#40 - Mario Golf (GBC, 1999)

In this iteration of Mario Golf, you play as some no-name recruit to a golf academy. You begin taking lessons on how to use approach shots, power shots, and learn the mechanics of the game slowly and steadily. Taking these lessons grants you experience points that you can then use to boost your skills, just like Advance Tour (AT was functionally just a remake of this game, remember).

Once you have more stats, you can then choose to start entering tournaments, or challenging the club pros to a 1 on 1 match. In between all these main events are little side areas with crazy win conditions. You can stumble upon a course that has become completely overgrown and combines two holes into one, and you have to try and navigate this oversized hole full of only rough and deep rough and still make par. There is a Par 3 course that makes you hit all the greens and sink every putt to win. There is a club maker that can create new equipment for you to better fit your playstyles.

Win all the tourneys and beat all the pros, and youll eventually get to challenge the man himself: Mario. All said, this game was way ahead of its time. The story isnt anything to write home about, but its still kinda crazy to think that 90s Nintendo had the guts to try something like this, when their only previous golf game was just a sit down and play barebones experience with 3 whole courses. I bought this when it came out on 3DS Virtual Console and played through it all again, and it still holds up as a fantastic golf game experience. As the resident golf expert, I recommend this game whole-heartedly.

I think this chapter might've blown up my wild theory about the cases being linked. I'm legit confused if that is important or not. Nagito comes out and basically says it was in this chapter and points out the links between the cases after he gets the "late game spoilers" folder. So...is something going on? But then what is the connection between 1-4 and 2-4?

The only thing I can think of is Sakura sacrificed herself for the good of the group, and that kind of parallels here too? Both Gundham and Nekomaru squared off because otherwise the rest of the group was going to starve to death? Does that count? Am I stretching it too far?

If I was still going with my parallel case theory, chapter 6 would be the wrap up case against the big boss and chapter 5 would be...the short case that sort of sets that up? I have no idea how to even parallel chapter 5 here. Also I can't tell if I'm some sort of genius or if you are all laughing at me because I've devolved into full PEPE SILVA territory here trying to figure out something that isn't even a thing.

We will have things to say about this, but not yet. Keep up the conspiracies, though, they're great.

I actually grew to like Gundham quite a bit and his death ended up being one of the rougher in the game for me. RIP crazy hamster man.
This trial hits really hard for a lot of people. I've watched my fair share of LP's of this game, and a handful of them have ended up in full-blown tears by the end of his execution. That handful includes Gundham's very own voice actor, Chris Tergliafera (easily one of the best VAs in the series, might I add), who just played through DR2 in December of 2019. He remembered voicing lines about being a culprit, but he legitimately didn't know which case it was going to be. When he got around to it and learned the context for all his lines, he was wiping away tears left and right.

I mean, Gundham's entire MO was to try and seem cool and evil, when he was nothing but good to everyone around him.
Also, completely forgot to add to this, but he was talking about going to hell for like a half hour toward the end of the trial, and then he went to animal heaven anyway, so this is in-canon confirmed.

Hajime and Chiaki seem to think that maybe hes sacrificing himself here so others could live. Uh, no, I dont think so. Otherwise he could've just told us he did it. Or made the murder plot not eighteen different types of convoluted and complicated. Dude probably didnt want to lose this trial. He did just give a whole speech about how living was awesome, after all. I admire his moxy though.
I mean, Gundham's entire MO was to try and seem cool and evil, when he was nothing but good to everyone around him. Also, his entire speech was about not giving up on life. If he didn't put effort into getting away with his murder, then what was this kill even for? The Nekomaru/Gundham battle was almost like a big prelude to this. He decided to pit himself against who he deemed his enemy, and whoever won the battle/trial would get to live, simple as that.

#41 - Rock Band 2 (360, 2008)

When the whole instrumental video game fad took the world by storm, I didnt see much promise in it. I was never big into music in general, or felt any desire to learn how to play guitar, or anything. But my friends got together when Guitar Hero 2 came out and decided they were all gonna pool some money together and get both the first games and two guitar controllers so we could try it out. My house was the place we always hung out at, so I was involved by proxy. It was easily one of the best decisions my friends have ever pushed me into making. I wasnt too into it at first; on Easy, its just a matter of finding one of three buttons and strumming at the right time. Then I bumped it up to Medium, and the dopamine really started to hit.

