It's not uncommon for a mugger to decide to hurt you if you don't have enough cash or whatever on you. After the first time I got held up, one of the cops told me to keep $40 in my wallet to pacify an aggressor. This was the '90s, though, so I'm sure the price has gone up. In fact it's illegal where I live (though you CAN have Bear Spray). A pocket knife is a versatile tool, as well as typically people will not engage with a knife.
