I would assume your goal from "tax the rich more" would be to generate more tax revenue and not to just symbolically stick it to the ultra wealthy. History shows us it doesn't work

Basically, I think they took things that could make you ill and interpreted them as being sins against God. Shellfish were bad to eat because they swam in their own feces. (Hence, we learned to boil them.) Cheating on your wife or having sex with men can get you in trouble because of STDs.

I don't think God Himself cares if you have sex with someone of the same gender -- especially since you don't get to choose your orientation.

This has been my understanding as well. More like guidelines to keep people healthy back then.