Guitar Hero 2 was definitely the clear better game of the first two. Harmonix had fine-tuned hammer-ons and pull-offs so they were far easier, which is necessary to play this game on Expert, and GH2 all-around provided a more accessible experience. In retrospect, it really should be on my list somewhere around the 80s, but ah well.

Then the news came out that Harmonix would no longer be involved with the series, and Neversoft would take the reins for Activision instead. Harmonix would then team up with rival company EA and create a new competitor in Rock Band. My friends planned on sticking with Guitar Hero, since it was an entity they already knew and loved, but I wasnt going to doubt Harmonix, and opted to splurge on all the equipment on day 1. By this time in our lives, we had graduated and were living separately, though several of my friends had an apartment together. I immediately brought everything over there so we could try it out.

It was an immediate hit. The guitar worked just as it had in the Guitar Hero games, so we knew wed still enjoy that, but the drums were a complete surprise for how fun they would be. And if everyone was drinking, the microphone was passed around for some great laughs. It was a staple of our daily lives for years, spanning the releases of both Rock Band 2 and 3. Except Rock Band 3 was a short-lived plaything for us. It was a fine addition to the series, but the keyboard was not a hot commodity in our friend group, and would typically get tossed to the side for the other 4 instruments. We were so over the fad by Rock Band 4 that it was never even brought up as a possibility to play among us, and the instrument gaming phase we went through officially died.

Rock Band 2 gets the sole nod on my list because they all provide basically the same experience. It had the best song list, the best aesthetics and visuals, and had Tour Mode, which was a fun way to change up the songs we were playing. Its also the time period when the DLC was getting super extensive and our list of songs available to us jumped up to the many hundreds. Rock Band has to be the single game Ive ever spent the most money on, and I dont regret a single bit of it.

#42 - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (360, my GotY for 2007)

Call of Duty dominated my life for the late 2000s/early 2010s. I honestly probably shouldve included Modern Warfare 2 on my list as well, considering the ungodly amount of time I put into its online multiplayer, but its certainly not a game I would even think of going back to these days. Call of Duty 4 does not have that distinction, because its single-player campaign is FPS perfection with legitimately surprising twists. This was the start of the CoD phenomenon, and for good reason. Hard to believe it all started more than 13 years ago.

Because there were two thrown flags in the entire game before that, and they were an offsides and a 12 men on defense penalty. They were calling nothing in the game prior to that call, and there were several missed defensive holding penalties, so it's not like there just weren't any flags being thrown because both sides were playing super clean football.

#43 - Shadow of the Colossus (PS2, 2005)

I tend to remember games based on their high points, rather than their low points. That swings heavily into Shadow of the Colossuss favor, because its low points sure are low. A good 80% of the game is spent wandering (hehe) around an expansive, completely empty world, with nothing but your horse to keep you company.

But when you finally reach a colossus, there are few other examples in gaming that can make your heart race quite like they do. The tussles with these beasts are less like fights and more like solving puzzles. He is 5000 times bigger than me, how am I supposed to kill this thing?! Luckily, the protagonist has possession of a holy sword that can locate and obliterate the colossis weak points. The primary issue is that you still have to get up there to it. They are typically on their head, and needless to say, they are well out of reach. You may have to lure them into an attack, or get them to lower their guard before you can get to a point where you can start climbing for it. Each colossus is dealt with in a different manner, and. ohhhh, Id say 15 of the 16 of them are truly satisfying to defeat.

Just having this gameplay loop of figuring out where a colossus is, getting over to it, and then taking it out would be enough to crack my list, because that final step is just so much fun. But Shadow of the Colossuss story is expertly told to boot. You play as a young man with nothing but a sword, a bow, and a horse, hoping to revive some other young woman. He finds an immaterial being that promises to revive her for him, if he can take out the 16 massive beings that walk this land. Very little else is ever told to you explicitly; like it is never explained who the humans are, who this being is, or any of the related details about any of them. Instead the game gives you context clues in between boss fights to give you a vague idea what is going on. It isnt until the very end that everything becomes clear, and what a glorious ending it is.

SotC isnt a game I would recommend to someone who needs constant interaction that demands their attention, but if you can look past that, youre not going to find a much more fulfilling gaming experience anywhere else.

#44 - SOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALs (PS2, 2003)

SOCOM dominated my high school years. Whereas a lot of these games Ive covered before, like Mario Party 2 and Timesplitters 2, were fun games that were played in certain situations to fill time, SOCOM II was a game that we would get out of school, run straight home, and boot up to play all evening. And this lasted for well over a year. In my Monster Hunter 3 write-up, I felt like that was probably the game Ive played the most of any game. Upon writing this paragraph, I realize that cant be true. SOCOM II has to hold that honor.

