realnifty1 11/27/20 2:54:14 PM #17 | metallica846 posted... Meh. Thats a freedom of religion thing. It was, but the court typically doesn't issue rulings on moot cases (the restrictions had already been lifted) and the logic behind the decision was absolutely befuddling comparing a place of worship to a liquor store while completely hand-waving the idea of transient traffic versus confined communal space. It was an activist ruling that conservatives supposedly hate from the judiciary and the paper thin logic does not bode well for the next 20 years or so while they wield this authority. |

realnifty1 11/27/20 2:46:05 PM #15 | They didn't even make a case, it is all just pretense to get something in front of the Supreme Court. Clearly they think having packed the court will prove enough, I really hope not, but that 5-4 decision against NY on churches makes me worried. |

Topic | Marvel comics seem to suck... is DC any better? |
realnifty1 11/21/20 11:15:01 PM #29 | If you want something closer to the MCU you should look to the younger heroes, the MCU is mostly based on how those characters were 40 years or more ago. Look into Ms Marvel, Miles Morales: Spider-Man, Champions, and Strange Academy. If you have Marvel Unlimited it might be worth reading through Donny Cates Marvel work in order, it's very popcorn, greatest hits type stuff but makes for a fun read mostly. Real talk, stop reading Marvel and DC and start reading Boom Studios, Seven Secrets is shaping up nicely, We Only Find Them When They're Dead is cool so far, and Something is Killing the Children has been the scene hotness for like a year now. |

realnifty1 11/17/20 10:43:03 PM #20 | Eh, it actually will likely negatively affect people struggling with high medical bills. Particularly since no one here as thought about it yet, not using your insurance means that it doesn't count towards your deductible. So if you are counting on those maintenance prescriptions to eat up most of that, then you are still going to end up paying all that money back in through your visits. This also doesn't hurt the insurance company in any way, the make money from you paying a premium and then not having to pay as much out. If you sidestep them then they are getting more money. |

realnifty1 11/09/20 11:58:11 AM #22 | Anyone thinking the Republicans are done is insane or lying on purpose(Graham). We just went through an objectively terrible four years, and while not all of it may have been Trump's fault directly he did nothing to heal or reconcile anything., Divisions within ourselves have deepened and or reputation abroad has plummeted. Even still, he nearly won again. If the Democrats can't figure out Congress and get some forward progress for people to get behind look for Biden to be out in 4 years. |

realnifty1 11/06/20 12:36:32 PM #26 | I mean, we never really know the result until January 6th when Congress counts the Electoral College votes. It's just not close enough that any of this typically comes into play. Most States have until December 8th to decide and assign their electors, resolving any recounts or court issues up until that date. |
Topic | Was Trump really "good for the economy" before the pandemic? |
realnifty1 11/03/20 1:57:13 PM #64 | Trump was only truly successful at buoying the Stock Market as the idea of deregulation is like chum in the water for those sharks. Here are meaningful charts(GDP, Wages, and Jobs), you can see he didn't light the world on fire.Worth noting that bad news tends to be a little lagging on these as the government can do things to prop them up for a time before they crash, but it is much rarer for these to be artificially increased. https://www.statista.com/statistics/188165/annual-gdp-growth-of-the-united-states-since-1990/ https://www.epi.org/publication/swa-wages-2019/ https://seidmaninstitute.com/job-growth/year/ |
Topic | i have a couple simple questions about cell phone security |
realnifty1 11/03/20 11:50:38 AM #6 | So worst case scenario, they can man in the middle you. Either host a fake wifi that you are connecting to or placing a machine between the wifi and the internet. This service would then accept all your incoming requests, inspect them and then forward them on to where you were sending them. Everything https is end to end encrypted, meaning they would not be able to see the content of your request or the content of the response. The would still be able to see where you are sending requests too and the size of requests and responses. If it is not https or otherwise encrypted they would be able to see everything about your requests and responses. All of this is very unlikely and needs a fair bit of technical know how, at least I've never seen a script kiddie toolbox for this anyway. |

They might have some difficulty in court over it depending on the judge (movies and music have value specifically derived through audio visual consumption, but most would argue a a games primary value is through the interaction) |

realnifty1 10/22/20 3:11:09 PM #20 | The Republicans already engaged in court packing. By refusing to hold hearings for Merrick Garland they effectively set the court to 8 jurists. When the field was to their advantage again they packed the court with a 9th jurist. As much as I hate the political hardball, Republicans have shown they are willing to do anything to hold on to their last remnants of control and power. I am OK with doing anything to reset the playing field. |

