Huge fan of the first game because of the quirky characters. Thought the second one wasn't nearly as good in many ways. Played and beat Disgaea 5 complete and found the gameplay stellar but the story super bland.

I know it'll be tough to go back to 4 given all the quality of life improvements that 5 introduced, but if 4 captures the magic of the first game in terms of the cast and story I'd be willing to put up with it.

That's a shame. What problems does it run into down the line? Is the story that bad?

It's just... really cliche. The basic premise is "underclass is oppressed by upper class and being a mechanic is banned. Main girl is secret mechanic that gets ousted and has to flee/seek revenge." But then it does the "oh, but maybe they're not all bad, and maybe some of US are bad!" twist that's trying to show that there are shades of grey but in a really flat way. Each faction has some ideology that's obviously critically flawed so we can have that moment where someone explains where they're wrong. It's like Bioshock 1 and 2 put together but written by a grade schooler.

As a metroidvania it isn't bad. Combat is pretty solid, the art style is bright and colorful. There's a reasonable amount of backtracking, although not a ton. The music is forgettable but not bad. It suffers a little bit in terms of level design in that sometimes it can be difficult to know what to do next and there's one particular puzzle tower that goes on for way too long and makes it hard to remember where to go after flipping switches.

The only real downside is that every single character is aggressively unlikable and the story is hilariously one-dimensional but trying SO HARD to be deep. If you're the type of person to mash through dialogue then you'll probably enjoy it, but if you want to actually know what's going on you'll find yourself hating everybody and their causes and having no motivation to continue.

Okay, heres a witness report from 6 days ago:
https://www.theolympian.com/news/local/crime/article245485220.html
Chad Smith and Chase Cutler, who were working on cars nearby Thursday, said an unmarked SUV had been parked on School Street for a while when that SUV and another converged on a man in a vehicle at the apartment complex. Smith and Cutler moved onto a grassy area about 50 yards away to watch what was happening.

The man got out of his vehicle and began to fire what they believe was an assault rifle at the SUVs. They said they heard 40 or 50 shots, then officers returned fire, hitting the man.

It reminded me of a video game, Cutler said.

From the paper:
In documenting displacement caused by the U.S. post-9/11 wars, we are not suggesting the U.S. government or the United States as a country is solely responsible for the displacement. Causation is never so simple. Causation always involves a multiplicity of combatants and other powerful actors, centuries of history, and large-scale political, economic, and social forces. Even in the simplest of cases, conditions of pre-existing poverty, environmental change, prior wars, and other forms of violence shape who is displaced and who is not.

For some reason the article quotes paragraphs around it, but skips this one.

For example, they count displaced people in Pakistan from them fighting the Taliban because that's where they fled when the US fought them in Afghanistan, even though they've been providing support TO Pakistan:
After Taliban and Al Qaeda fighters fled Afghanistan into northwest Pakistan following the 2001 U.S.-led invasion, a single, interconnected war has been fought on both sides of the border. The U.S. government has participated in the war on the Pakistani side of the border with drone and air strikes, aerial surveillance, and financial backing for the Pakistani military.

They also count refugees from Saudi Arabia fleeing Yemen because the US sells them weapons, and even though it acknowledges that a coalition of European countries also participated, the count is entirely put on the US. In addition, it counts people fleeing in Somalia due to drought and famine because it happened in parallel to fighting Al Qaeda, It counts all the people fleeing the Philippines while also saying the extent of US involvement "is unknown", it counts all the Libyan refugees after the arab spring happened and Gaddafi was killed. It literally blames the US for african Libyans fleeing after arab libyans got racist against them.

Buried at the end is also a quiet note that of said 37 Million (no idea where the TC got 59 million), 25 million have returned home and the duration of their displacement isn't considered.

But hey, this random site is rated by media bias fact check as often using strongly loaded terminology. So I'm sure there's no agenda in these little omissions.

lol you got me.

I'm talking in the social sciences sense:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rational_choice_theory#Rational_Choice_Theory_in_Politics

"Rational" basically means they can behave in a predictable manner if their desires or preferences are known based on some level of cost/benefit analysis. A dictator or a tyrant can still be a rational actor even if their actions are horrible, because said horrible actions make utilitarian sense to the dictator.

In this case, India and China both have leaders with pretty transparent goals and you can evaluate the likelihood of them doing certain actions based on whether those actions are going to benefit or hurt their chances of achieving those goals.

But I'm sure you knew all that already.

Yeah, don't underestimate even a small regional nuclear conflict. That could still screw up the world's climate for decades.

India has been having small regional conflicts with Pakistan for decades. China has been having small regional conflicts with its neighbors in the South China sea. Russia literally just took a piece of Europe not long ago. The situation is different if you're dealing with a theocratic nation, but we're talking about countries with rational actors as leaders. It's reasonable to assume that they're not going to go to nuclear war over a few miles of land with no significant value.

Jesus christ, I hope this doesn't blow up into another world war.

It won't. That region, while it has some strategic value, isn't filled with some sort of valuable resource or religious significance. This is just two major Nations having a pissing contest over a useless chunk of land because neither of them wants to be seen as backing down. India has a super nationalist government right now that gets brownie points for being protectionist, and China is continuing their quiet expansion of their borders pretending like imaginary lines they drew up themselves have always been true. They're just not used to people actually pushing back.

Even if you start to see real shots fired, the rest of the international community is going to very quickly line up behind India and a will negotiate some sort of half-assed agreement that'll keep things peaceful for another few years while they each individually build up their side of the line with roads and bases.

The original intent was to provide students from marginalized communities a space that allowed for them to exist freely without having to normalize their lives and experiences, while also providing students that do not identify as persons of color the opportunity to deepen their understanding of race and racism without harming or relying on students of color to educate them.

This stuff is super regressive. Is anybody really okay with saying that there's two spaces, one for people of color to be themselves, and another for white people to better understand racism? Does anyone on the planet actually think that's a good idea?