SOCOM was a third-person shooter series that was one of the first to fully embrace online as its main functionality. It was more tactical than a lot of the other shooters on the market. I believe team matches with SEALs vs terrorists were the only option; no solo deathmatch queues or anything. There were a few different game modes: deathmatch, prisoner rescue, demolition, fairly routine game modes. Each round was typically very quick. A few shots would kill you, and explosives were one-hit kills. When you died, you were out for the remainder of the round. Youd run forward to the midpoint of the map, everyone would toss some grenades at typical chokepoints, and then the stragglers afterward would run around until they found each other. The first team to completely die off would lose, or the first to complete all their objectives would win. If the timer ran out, whoever had more left alive would win. Every match was a best of 11; first to 6 wins took the match.

There were some really weird nuances to this, though. For instance, the prisoner rescuing teams goal was to bring three captured prisoners to the extraction zone. But two of them would be enough. If either team killed one of them, it would count as that prisoner being rescued if you were defending, or dying if you were rescuing. This led to some crazy fun standoffs where either team would start using the prisoners as meat shields, because even if the terrorists killed one, it would count them as being rescued. They also had health bars, so a common tactic as a terrorist was to go in and shoot the prisoners a few times so theyd have one hit left to death, and try to goad the SEALs into killing them. On top of that, the SEALs only needed to rescue two of them to win. But saving the second one wouldnt end the match; the third one would still be out there. If it was in the level, the SEALs would typically try to find them and kill them so they would win. A little bit too realistic of a game there, Zipper Interactive.

Anyway, we had three systems and three TVs hooked up in my room so we could all get on and play together in-person. We all joined clans and had clan wars. Youd hop into a lobby and find another clan looking for a team match with the same number of people you had online and play a best of 3 game against them, where each team would pick a map they were good at, and then the potential tiebreaker map would be one of the few true 50/50 maps to decide it.

I remember one time we had a 6v6 clan war. We were down 1-0 in the first match, going into round 2. Everyone ran forward and tossed grenades and a whopping 15 seconds after the round started, I brought up the scoreboard screen to see how it was going and my entire team was dead except me, and they had killed no one. I decided to just run around until I found someone so they could kill me and get it over with. But I came up behind someone, so I picked him off with my silenced weapon and turned and ran off somewhere else. This happened 5 more times, as I methodically picked off their entire team en route to a 6v1 comeback. My clanmates were screaming as their voices came back on as it ended, and we rode that momentum to a 6-1 rout of the match.

One of my friends was playing at home one day and was doing his own clan war. We had been part of that clan before and left, while he had stayed behind. We found their lobby, by complete chance. This being the case, we knew the password the clan used for its wars, and we noticed it was an uneven game, and that the clan leader wasnt in there. We thought fast and made a new account that looked just like his name but one letter off and hopped in there. They were all like oh thank god youre back, were barely holding on here. We then proceeded to teamkill everyone for two rounds before getting kicked out of the room. The next day at school, we went up to him and went I hear your clan leader had a rough clan war yesterday. He was so pissed at us that he didnt talk to us through the entire next week.

SOCOM is not a series that would survive today. It was pretty primitive and a product of its time. SOCOM 4 came out on PS3 and was absolutely terrible, and it hasnt seen the light of day since. But those PS2 days were some of my most cherished gaming moments of my entire life.

#45 - Ace Attorney Investigations 2: Prosecutor's Path (lol never localized)

Ace Attorney Investigations 1 is a mess of a story. The idea of playing as Edgeworth has a lot of potential, though, and making the entire story interconnect to create one big plotline was a solid idea. Functionally combining investigating with cross-examining witnesses makes the game flow a whole lot smoother and leaves a lot less down time. And Edgeworth is a really fun character to take control of. He can be a dick, but hes a lovable dick, and his inner monologues are really fun. The main issue was that the cases werent the least bit interesting or fulfilling, and thats ultimately what you are going to remember about Ace Attorney games.

Investigations 2 fixes all of this, and it does so immediately. Instead of taking down a loser prosecutor in Edgeworths own office, like in the first game, your first task in 2 is to check out a failed presidential assassination in what I consider easily the best first case in the series. Case 2 is a bit underwhelming and drags on a bit, but it sets up the stage for later, so it can be forgiven.

