TopicWhat's the point of using a delegate
Sahuagin
12/19/20 1:23:29 PM
#3
Depends what you mean.

Before lambda syntax, there were "anonymous functions", which looked like this: delegate (int x) { return x; }

which is basically equivalent to: x => x or (int x) => x

but there are also named function signatures. so instead of Func<Action, Action<string>, Action> you can have a line like this:

delegate Action MyFancySignature(Action action, Action<string> otherAction);

and then define a reference variable:

MyFancySignature something = GetSomething();

but generally it's suggested to use Func and Action instead.

(note also that Func and Action are themselves defined this way IIRC:
public delegate T Func<T>();
public delegate TOut Func<TIn, TOut>(TIn in);
public delegate void Action();
public delegate void Action<T>(T first);
// etc... (slightly more complicated with covariance/contravariance)

one exception is when using out parameters, which can't be defined using Func and Action.

For example, to capture the signature of TryParse methods, you need something like this:

public delegate bool TryParser<T>(string str, out T value);

And then, for your question, it depends too what you're calling a "delegate". A "delegate" really is basically sort of a "managed function pointer". it's an invisible object that manages a reference to a function/method.

When you say MyFancySignature something = this.SomeMethod; it implicitly means something more like MyFancySignature something = new MyFancySignature(this.SomeMethod); creating a new object (a delegate) that behind the scenes manages (I presume) a pointer to a method. this is the same kind of object that is made when you write an anonymous function, so I guess that's why they used the keyword delegate for the original anonymous functions.

it's not really that weird, maybe even normal, but cheddar cheese + tomatoes is a really good combination.

i guess that's basically already the basis of most pizza, a lot of italian food in general, cheese burgers, and other things, but specifically cheddar cheese with specifically tomatoes (not a sauce). basically, try putting canned or fresh tomatoes on macaroni and cheese (or spaghetti and cheese).

wireless has, I think, a slightly noticeable delay. something like 50ms. it doesn't matter if you're listening to music (since there's nothing to be out of sync with), but it's annoying if you try watching a video. not 100% sure it's not just in my head though.

we had one as a kid, but I haven't seen or used one in a long time. I don't think I was aware of whether it was faster or not than the stove, but it makes sense, but then as far as I know, microwaving it is even faster anyway, which is how I do it. you can cook pasta or make jello or whatever pretty fast just using a microwave to boil the water. (it is a bit hard to get the container out though due to the temperature. a kettle would win in terms of safety for sure).

you find a perfect parking spot in front of every location and business you've ever gone to?
I find adequate ones, yes. do we count walking a few dozen feet in a parking lot as crossing a crosswalk? a crosswalk is a very specific thing.

and the ones I think we're talking about in this thread are the "middle of the road" ones, where your presence is actually interrupting the flow of traffic, and at a designated point in the road. technically traffic lights have crosswalks but don't have the same "are they gonna stop for me or not?" "walk-of-faith" issue.

using a crosswalk to cross a road through relatively busy traffic is not something I've done in many decades. it is something I did regularly before I owned a car. at the time I probably trusted cars more than I would now, which is why I can't really answer accurately, since at my current level of life experience, I haven't been in that situation.

related to this, one car accident I was in was caused by a pedestrian using a crosswalk without looking. lady with a baby carriage just walks right into the crosswalk with her friend without looking, during busy traffic and with slushy slippery road conditions. I was just barely able to stop in time, but the guy in the lane on my left only managed to stop by banging up against the side of my car. the pedestrian then gave us dirty looks and kept going, despite coming very close to being hit.

I always remember they had a billboard-ish sign up near here saying "25% of all fatal accidents involve speeding", which to me said the opposite of what they wanted, considering that would mean that 75% of fatal accidents have nothing to do with speeding.

they soon replaced it with one that said something like "going 10% over the speed limit increases risk of an accident by X%" (sorry I don't know that number, but I think it was between 60-90%; it was written in small font and took so long to read that I was passing the sign by the time I got to the end. I don't think I ever managed to clearly read the whole thing, despite passing it maybe 100 times.)

these days that sign no longer exists.

