. The problem is that we as individuals can see a version of the events, rather than a report of the events. Thanks to social media sites we now have people spreading and sharing these "reports". With algorithms based on keeping users scrolling, they feed people content they are more likely to interact with. There is a big problem when depending on the news outlet you choose to read from, you get wildly different retellings of the same event. People can't discuss the facts when they can just find an article that supports whatever "facts" they want to believe in. In certain areas it does beyond just the Internet: it's their friends, their family, their teachers, their community. The original source is the online bull shit peddlers (or the President), but that's not necessarily where people are introduced to this stuff anymore. Sure, there are young adults that spew this stuff, and you're right it is often friends/family/teachers that can lead them to it, but it all originates somewhere. Which I think brings us to the media. An issue is the way media operates, on a business level, clicks = $$$. Polarization is good for them. Spinning everything to be gobbled up by BoomerBook is incentivized. Also, back to my earlier post, we're here posting about politics on a video game forum. We have experience on the internet and use it differently then many social media scrollers. I think we often forget this. The real solution is to somehow deal with the flood of bull shit from disinformation campaigns and invest in education so young people with have the critical thinking skills to resist falling for bull shit. I was just having this conversation with a friend. I think part of the problem is a lot of older folks haven't grown up with the internet. Where lots of younger people, and some older ones, approach information on the internet with a bit more skepticism. Capitol police were out last night with Trumpers marching around and there was little violence. No buildings burned. What about an uneventful march warrants bringing out the National Guard? BLM protests have historically brought with them destruction. EMPHASIS: Not because of the movement or their beliefs, but generally because of instigators in the mob.