From then on is when the game really ramps up and never stops. Case 3 is nothing short of epic, and completely bucks the trend of Case 3s being the weak link of each game. You get a glimpse into Gregorys job as a defense attorney, and help figure out a case that went unsolved for decades. Case 4 forces Edgeworth to decide what being a prosecutor really means to him: should he fall in line with the status quo, rebel against the system and fight for what he believes in, or toe the line between the two and try not to rock the boat too much?

It all comes to a head in Case 5. I dont want to go too much into detail with anything, because its hard to discuss this case without spoiling anything, but I will say it had the most surprising twist in the entire series for me. Was it the best twist in the series? Not really, but it works, thematically, and fits the story.

Another reason Investigations 1 ultimately sucked was because of its new characters. Was there a single person other than Kay introduced that stuck with you after the game? Lang is alright, but as far as Ace Attorney antagonists go, I think he would only beat out Klavier. Detective Badd is pretty good, but criminally underutilized. Investigations 2 has several super-memorable characters brought into the series. The new witnesses are really fun. The new investigating partner is pretty cool. The new culprits are truly terrible people that are easy to hate. I would personally argue that the two new main antagonists are the deepest, most well-written villains in the series. Godot and Edgeworth himself are probably their only competition at the top, with Blackquill a somewhat distant fifth.

When it all gets added together, it becomes an easy upper-tier AA game. Its an absolute disgrace that the only way to experience this game is through unofficial means.

#46 - Paper Mario (N64, 2001)

This was the third RPG I ever played. The first was Pokemon Red, which is basically made to be babbys first RPG. The second was Quest 64. It will definitely not be making my list. But that kinda sets the stage for what my expectations for an RPG were. Thankfully, I was met with a delightful game just oozing with charm that was perfect for an RPG noob like me. The battle system is incredibly simple, but the badge and partner systems allow for just enough customization options and variety to still make every battle interesting. The story is also simple, but each chapter on its own is still creative and pleasant enough to keep the player engaged throughout. It all blends into a perfect RPG starting point for a growing boy like I was, that still has lasting power to be fun as an RPG veteran.

Screenshot was taken from a mod of the game called Book of Mario, that takes most of the game's dialogue and sends it through a bunch of Google translations, then back into English. There have been a few playthroughs of it on YouTube that are good for some chuckles, and I would recommend checking them out if you're bored.

#47 - Fire Emblem (GBA, 2003)

I had a weird first impression of this game. I honestly only got it because of Marth and Roy in SSBM. I brought it home and played through Lyns story in 2 days and fell in love with it. Then I started Ephraims story and everything went downhill. I never once looked online to see how Fire Emblem games work for the most part. So when they give me a super OP team member in Marcus, why would I ever think Im not supposed to use him?!

So yeah, about 20 chapters in, I was completely screwed. It was literally impossible for me to do enough damage to the boss in the level and my save game was softlocked. I was really disappointed, because I was so into the story, and Id have to restart Ephraims story from the very beginning if I wanted to see it to the end. I gave the game a little break, and then by chance over the next few months, I came across the word Jagen online, and then everything began to make sense.

I started over, put Marcus on the backlines, and stormed through the entire game in a week or two. Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade has a really gripping story with solid tactics gameplay, and if youve got those two things, you dont really need anything else to be a very good game.

#48 - Pokemon Black/White Version (DS, 2009)

Still the only time Pokemon ever decided to have an interesting plot. Other decisions made the game better also, like no previous gens making an appearance until the post-game, and having a fleshed-out post-game to begin with. I would assert that N is legitimately the most interesting character in all of Pokemon. Its nice to have more incentive to keep playing than I must be the champion because I have now turned 12, for once.

#49 - Batman: Arkham Asylum (360, 2009)

This game came out on my birthday. I dont know why that was the first thing that came to mind when starting this write-up, but there ya go.

I got into this game the exact way as Dark Souls did. It was a game coming from a genre I typically have no interest in (or in this case, the license; this is the first Batman-related anything I have enjoyed), and decided to rent it because of all the rave reviews it was getting. A ton of lore references flew way over my head, but it was still an absolute blast from beginning to end. I especially enjoyed the stealth sections where you sneak around and pick off guards around a room one by one. A few of the Scarecrow sections are some of my favorite moments in all of gaming. I think I have a single gripe about the entire game, and its the final boss. Bosses that have intermittent mob swarms are already bad. Final bosses that do it are even worse.