Other than that..,. VICTORY - I tend to find the hardest possible games so I can dominate them - while I can do this single player I also enjoy this for competitive multiplayer, but typically I don't like "team" games for this same reason.
k that makes sense. I like getting rare achievements but not to go out of my way to get them.

I like a game to be hard, if first it's good. generally, the better a game is (ie: it's mechanics are), the more you can crank up the difficulty and have the game hold together. (and crappy games fall apart right away when they get a little hard.)

usually I prefer a relaxing go-at-your-own-pace game. it can be stressful at times, but should usually only be stressful if you specifically choose to go somewhere or do something dangerous. minecraft, TES games, etc.; "open-world" games tend to be this way. 4x games also. I don't really like to start a game out hard; if it's good then the difficulty can slowly be turned up as I get better at it slowly over time.

something like the one side brake line is pushing but the other isn't? I had an issue where one of the pins was distorted and didn't slide properly resulting in uneven brake pad wear, but still it was only like 1mm difference by the time the pad was worn. if it's that uneven, it's almost like the bottom side isn't pushing at all. but I have no idea, not an expert. there are some minor exceptions like walking less than a block in a residential area with no sidewalks.

there's only the one really major exception that I can think of where I actually walked a good number of blocks to the store and back with family and friends, but it didn't really involve any crosswalks, or at least none that crossed in the middle of a roadway.

I have to go back decades to think of a time when I would have used a real crosswalk regularly. (if we count traffic lights, then there would have been one I guess on the walk to and from classes at the university).

there's a boss in the SNES road runner game (IIRC it's the second boss). hard to explain, but there are weak points and a big U shaped area with a giant ball rolling through it. if you try to dodge the ball and only attack when it's safe, it seems basically impossible. eventually I figured out that if you just ignore the damage you take, you can just peck the weak points one by one and win before you run out of health.

"exoplanets" are found by watching them pass in front of their stars regularly. stuff that exists deep in our own system is hard(er) to find because it's not illuminated or contrasted by anything. (there's a huge amount of stuff in the kuiper belt and beyond but it's hard to see).

thinking about it, it reminds me of a campfire at night. if you look inward at the campfire, objects between you and the fire appear almost as black silhouettes, illuminated from behind. looking outward from the campfire, nearby objects are brightly illuminated, but the campfire only goes so far, and very distant objects are still lost in the darkness.

I know what you mean, and I used to hate winter and have tons of USA-jealousy over their better weather.

but, these days I kind of like winter. (maybe minus extreme cold). it makes you feel cozy when in doors, it makes the outside calm. and there's nothing like the experience of a night-time blizzard; it's like being on a different planet.

though it may also be because these days summer is super stressful for me, whereas the winter months are relaxing and I can actually get the most work done. (and it used to be the other way around; I used to work outside 6 hours a night 364 days a year, so yeah, those days I *really* hated snow).

I think I still have a bit of "seasonal affective disorder", where I tend to have more depression in winter months, and tend to feel less depressed from warm summer sunshine, but I definitely appreciate winter a lot more than I used to now.

also, it can look really nice as well

in an office you have computers and color printers, so your high-end documents don't need to be literally drawn with color by hand. I didn't really mean high-end office work, I mean "office supplies". pens, pencils, staplers, etc. are all super common, but color in general seems not to be used enough. even when you do come across things that have colors, like highlighters, there's still only a few shades.

there are also issues of color-blindness, where color can be used to convey information, but that only works until someone can't see the color. (I knew a guy who had zero color vision, no cones at all. that is pretty lousy.)

what I'm referring to here is the general act of drawing color. I don't think it should be seen as something extra.

for example, drawing the color orange. everyone should be able to draw the color orange whenever they want to. it should be ubiquitous. as common as finding a pen or pencil. same with other colors like pink, purple, light blue, yellow, brown, blue, magenta, lighter and darker greens, etc.

except for the color blindness issue, it's like a functional piece of language is missing. the act of writing color to convey information is seen as a novelty rather than the useful tool that it is.

I don't even really mean for art necessarily, but that's a fine use also.

It's like, the ability to draw color seems underrated. There's an entire means of conveying information there that you don't even have access to unless you specifically obtain colored writing utensils. It should be a standard part of office equipment or something. It's treated as something you only do for fun, or casually/for-kids, rather than a serious part of recording information.