Topic | Bella Thorne scams her donators on OF, ruins it for other sex workers |
realnifty1 08/28/20 10:46:47 AM #77 | When you buy something electronically the business pays a processing fee to the banks, which is a percent of the amount charged. When a charge-back is made you don't get the original processing fee back and there is often another fee for the charge-back as well. So the site is likely out thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars over this. If Bella broke the terms of service they could potentially dock her earnings to recoup losses, but either she may have not promised something she did not deliver or maybe they don't want to sour the relationship as she is still bringing in lots of new revenue and exposure. So in the end, they cap the max amounts to help limit their exposure in these types of events and it really only affects a handful of girls with the caps as most are rarely if ever seeing more than a $100 singular tip.More damaging would be the longer turn around time to get paid, but I know most cam/video sites were a month plus, so this could just be placing them more in line with the market. |

So you don't believe that him threatening them with a firearm led to the confrontation? They just randomly decided to go after a guy with a gun and not because they were in fear for their lives, clearly they needed to be? Shit, I got some beachfront property in Kansas at a sweet price if you think that. |
Topic | Literally video footage of the rioters attacking the teen |
realnifty1 08/27/20 2:42:20 PM #222 | In most states, but don't want to go look up for WI, you are unable to claim self defense if you committed an illegal action leading to the incident in which you are trying to claim self defense. Brandishing an illegal firearm seems like in most states it would prevent him from claiming self defense. |
Topic | Why is NY, NJ, and Massachusetts deaths so high compared to their total cases? |
realnifty1 08/24/20 1:59:42 PM #17 | I don't think any of the responses have touched on the real reasons. Surviving any illness usually comes down to three things, early detection, early treatment, and correct treatment. In the early days when this was ripping through the states you mentioned, it was because of their status as a major port and high population density. Because we took so long to start taking this seriously all three states already had significant outbreaks before we started taking it seriously. (Remember we only started caring once significant numbers started dying, but this thing has a 7-10 incubation and can take up to a month to kill, so it had a big headstart growing before there was a public reaction) Initially, we had basically no testing, we only knew people were ill once they were far enough along to need hospitalization basically, so we have basically lost early detection and early treatment already. So now to save lives it takes correct treatment, but in the early days there was no idea what did and didn't work. And even when something did was it anecdotal or broadly effective, you never knew. And even if you have some treatment you believe to be effective how do you communicate that out fast enough to save lives across the system. That is the reason the deaths per case for NY, NJ, and MA are so high. Until sometime in April a severe Covid reaction was essentially a death sentence and people either didn't know they had it or seek help until it was too late and even once they did the doctors had no effective gameplan against it. Now we have learnings and experience, we know what is and isn't effective, so we should not see any other state get to that high of a number unless they are just actively trying to kill people. |

Topic | Sweden's economy "the least harmed in Europe". |
realnifty1 07/21/20 7:53:00 PM #14 | Sweden has 559 deaths per million, seventh worst in the world with European countries UK(669 dpm), Spain(608 dpm), and Italy(580 dpm) are worse (Spain and Italy were already over the edge before the world really started reacting though). For reference population density in Europe for that group UK(9th), Italy(14th), Spain(6th), and Sweden (44th). Similar European countries for density would be Finland, Norway, and Belarus who have deaths per million ~50. So you know, just 10 times as many deaths to save ~2% of GDP. If you want to go see a successful country, go study what Germany did, they have a ridiculously low 110 deaths per million despite being the 11th most dense European country. |

realnifty1 07/20/20 6:48:06 PM #108 | philsov posted... Redlining was done along racial lines. Low income whites got home loans while middle class blacks did not. Absolutely, as I said, the outcomes we have today are indeed born of racist policy that strove for the outcome we have today. I do think it is important to understand where all this came from, but I think we do ourselves ill good to attribute the secondary effects to the racist origins. Making allowances for lateness do to race isn't going to solve racism or the reasons why they are being late. For progress we need to address the actual problem and and not just what lead us on this path. Trying to figure out how to stop a meteor from causing an ice age isn't going to bring the dinosaurs back and fixing racism isn't going to solve the actual current issue that is economic disparity. |