#51 - Borderlands 2 (360, 2012)

Borderlands 2 is really good. The story doesnt stand out, but it has one of the best villains in video games. The missions arent very engrossing. Nothing about the game jumps out as exceptional. except the gunplay. And the gunplay is very, very good. Well, at least pretty good. Theres just enough variety in the guns to keep you checking stats and effects and amassing the best weapon loadout you can find, and then going back and blowing shit up. Im honestly not convinced this game is anything all that special. Its only that fun because keeping good company with friends in a serviceable co-op game is that fun. But thats gotta still count for something, right? Its also very fun making everyone else wait while you play the slots for the 175th time, and thats the real reason its up this high.

#52 - Last Window: Secret of Cape West (DS, 2010)

So. you remember Kyle Hyde? Well, he gets fired from Red Crown for being a useless, downtrodden twit in the intro to this sequel, and now he has to go back home to his shitty little apartment in Manhattan. He hasnt been there in weeks, and finds out upon entering the building that everyones moving out, because the landlord is selling the building to be demolished in a matter of weeks. As he digs into his full mailbox to find the eviction notice, he stumbles across a strange letter, telling him to locate the Scarlet Star. He calls Ed, the manager of Red Crown, to see if this was a job sent directly to him that he just now found, and Ed clarifies that this isnt how the business operates, and that this has nothing to do with Red Crown. Perplexed, Kyle spends the duration of this game discovering the motive behind the landlords sudden decision to sell, what the Scarlet Star is, who wants him to locate it, and why?

Last Window, as a game, functions pretty much the exact same as Hotel Dusk. You wander around, talk to people, get information, do some snooping, and then interrogate people until they break and tell you their darkest secrets. I prefer Last Window to Hotel Dusk for several reasons. Its a bit more focused, and not quite as drawn out as its predecessor. Some of the characters involved arent quite as memorable, but a few of the more important ones stories are bigger standouts than Hotel Dusks cast. Along with the same art style as before (if it aint broke, dont fix it), it also has a killer soundtrack to boot. This track plays when youve broken someone down and are telling their sad life story:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcUsTxfMLoU

I should probably mention some place in here that this game never made it stateside. Cing went bankrupt before they could bring it over here. Fortunately, for us statesmen, Nintendo DS is not a region-locked console, and they did manage to release it in PAL. If you have ever considered importing it, but wasnt sure if it would work, or never even knew there was a Hotel Dusk sequel, I would super duper recommend getting it; its incredible.

#53 - Advance Wars: Dual Strike (DS, 2005)

When I was a wee 13 year old boy, living in rural Kansas, I got most of my gaming news from various gaming magazines I was subscribed to. There was this neat looking cartoony Nintendo war game for GBA that had just come out and got good reviews, and everything those reviews talked about screamed I MUST HAVE THIS GAME to me. I ran out to my parents in the other room after reading about it and screamed I MUST HAVE THIS GAME to them. My dad went out and bought it for me that day, and Ive been hooked on the series ever since.

Advance Wars is a series about a kid who commands an army and doesnt know what an airport is.

He then goes on to destroy entire armies to save the world. None of this is an exaggeration. Where Dual Strike in particular excels is in its single-player content. No other Advance Wars game incentivizes playing by yourself quite as much as DS does. It has literally every single Battle Map from the previous game, plus more of its own, and has more flexibility in its CO swapping mechanic. OK, so maybe a few of the combinations of COs are slightly completely and totally broken, but who needs balance anyway when your game is this god damn fun?

#54 - Dark Souls III (2016)

Dark Souls 1 is awesome. Its on my list. Dark Souls 2 felt bad for me to play, but it was almost like a rubber band for the series. It stretched backwards, just so it could shoot forward in quality by a substantial amount for the next game.

Lets talk a bit more about Dark Souls 1 first. The groundwork for an incredible game was laid, but there are some really bad design decisions along the way that hinder the experience here and there. A lot of close-quarter hallways ruin your day if youre using a big weapon. The Capra Demon sucks. Pinwheel is a total pushover. The Bed of Chaos is an abomination of a boss. Honestly, the bosses that arent Sif, O&S, Priscilla, and the Four Kings are really unmemorable. A lot of areas just arent interesting. More of them are an absolute pain to traverse. These all sound like the makings of a bad game, but its so solid underneath that its still an incredible game.

Now lets discuss Dark Souls 3. It basically fixes all of these problems. The bosses are way cooler and even more varied. The Abyss Watchers in particular are one of the coolest fucking bosses in any video game ever made. Areas are way more open and fun to play through (most of them anyway, fuck the Consumed Kings Garden). Theyre also way more pleasing to the eyes. Take any screencap of Dark Souls 1 and youre gonna get a dull, depressing landscape no matter where you are. Take a screencap of Dark Souls 3, and you might get this.

Or this.

Or this.

This last one is the god damn tutorial area, and its gorgeous. Nothing in Dark Souls 1 ever compares to this. Yeah, I mean, a lot of the areas are still pretty dreary, but theres still much more variety in DS3.

And the game feels really good again. I honestly cant explain why Dark Souls 2 feels so bad, but something is just. off, and I cant explain why. But Dark Souls 3 is back to having exquisite combat, some of the best in any game ever. And thats really all you need to know to get why its such a great game. The only reason its only nominally above the first Dark Souls is because that game really opened Pandoras Box for me in luring me into the Soulsborne genre.

When I say place it at the 5, that still leaves a bit of room for exploitation, so to be more clear, either the 5 yard line or where the ball was fumbled, whichever is further from the endzone.

#55 - Hotel Dusk: Room 215 (DS, 2007)

Hotel Dusk is the fuckin (55th) best. It checks off so many boxes for what made DS games in particular great.

Fun uses of the touchscreen - check
Neat and unique art style - check
Engrossing story and characters - check

Hotel Dusk puts you in control of Kyle Hyde, a bitter, down-on-his-luck door-to-door salesman for a company called Red Crown in the late 1970s. He used to be a cop in Manhattan chasing down a massive criminal syndicate called Nile, until his partner, Bradley, went rogue and he was forced to chase him down, corner him, and shoot him. Bradley then falls into the river and is never seen again. This memory eats at Kyle and he has obsessed over Bradleys motives ever since. However, Red Crown isnt a normal sales company. Its run by Ed Vincent, a former LAPD officer who used to be buds with Kyles now-deceased father, who uses the company as a front to find things that dont want to be found. Kyle is Eds lackey for digging up all this dirt for his friends back on the force.

As part of this job, Ed gets a tip that theres something to be found in this rundown place called Hotel Dusk. Kyle is to report there for the night and receive a package with further instructions. While there, he runs into about a dozen characters also staying the night there, for various reasons. Over the course of the game, as you start digging deeper and deeper into the secrets of the hotel, you figure out that, by chance, almost everyone there has some kind of connection to Nile, Bradley, or his past in some way or another. Its up to Kyle to piece it all together and come to terms with what happened between him and Bradley all those years ago.

Kyle Hyde is legitimately one of my favorite protagonists of any kind of media ever. Because of his bitterness, and his tendencies as a cop, he tends to be very blunt and stick his nose into everyone elses business. Hes smarmy, crass, and yet has just about the most adorable smiling face ever.

However, deep down, he truly does enjoy helping people, and he finds ways to do just that to everyone he meets in this hotel. Figuring out what happened to Bradley, why he decided to betray Kyle, and how everyone in this game is connected to all these events leads to one of the most engrossing stories in gaming.

#56 - Mario Golf (N64, 1999)

(best girl Maple pictured)

Mario Golf was the first time Id ever played a 3D golf video game. I imagine that is the case for a lot of people, if they were a Nintendo kid like me. And it was a hell of a way to start.

Nintendos ventures into sports-based video games starring their #1 mascot in the late 90s were very different from what they are now. These days, any time Mario is shoved into a sports or event-based game, it results in an ultra-arcady version of that sport/event, filled with power-ups, booby traps, and gimmicks. But not in the 90s. For some reason, they just decided to slap together some fairly realistic sports sims that just happen to use Nintendo characters to help sell copies.

And that was honestly perfect. As I alluded to in my Hot Shots Golf write-ups, I tend to prefer more realistic golf sims with a neat cartoony aesthetic. Thats exactly what Mario Golf provided. There are no items, no zany courses (OK well, one zany course), no ridiculous shots to pull off. Its just good ol golf at its finest. You aim at the hole and keep whackin until it goes in.

Just as a sidenote, believe it or not, Nintendo ran some online tournaments for this game. On the main menu, there was a secret button input you could do to bring up a code entry screen. On their official website and through Nintendo Power, there were codes you could type into this screen only once, and you could play a single round to try and get a high score. I remember playing one of the tournaments on the sandy dune course and got a -16, which was tied for the best score Id ever gotten in that course. It gave me a return code to input on the website and it was good for top 50 for that tournament. Id never felt more accomplished in my life so far than at the moment those results came back.

#57 - Return of the Obra Dinn (PC, 2018)

The concept behind this game is maybe the most mundane videogame plot in history. You are a representative for an insurance company tasked with finding out how to handle paying out the proceeds for an abandoned ship that has been discovered just off the coast of England. But Return of the Obra Dinn is anything but mundane.

The objective of the game is to figure out the ultimate fate of each of the ships 60 crewmates and passengers. Some made it out alive.. but most died a horrible, horrible death. In order to accomplish this, you are given a magic stopwatch that can take you back to the moment of a persons death. When you use it, you are taken to a black screen, where you listen to the final 20-60 seconds of their life unfold. At the very moment of truth, it will show you a single freeze-frame shot of that person dying, and his surroundings. You can then wander around these still shots and try to find clues that you can use to put names to faces, and causes of death to people. The game really doesnt insult your intelligence, either. The game might show you someone dying, but you dont know their name, and a lot of times, their killers name. You will have to use context clues to figure it out, and in most cases, it forces you to utilize multiple scenes to do it.

This is where the visual aesthetic Lucas Pope used in the game comes in strong. I dont think any other game could use a monochromatic graphical style even close to the extent as Obra Dinn. Because he only had to render a single frame of animation, he could really emphasize the key moments. And since these moments are of people dying, they typically showcase some badass shit going on. Heres some examples of scenes you can see in the game:

These arent even my favorite scenes. There are several that are even cooler, but I dont want to showcase those, for spoiler reasons. Its sort of like Doki Doki Literature Club, in that you go into the game expecting one thing, and then at a very distinct moment, it takes those expectations and breaks them over its knee. The story is shown backwards, for the most part, and the first chapter you see is the final one chronologically. You see the fate of the last 4 people alive on the ship. Immediately after that, you go back a chapter and are immediately confronted with something that defies all expectations, and thats when the game truly opens up and becomes a lot of fun.

#58 - Mario Kart 8 (Wii U, 2014)

Mario Kart is one of the most consistent series in videogame history. I played all of them as they came out, and only one of them has failed to dominate my free time over the following few weeks, and that wasnt the games fault. It was because The World Ends With You came out at basically the same time as Mario Kart Wii.

But it was Mario Kart 8 that elevated it all to the next level, and its mostly due to the addition of gravity-defying sideways and upside-down segments. This leads to some of the best-designed racing courses ever made. And they all look fantastic to boot. To this day, Mario Kart 8 is still one of the most pleasing games to look at. AND it feels great to play! Some of the items are really good, but none of them are completely overbearing, and it almost never leads to an overly frustrating finish, like Mario Kart Wii was famous for. If you are the best Mario Kart player in a group, you are going to win most of the time. But not ALL of the time, which is the perfect balance between skill and luck for a Mario Kart game.

It also had maybe the best online of any Nintendo game. By which I mean to say it was actually mostly worked. Thats more than I can say about 95% of their other attempts to provide online functionality! And that was enough for me to play with Board 8 a lot! And realize I wasnt the hot shit I thought I was! Fuck you Ermine. Fuck you Grand Kirby.

#59 - Hot Shots Golf Fore! (PS2, 2004)

Hey, remember Jak and Daxter? Cuz Sony doesnt.

Anyway, as I said in my Out of Bounds write-up, I didnt get introduced to the series until HSG3, but right then and there, I was immediately hooked. However, I never actually got 3 myself; I just played it at a friends house. I made sure to pick up the next game when it came out, and it was an absolute masterpiece of arcade golf. It had an extensive single-player, introduced online play, and had a ridiculous TWELVE courses to play, all with mirrored and harder tee options. In comparison, Out of Bounds shipped with only 6 courses available from the get-go, and that was the next generation title. It also brought in Ratchet and Jak as playable golfers, along with Clank and Daxter as caddie options.

Beyond everything Ive said before, I cant state enough just how good Hot Shots Golf games feel to play. They appear very cartoony and play up the caricatures of their characters, but the golf itself is actually more realistic than the Tiger Woods games at the time, which labeled themselves as more of a golf sim kind of game. Not saying that they werent fun, but Hot Shots has always filled a major gap in what would otherwise be basically an empty void for golf games I truly love.

#60 - Dark Souls (360, 2011)

Back when I was still mainly just following what the internet thought were fun games, out came this notoriously difficult medieval fantasy game that looked pretty rad. I wasnt sure it was going to be my kind of thing, because I typically dont enjoy bashing my head against a wall trying to progress in a game, so I decided Id just rent it instead. I then spent my first 8 hours getting from the tutorial area to Firelink, to the Undead Burg fireplace to the ladder shortcut above Undead Burg. Eight hours. I was not having fun. I came very close to giving up and taking the game back.

But something told me to try again. Maybe something about my build sucks, or Id prefer a different weapon. I started over and chose a Pyromancer instead. 45 minutes later, I was right back where I was after 8 hours my first time through. All of a sudden, I realized that I was getting it. It wasnt that I suddenly had better gear or something. I was getting better. I rode this momentum through the entire game in a week, and the Dark Souls series had a huge new fan.

#61 - Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow Version (GB, 1998)

Pokemons first generation is an absolute mess of a game. Moves dont work properly. Sleep is completely broken. Fast Pokemon can kill with moves like Wrap from 100%. Psychic demolishes everything. Nothing is balanced whatsoever.

But fuck if it isnt just one of the most ambitious titles Nintendo has ever put out. It sparked a global phenomenon. The entire world was absolutely enthralled with these monsters, myself included. I got all three of Red, Blue, and Yellow. I got Stadium. I got Snap. I got the GBC Trading Card Game (which barely missed out on my list btw). I got my friends into the actual trading card game. I dont think Ive ever been more hooked on a game in my entire life. So yeah, the three games are actually kinda poopy, but it has left its (skid)mark on my life, for sure.

#62 - Tetris Effect (PC, 2018)

Tetris Effect is not so much a game, but an experience. You are still moving tetrominoes down a grid and clearing lines, but thats not what you will be focusing on when playing. There are about 30 levels to play through, as you take in the visuals surrounding the grid. Tetris Effect will take you through the sea, onto the moon, and through the sky in a hot air balloon. While it does this, it will play some chill music and flash pretty colors and particles in your face. When you move the pieces, little sound bytes will play that sync up with the music. In some of the other levels, the music will ramp up in volume and really test your Tetris capabilities by turning up the speed on you to a crazy level.

At the end, it culminates in an absolutely gorgeous display that uses several of the levels visuals, while the most beautiful song plays in the background. If you have a means to play the game in VR, it really enhances all the aspects of the game to an even more absurd degree.

Im not ashamed to say that this game has made me cry. Several times, in fact. A somewhat large handful of games have accomplished that feat, but most, if not all of the others to do so have done it through a sad story, or a particularly overwhelming moment. Tetris Effect is the only one to do so only through emotional sensory overload. Theres no story or driving force behind making this game stick in my mind, but it is still a game I will likely never forget.

#63 - Chrono Trigger (SNES, my GotY for 1995)

I would hesitate to call this game revolutionary, but it was still very innovative in multiple areas. The battle system is awesome. The time travel mechanics are really fun. Reducing the plot to a story about saving the world from an alien parasite would be doing a disservice to the incredible moments throughout the game. The characters are well-written (though Frogs dialogue is hard to read) and have great designs.

Ayla > Magus > Crono > Robo > Frog > Marle > Lucca btw

Anyway, its simply an RPG where literally everything is done really well. I just never played this back in the day. I didnt play this until it got ported to the DS, and I have to say, it still holds up today. One of the objectively best games Ive ever played. I just dont have the crazy nostalgia for it that others have. Like Nick. I think Ive heard he kinda likes this game.

WTF Wigs, the only thing Fire Emblem and Into the Breach have in common is that it's turn-based on a grid. Pretty much every single other aspect of both games are completely different.

Paper Jam honestly isn't that bad, but it did troll everyone by having this as the battle music for the first hour of the game, and then never to be heard again, and that alone is unforgiveable.

#64 - Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (DS, 2009)

I CHANGED MY MIND AND WENT WITH THE VORE ANYWAY MWAHAHAHAHA

*ahem*

Just before the series was irreversibly ruined forever, Nintendo put out one final worthwhile Mario & Luigi game. They followed up the hit GBA game Superstar Saga with a DS game that just kinda expanded on the idea and brought nothing new to the table. Theres nothing blasphemous about it; I still love Partners in Time. Its just the bastard child of the original M&L trilogy. AlphaDream needed to come up with something a little different for its next installment, and they came up with what I consider the best idea theyve ever had.

They gave Bowser a starring role in an official Nintendo game. That alone doesnt make a good game, but luckily they supplemented his role with his own fun fighting scheme and some AMAZING dialogue. No other Mario game has made me laugh as much as BIS has. And honestly, thats the main selling point of this game for me. I was more than just thoroughly entertained the entire game through, and thats all I can ask for in a game.
